More often than not you're watching 15 minutes of bullshit
15? I wish. More like 20, 25, or longer. :( I almost always never watch - even those from presenters I like. If I do watch, I slide it over to a secondary monitor and maybe catch what they say.

Kind of sensationalist to me... keyword is second hand, ie. used. It's always been buyer beware buying used crap. Threads all over about fake gpus from sketchy places etc etc.

Now if this came from a retailer, then yea its newsworthy.

This could have just been some dumb display sample someone resold and there may not actually be a vast criminal conspiracy of manufacturing of fake CPU's to this incredible level of detail and craftmanship.

Ironically someone could probably resell this on ebay now honestly as a rare deepfake CPU collectors item for more than the actual CPU would have been worth especially now an internet celebrity has touched it. All Der8auer needs to do is add some laser etching and resell for a charity event.

They might show up in more European countries soon, who knows.
I've been seeing a lot of suspicious Amazon listings recently for 7950x, 7950x3d, 7800x3d, and now 9950x typically following a pattern of $100 below trending prices. Amazon seems to put's what I would consider suspicious and strangely named sellers operating in Canada. I constantly have to click the other sellers link to find the real amazon listing. Buyer beware and double check your seller/shipper folks!

Der8auer discovered a fake AMD Ryzen 7 7800X3D that one of his followers bought from a second-hand platform.
The product looked authentic, but there was no chip module under the heatspreader.
It is unclear how many of these counterfeit chips are in circulation.

Bruce purchased a counterfeit Ryzen 7 7800X3D processor from Romanian second-hand platform OLX for 300 euros.
When the chip arrived, it was found to be non-functional. Bruce decided to take out a multimeter to check the product, and found that there was no power to it.
He then got in touch with der8auer, who subsequently purchased the counterfeit chip.

Weren't there fake AM4 CPUs in the past? Same IHS swaps

With todays manufacturing techniques, this really would not be hard to do at all..

Not even todays techniques.. counterfeit CPU;s have been a thing for a couple of decades now if not more..

Heck locked multipliers were created because of counterfeit products..

Something familiar happens in China. There's a second-hand platform called Xianyu where PCdiyers sell their items on it. In order to buy a same fake CPU(fake cover, fake base with a similar but different color of the origin one) of the one mentioned in the main post, simply type "broken cpu", and possibly you'll get one. I've not tried that, because buying a broken cpu does nothing good to me, and I just heard that from youtube.
I'm doubting whether there's a huge criminal legion doing this deal...

Romanian, says a lot tbh.

Best not to buy off some dodgy(ish) secondhand trading site, stick to CEX imo, at least it is tested and has warranty, which even ebay does not really.
I agree, although people in some countries aren't as lucky as we are in the UK with reputable second-hand shops like CEX. In lots of other countries, these shops don't exist, so your choice is either eBay, or some dodgier selling site.

Agreed. I can watch 15-30 minutes of something if the topic is really deep, as well as my curiosity about it. If it's just random news, I'd rather just skim through a written post in 10-20 seconds and be done with it.

I personally never have and never will buy used electronics UNLESS I personally know the seller and the history of the device. And I don't mean a friend of a friend, a neighbor's coworker, or a cousin's brother-in-law. I mean a specific person and original owner of the device that I have known as a friend, or a nearby long-time neighbor, or my actual first cousin - and I know where they live.

I know many have bought $1000s from eBay with no problems. But I also know and have heard horror stories of many who got ripped-off. If I am planning on getting years of service from the device, I will pay retail (hopefully on sale) price for a new product, in its original packaging, fully warranted by the manufacturer, and from a reputable authorized merchant.

Speaking of reputable sellers, I went out to https://www.olx.ro/ where the original buyer claims to have bought the chip and the first thing I noticed (after translating into English) on the webpage was,

RED FLAG WARNING SIGNS | HM3 Advocate

***

Side note and hypothetical question - I note the seller is in Romania and Romania is an EU member country. The EU has some of the better consumer protection laws in the world. I wonder if the buyer had any recourse here? Probably not.

OLX is a classifieds website similar to craigslist, so the whole "meet up to purchase" is not that unusual from that perspective. They've only come up with an escrow service (OLX Pay) recently. Many countries have their version of the platform, but yes, it's always been prone to scams but attract people due to low cost

MercadoLibre/MercadoPago which operate in LATAM/Brazil is closer to eBay/PayPal as in that the escrow service is central to the business, I'm sure other regions also have similarly reputable marketplace services, though.

Looking at the color of the PCB of the fake chip from the video I can see similar on Amazon listings. For example comparing the images of two Amazon listings to an ebay image it seems perhaps the bottom amazon image might indicate a fake CPU. (nevermind for a moment the prices are unusual)

I'm 95% sure that's just lighting at play...........

That said I wouldn't buy either of those. One would have to be out of their mind to shop for used CPUs on Amazon of all places.

As Der8auer saying in they video lighting can make a difference.
This fake CPU package has blue PCB compared to more green PCB of most AM5 but he also showed one legit CPU that was closer to the fake one in PCB color.
So cant be identified as legit/fake by PCB color on picture.

As for used parts, I would only buy used (never did so far) when you have the ability to get the product test it for a couple of days and decide to keep it.
Here we have market place like a small amazon where you can buy online new hardware from online or physical stores.
Lately there is a new section for used parts that users can sell. Sold my old 5700XT 6 months ago. When someone wanted it, I packet it, and a courier came and received it.
The "buyer" received it, test it and decided to keep it. Then I got my money. Until then the payment was on hold. The buyer has the option to not keep the used product for whatever reason within 2 days.
This is how used marketplace should always work.

I understand that this is not as easy when the market is international.
