I mean, do whatever you like, who the hell am I to stop you. Support ends regardless, which means the whole ecosystem of browsers and apps that still get updates will start considering removing support for outdated OS because supporting those outdated OS means spending time fixing things for old OS that at that point fairly few will keep using.

So it's something you have to consider if you intend for your machine to keep running newer versions of whatever software it is beyond the EOL of OS support.

If you no longer get security updates for whatever you use, you should consider upgrading it, unless it's an offline machine.

You laugh theFOol, but droopyRO is exactly right. It is narrowminded to think otherwise.

Why? Just look at all the excuses people who continue to use unsupported operating systems use to justify their actions. They make it all about themselves when that is not the reason at all!

If one knows what unsupported means, I don't care if they choose to continue to use an unsupported OS and they get infected. That's all on them.

What I care about is such selfishness resulting in threats to others. One common trait among almost all malware is it wants to propagate and infect others. And it does this by reaching out to other "connected" computers on the network. And if that network has internet access, then it tries to reach out there too.

What amazes me is those who truly believe they are smarter than all the bad guys out there. Now that's funny - in a tragic sort of way. Or how they truly believe it would be totally impossible for them to ever inadvertently click on a link, attachment, download or popup they shouldn't have. I sure wish I could walk on water too.

I will concede that when support ends, it is not necessary to immediately rush out and upgrade because the better security programs will continue to protect those computers even when the user (ALWAYS the weakest link in security) won't. But even that support won't last forever - especially when the OS developer is no longer providing patches for newly discovered vulnerabilities.

That said, end of support is never suddenly sprung upon us out of the blue. Typically users have YEARS to prepare for it making those excuses even more flimsy.

This is just for information.

Please pay attention to the folders named "found"

Yesterday Window 11 24 H2 wanted to fix C: during bootup. Fixed something and rebootet. -> See directory found.000 ~188MB size
There was a cold bootup between where I aborted the file system check.
Today Windows wanted to check C: and fixed something. -> See directory found.001 ~92MB size

I do expect that a file system check for ntfs fixes C: and do not do a file system check on the next bootup.

This show when the folders were created which is equal with the windows updated check C: file system check timestamp
Code:
roman@Sienna_Cichlid /mnt/windows $ ls -alhd found*
drwxrwxrwx 1 roman roman 1.8M Nov 2 14:09 found.000
drwxrwxrwx 1 roman roman 236K Nov 3 19:15 found.001

Graphical View of my C:

03-11-2024_21:16:45_screenshot.png

I love those created folders with "zero" contents. (That is the right pane. As you can see most of the folders are just there without contents.)
Some people will remember norton commander. Or know the software midnight commander

I only play with windows 11 pro. I hardly bother changing anything. Exceptions are Windows updates, a few changes in the amd graphic card driver and the corresponding folders for different software in c:

The C: drive is around ~1.5TB of 2TB KC3000. ~400GB are used for gnu gentoo linux. If the Kingstom KC3000 drive had any issues I would have seen it ages ago with backups of my gentoo linux or in my daily linux usage.

I'm sorry but I have no idea what the heck all that is about or what does it have to do with 24H2.

That said...
I do expect that a file system check for ntfs fixes C: and do not do a file system check on the next bootup.
If you use the /f (fix errors) or /r (locate and mark bad sectors while recovering information if possible) parameters for chkdsk on your system drive, it won't be checked while the system is online, but rather during the next boot, since it can't lock the drive otherwise. This limitation also obviously applies to checks ordered automatically by the system itself.

This has been known behavior since Windows 2000.

:( Right. Must be nice to have never been a newbie, unaware of the facts, or an expert in computer technologies and security, and always smarter than all others. Got it.

FTR, I know of no one who thought their computer would suddenly BSOD. I am aware of several inexperienced users, and other users who felt their computers were just another necessary appliance in their homes, who were afraid their computers would suddenly become vulnerable to malware, or suddenly stop working. But I quickly add those fears were caused by FUD spread by fearmongers in the IT media and idiots blogger and forum posters spewing nonsense.

