My Flatron is not what it used to be. The brightness took its toll, at 100% for more than a decade. Now it's just too dark, and everything but photos look blurry. Probably never going to find any decent CRT again.

Sounds about right, unfortunately. It's a real shame though, it would appear that Flatron series is prone to these problems after certain period of time.

Quite late but got 98SE set up driver-wise.

Now come the upgrades. I got 512MB across 4x128MB sticks, and am in the process of getting enhancements on this install in my own way.

The Deskstar is still running as healthy as ever!

Degrading is the worst what it comes to CRTs. And AFAIK, you can't fix that (at least not easily)?

True. No one is making CRT's anymore. Maybe a company will make a modern replacement LCD that can emulate a CRT?
I wonder that is technology today advanced enough to do that? I'd like a solution like that for older consoles as getting an used CRT TV is always a gamble.

Yeppers, have a handful of them in a quad processor server system.
Still not as fast as SSD's.

I don't have the 15K but the 10K version of the Cheetah in a dual P3 system. They're on par with Raptors in terms of speeds - at least mine.

For a rather spartan 370-based BX board (DTK PRM-27i E0), that's a nice thing to see. 133FSB with PCI in spec!

I also found its VIA 693A counterpart, the PRM-27IV E0. IIRC that one runs the BIOS from a Shuttle AV11 though.

You can likely edge a 136mhz FSB with no ill effects. Also, if you have more than 256MB of RAM in that system(highly recommend 768MB or 1GB if you're going to run Win9X, more if you're going to run XP), set your AGP Aperture to 128MB or 256MB to get better/more stable performance from you GFX card.

The highest it'll go is 150/37, from what I've checked in the settings.

Oh wow. I wouldn't go that high personally. 137 or 138 is the most I'd push. The reason is that the drive controllers also depend on that clock and data integrity will start being a problem beyond a certain point.

IIRC taking the PCI bus 12% over spec is generally considered safe. The 150/37 option just happens to be 12% increase over 133/33.
Years ago I had a Piii Celeron running F@H (CPU only) with a 12% overclock, with 112/37 settings, and never had an issue with it.

Yeah, I'll agree with Lex here though. Someone told me that Deskstars of that period (the GXP series specifically) didn't really like OC'd PCI bus. Even if the one I use (34GXP) uses metal platters (and I think the 60GXP I have off an Netvista 6578 does as well.)

I agree with your point and I guess there is always an * with anything. Let's say a 12% PCI overclock is generally fine provided you are not using a DeathStar hard drive. :)

IMHO, no LCD panel ever will be able to truly emulate CRT ... and that's the real problem here. Sure, they can make it look more or less similar in terms of colors & contrast, but the flicker & refresh rate will always appear different on LCD no matter what.

That is why I reverted back from LCD screen on a retro-gaming system & went back to CRT. Especially at lower resolutions (640x480, 800x600 ... when using Voodoo or V2) most CRTs will give LCD a run for its money. The only "catch" is that you need to find a CRT reliable enough to work for years & years, without losing or compromising on brightness & sharpness.

Wouldn't really call those two Deathstars... given they outlived a good heap of early 00s Caviars!

Again, it seems the 13GB one (DPTA-371360, aka 34GXP) is definitely a metal platter drive.
Not sure if the 60GXP is, as I couldn't find anything about it - only about its newer sibling, the dreaded 75GXP.

Benchmark Scores bench...mark? i do leave mark on bench sometime, to remember which one is the most comfortable. :o
Hey guys. I recently found a socket 7 computer and it seems that the Pentium MMX is the fastest CPU Intel made for this socket. I was expecting to see exorbitant prices on eBay because that’s a running theme for other parts that were top-of-the-line at some point. To my surprise, the Pentium MMX CPUs are quite cheap compared to the fastest Pentium IIs and IIIs. Do any of you know why these are cheap in comparison to their successors?
nah, Pentium MMX isn't...

K6 III (K6 3D+ Sharptooth) and K6 III-P (mobile) were the fastest socket super 7 but some socket 7 mobo were compatible with the III-P iirc and maybe the III (3D+), basically did beat the Pentium II (and challenged the Pentium III which was, in the end, just a rebadged Pentium II with SSE)
i jumped from a K6 2 to an Athlon .... but AMD was quite the "almost" top dog during the K6 2 K6 III and Athlon era :D (erata: actually Athlon Era AMD was the top dog, a bit like initial Ryzen era, subsequent Ryzen were and are still bloody impressive, to the point that it is, again, a duopoly instead of a monopoly, unlikle the core 2 duo era )

Nice Hakos Baelz wallpaper :D
Thanks, I have a lot more :D

Pictured in order:

Fauna: Soyo 6BA+IV w/ P3 550 Katmai, GF2 Pro 64MB
Korone: Luckytech P6BX2 w/ P3 500 Katmai, TNT2 M64 32MB
Nerissa: ABIT BP6, 2x Celeron 333, GF4 Ti4200 128MB

And the most recent one besides Korone is Laplus, from a DTK PRM-27i E0 w/ P3 800EB ( post #18,278). I'm probably nuts for using a Deskstar 34GXP as main drive but hey, as long as it's known to use metal platters I'm fine with it.

More to come, I have a few boards to come back to - ABIT BE6-II (now that I have an slotket that can run Coppermines natively), ECS K7S5A, PCChips M810 (two of 'em!), QDI Legend V and a slightly out-of-my-comfort-zone 9x build with... a DFI nF4 Infinity and an Athlon 64 3000+ - I have a set of modified 82.69 drivers that I wanna test out if they can run a Geforce 8 card, given they appear listed in the INF.

Oh... and I didn't count the 6-7 or so PS3s I like to tinker with every now and then. (mostly phats and a single slim)
