It's why everything is made in batches
Otherwise known as "Lots" but yes, absolutely.

Once I bought a new OEM 8.1 OS DVD and it had scratches from the factory....
I have seen this too. My "guess" is the disk somehow slipped and moved out of proper alignment in the robot's arm/fingers, or somewhere along the automated conveyer system, and it took a beating from there. What I find disturbing is that the disk was not rejected because, IMO, there should have been multiple laser sensors in place all along the way that had one job - to ensure the disks where positioned in proper alignment as they moved from start to finish.

Anyone ever tried using these "validation" OS images?
I've heard of these, haven't tried them yet. From what I've been told about them, the differences are minor.

Hey suddenly the desktop is eligeble for Windows 11 (with TPM turned off in BIOS). Weird, because until now it has specifically said Windows 11 is not compatible with the computer.

Either a glitch, or MS are getting desperate and need to bump up those adoption numbers to look good.

Wait, what? Tell us more.

I'm leaning towards glitch, but hoping for the ease-up on restrictions.

I also saw the Windows 11 full screen ad at one of my work's computers today, and once or twice before. An Ivy-Bridge Core i3-3250 machine, at that, with no TPM and no Secure Boot (heck I think it's in CSM mode)

EDIT: Yep, it's in CSM/Legacy mode. It does have virtualization support enabled from the BIOS but virtualization-based security features are not active.
EDIT2: Machine still reports it's incompatible with Windows 11 in the Windows Update page. No updates were installed today but the computer has been permanently on since last week, so the ad might have come with update KB5040427

Decided to install Win11 LTSC on my laptop.

So far, having quite a few stability issues. I just had a hard crash and BSOD after waking the laptop from sleep with the dGPU enabled.

Yesterday I had a BSOD after disconnecting and reconnecting a Thunderbolt eGPU.

But then again, the 2022 Zephyrus G14 isn't the most reliable laptop, and I do have the beta BIOS installed for USB4 support.

On the plus side, one issue I had with the right USB C port was resolved in Windows 11.

EDIT: Had the laptop lock up after waking it without the dGPU enabled. Never had these issues in Windows 10.

EDIT 2: I think the actual issue is that I decided to run SDIO. I don't know why I keep using that program, as I've had nothing but problems with it (except on older systems). Reverted to the restore point from before running it, and it seems to be fine now.

I hate to say it, that is likely your problem.

Yeah, that's one of the many reasons I switched to 11. Things are just better on 11 for hardware, especially USB.

If having beta USB-4 BIOS breaks normal Win11 behavior, that predicts MS will have to patch USB-4... is USB-4 out anyway, really !?

As Lex mentioned, it is. But if you hoped (as most sane people did) that it would be at least somewhat of a saner, less “WTF am I looking at” standard than the absolute mess that USB 3 turned out to be… well, it’s not, unfortunately. Like the fact that it’s basically Thunderbolt… except when it’s not. Or the fact there is already USB 4 and USB 4 Version 2.0. And base USB 4 is 40 Gbs. Except when it isn’t and is capped to 20.

I hate USB IF with a burning passion of a thousand supernovas.

I think it's way more sane. But we've been over your opinions elsewhere. Half of your concerns are based on fallback modes not implemented as the default in any certified product.

I might be missing something. USB3&4 seem perfectly excellent to me. Windows 11 support for all USB devices is better than Windows 10. So what did I miss?

@R-T-B
Half the spec is optional, which, yeah, I do believe makes it confusing. The baseline speed mandated is only 20 Gbps, from my understanding, which is 3.2 speeds. Higher is optional. The fact that I have to look up a table of all the optional specs USB4 supports is itself an indictment of the standard, IMO. But I am willing to give the standard time to cook and see how it shakes up. Oh, by the way, I… don’t remember us discussing this previously?

@lexluthermiester
Nah, this is me bitching off-topic, admittedly. Has nothing to do with Windows support and functionality and everything with how scuffed of a spec USB has been lately.

Theory vs practice. No one is making anything but full spec cables and devices.

If you are trying to argue USB-IF is a mess well that's an agreement from me.

Wireless USB is obsolete, dead and abandoned. About as far from “the future” as can be.

I hate USB IF with a burning passion of a thousand supernovas.
I don't understand this at all. Without such consortiums consisting of key members from across the multitude of industries within (and outside) the industry of IT, there would be no common industry standard I/0 protocols. No common voltages. No industry standard connections. No common anything. Every maker would have their own proprietary method of communication and connection with motherboards, or anything else. :( There would be no external hubs, no common cables. It would be a HUGE mess - at the consumers expense!!!

Yes, "universal" may be a bit of a misnomer as there certainly are many exceptions out there. But for the vast majority of devices, "universal" fits.

Much of the problem is self-inflicted by us consumers. "WE" have demanded smaller and thinner when it comes to our laptops and cell phones and other devices. This is one reason the old, standard, mini-stereo connector went away.

I said "outside" the industry of IT? I note my Garmin GPS uses USB for power. Even the little light set and JBL speaker for my bike charge via USB. My flashlight uses USB to charge. The wireless charging pad for my cell phone uses USB.

I could list a dozen more.

We also demanded USB ports not be keyed so we didn't have to fumble with which way is up or down. I love this!!!!

My point here is, I would need separate "proprietary" cables for each if there wasn't a standard connector, established by the USB IF.

Wireless USB is obsolete, dead and abandoned.
I don't understand this either.

I love my wireless keyboards and mice that work via a USB dongle. Wireless USB certainly is NOT obsolete, dead, or abandoned.

how scuffed of a spec USB has been lately.
I don't disagree but I think the latest "standard" is working to remedy that. The problem is three-fold. (1) There are millions and millions of devices still in use and working just fine with past standards still out there. (2) There are 1000s of manufacturers of 10s of 1000s different products, each with their own idea (often great ideas) on how to implement I/0. And (3) - and perhaps most impactful - the state-of-the-art in hardware and software is advancing across and throughout these industries at different rates.

That last point makes developing a truly "universal" "one-size-fits-all" standard nearly, if not completely, impossible.

That's not wireless USB, merely a 2.4 GHz receiver plugged into a USB port. The wireless signaling does not comply to a published USB standard.

Then please define what "wireless USB" is, and please show us an example of such a device.

Not obvious when body language and facial expressions cannot be seen or tone-of-voice cannot be heard. That's what emoticons are for.

Thanks for that link to Wireless USB. I understand now. I have to admit, it was so obscure (at least in my little bubble), I don't recall ever seeing it in action. Hence my confusion.