That's not true at all. Just because support ends doesn't mean that an OS is going to implode. 9X didn't, XP didn't and still hasn't, Vista didn't and hasn't, 7 still hasn't and 10 won't. The reality is that microsoft has gone out of it's way to make every version of Windows reasonably secure. They're not going to fall apart. Hell Windows XP and 7 are both still very reasonable for online use IF one takes the proper precautions. Windows 10 will be fine for at least 1 year beyond end of support and when proper measures are taken will be fine after that.

True, some people are like that. It's dumb as dog poop.

Please, let's not start that..

No, but there are people who think their "Windows start to crash and burn"(direct quote) if they don't upgrade. Total moose muffins.

But I quickly add those fears were caused by FUD spread by fearmongers in the IT media and idiots blogger and forum posters spewing nonsense.
Oh so true! It's really irritating!!

Dunno why the hell Win11 Pro doesn't offer this update to me. Still running 23H2 and "check for updates" does nothing.

Hard to say, 5800X should be modern enough :kookoo:
If the TPM is not enabled and in use, the upgrade might not be offered to you. Fresh installs should be something you look forward to. Or just stay on 23H2 which is still supported. Give 24H2 time to have the bugs/glitches/kinks worked out.

(I generally don't look at people's system specs..)

TPM and other needed stuff has been enabled since I had a R5 3600. This current install is from 29.8.2024 so not that long ago :kookoo:

Nothing to do but wait then, or, alternatively, download a 24H2 ISO and upgrade to the newer feature update using that, as if it were a Windows version upgrade

Though if the upgrade isn't being offered to you, I'd wait. There might be a reason.

So that would install just like a normal OS upgrade, all my stuff would remain just like going from Win10 -> Win11 for example?

Yeah. Just make sure to pick the update option, it should tell you explicitly that it's going to keep your files, your settings and your programs in place.

But again, if Microsoft hasn't offered the update to you yet, you can just wait too. It's all mostly small QoL stuff or security-related anyway.

No, I'd say that you should certainly start thinking about it. No fear mongering with that statement. He's not saying "GET OFF NOW!!!" or anything, hes saying... time to start thinking if you want to stay online longterm. Which it is.

Ninja'd! Was about to suggest that next.

Yes, it should. So the way you'd do that is, download the iso, write it to a usb drive, then run setup from said usb drive and let it upgrade as usual.

However, there have been some reports that upgrades and updates are equally having problems. Therefore, you should not feel in any rush to jump to 24H2. It would be better to wait until Feb or Mar of next year and come back to look at it, unless you want to do a fresh install, which has been problem free so far.

No rush, I was just practically wondering that why the update isn't offered for me. :)

No rush, I was just practically wondering that why the update isn't offered for me. :)
Something else to consider, microsoft updates the download iso as fixes and patches are made and validated. The suggestion to wait until next year was to give them time to sort things out and make an iso with all the wrinkles ironed out.

The latest win 11 image from MS has 24H2 by default. I installed it yesterday on my Gigabyte B650 Aorus Elite board & so far with OC testing, its performing well with no issues. Don't know why all the fuss over this? I'm also using a device that has only win 10 driver available - my soundcard, & working just as usual as it was on 23H2. My 9700X with tuned PBO (before its upgrade at end of this week) is also performing exactly the same as on 23H2 with a different motherboard.
NOTHING is broken & all is well...
So calm down everybody & go about your daily business.

Fear monger much?

It's not fearmongering. I like Windows 7 as much as the next guy, but I have come to terms that its time has come and gone. I'd use it forever if I could, but as security, runtime, API, browser, middleware and driver updates have all been completely cut off, it's no longer viable to do so.

Sure, you can buy an earlier generation socket AM4 platform plus a RX 6900 XT or RTX 3090 Ti and keep within the band of "supported" hardware while more or less upkeeping performance; but that becomes less and less useful as time goes on, due to the aforementioned updates being cut off, the system will eventually fall too far behind for anything to be realistically compatible with it. Things like kernel extensions, live-patching software and the one-off backport like Supermium can only carry the OS so far.
