Well, okay. These are home processors that are used in an uncharacteristic way. The colleague before me is right. The studio saved a few dollars instead of buying a Xeon, now this "savings" is eating at its head.

They are not cheaper than equivalent Xeons, that's the funny part. But even though they are client segment CPUs, they are perfectly capable of being used as light-server or workstation parts, if ECC support or enterprise-grade device security is not required. Their high ST performance is actually an attractive to game servers, since most server systems use snapshot technology to work.

Why don't the 12 series CPU's seem to have this problem? Is it something specific to the 13/14th votages

It's because of this:

They aren't pushed nearly as hard. Even the 12900KS is very sensible compared to the 13900k/14900k keep in mind a lot of boards remove power limits when setting XMP.

It's also not the whole 13/14th gen lineup almost all the cpus so far have been i9s which intel had to push really hard.

Even the 12900KS has mild clocks compared to the 13th Gen i9's, and the "14th Gen" ones are just mental, they are operating at their very limit. IMHO, the i9-13900KS is as far as Raptor Lake goes within the realm of reason. Thinking about it, mirroring the i9-12900KS clocks with my 13900KS on air might be an efficient way to keep my processor performant and operating much easier on air. I might have to give it a try.

Quite possible! I've always used a very low SA voltage with my KS. 1 volt flat, never above this. Even 1.05 made my RAM unstable with the Ace. Can't wait for the Apex Encore and see what gives.
While mines only one sample I need 1.15V for up to 8000, 1.275v for 8200 and 1.35 for 8400.

In comparison I needed 1.3V for 7600 with the Z790 ACE

13th/14th are pushed harder they also allow higher memory frequency much higher with 14th gen.

12900k was competing with the then much older 5000 series AMD stuff the 13th generation was competing with the 7000 series which intel wanted to beat in benchmarks which is obvious by them allowing no power limits. They since made updates to how bios handles them but for some the damage is likely already done. Some cpus might not like the more conservative bios settings out of the box who knows.

But honestly it's all just a guess. I also think while an issue it's being blown out of proportion probably rightfully so at the very least I hope that it's the case. We don't need one or the cpu makers having prospective buyers worrying about their cpus being unstable out of the box.

If I'm not mistaken, W680 supports ECC on the 'consumer' CPUs.

IMHO trust is a big thing. If a machine does not do its work reliably, it is not a machine worth having. Downtime and troubleshooting are costly and frustrating. That's the same reason why I spend days upon days validating my tweaks and over/underclocks before I deem the machine "production ready". If a processor cannot be trusted even in "fail safe settings" in conjunction with a enterprise-grade chipset such as the W680... then it's simply a bad and undesirable product, I'm afraid.

I'm hoping Intel takes the issue more seriously.

Yeah I think it's a limitation of the Z SKU, actually. I just read the feature chart, the W680 supports both overclocking and ECC, the Q670 removes overclocking support. In hindsight, why are high-end motherboards even using Z690 instead of W680 then? Odd.

ARK states 13900K is compatible with ECC when used in conjunction with W680 chipset.

Same, us as consumer we are better off when all companies are competitive and doing well.

Anyone rooting for a companie to have issues like this just becuase it makes whatever brand/company they don't like look bad is short sighted all these companies need to do better we all win if that's the case.

Not saying anyone is doing that in this thread but I've seen stupid comments like that's what people get for buying Intel etc.

Same, when I say a companies needs to do better or I'm disappointed in a particular product they make it has 0 bearing on how I feel about the company as a whole I honestly don't really care about who makes what only about who makes a product I want to buy.

It's ok for someone to have preferences don't get me wrong but when it's to the point that you have to belittle others who make different hardware choices that's taking your fanboyism way too far. I also roll my eyes when people claim their hardware does things it doesn't though lol but that's just reality.

Bottom line if this really is as bad as it seems intel just needs to man up and fix the problem and take care of it's customers, companies are remembered more for how they react when things go wrong more than how they act when things are going right in my book at least.

Alderon Games is some game developer for a game I don't play. But they came out with this post that has been going around various hardware circles on the internet: Intel is selling defective CPUs - Alderon Games

Anyone else hear more about this potential story? Two full generations of CPUs leading to stability issues? It looks quite devilish, it sounds like the CPUs ship out of Intel just fine but after months of use begin to have crashing / instability.
have seen hype-video on YT from some comical "PC blogger" (russian), that these cpu are massively get broken. I suppose bad users, I don't believe in it. Have seen a lot of 13 gen cpus working good.

13900k/14900k can infact ecc (change from earlier gens where only i3s could) w/ the proper board (W680, maybe C262/C266? idk, what sparse information out there is conflicting, i know previously you could pop in a 6100 into a C232 and do ecc, but yea)

Its a combination of selling chips that are running on the bleeding edge of their voltage curve, and motherboard manufacturers having aggressive boost profiles... that was encouraged by Intel, and recently Intel threw the board makers under the bus as chips were degrading, faulting and failing when supplied the aggressive voltage and boost frequency that Intel documents suggested were OK to use
Did you miss the part about servers? There's more to it than voltage and clocks, I suspect.

Anyone remember 6-series problem? It was predicted there would be circuit degradation and SATA failure sometime in the future so Intel allowed all those boards to be replaced which would have cost a pretty penny.
Why don't the 12 series CPU's seem to have this problem? Is it something specific to the 13/14th votages
Coincidental or not that Pat Gelsinger became CEO after 12-series? Were things done too quickly?

Do you think Intel were pissed that these server farms were not using expensive Xeons so rigged the high end 13/14k CPUS to fail under server workloads?

There are no Xeon equivalents to the i9s, as far as single core max speed is concerned.

Well, the E-2488 has 5.6 GHz P-cores. This is the nominal turbo target of the 13900K, sans TVB.

Well, there you have it. Neither the CPUs, nor the chipset are intended for this use. Workstations - sure. Using them for hosting dedicated servers for an MMO of all things is just stupid. Don’t get me wrong, I have issues with how far Intel pushed the i9 models these past couple generations, it absolutely can potentially lead to instability if used improperly, but this is very much a case of user error too.

Except that these types of gaming servers are not 'improper', and in fact are what quite a few cloud gaming and game server infrastructure providers sell. Like this little known company NVIDIA that sold and still sells Core i9 cloud gaming servers.

Simple google search can show you first-party solution providers utilizing these consumer parts. This is not a new concept and Intel actively supports these providers.

Indeed. Semiconductor fabrication is not an easy science. There's a reason most companies, including Apple, AMD and NVIDIA, are fabless. Intel is more of an exception than a norm, and even they seem to need to rely on TSMC's extremely advanced technology from time to time.

looks like the Ring does not like more than 1.4v according to buildzoids latest video.
all CPUs that are breaking are running at way beyond 1.45V Vcore which is also fed to the cache/ring/uncore.

I've tested on mine, and yeah, ring degraded immediately even running light workloads at 1.4v

FYI the problem can't be related to overclocking or overvolting, neither by the user nor the mainboard manufacturer.

These servers run W680 boards that don't do that sort of thing.
