Tested with Sabertooth x58 using a XEON 5690 with 48 GByte main memory.
The NVMe drive was a Samsung 970 Evo Plus (2 TB, latest firmware).
This is quite good, but I observe extremely long boot up times:
- With a short '_' cursor blinking top left from last BIOS message to occurance of Windows 11 boot logo: ~ 30 s.
- From begin of the Windows 11 boot logo showing until white circle indicating bootup: 20 s
- The rest (some 10 s) can be attributed to the normal Windows boot process.
Since all other drives including a Samsung SATA SSD 840 Pro (256 GByte) are booting much faster than
the NVMe Samsung drive, I suspect either the BIOS mod or a flaky Samsung firmware being the culprit.
Thank you for the good work!

i had the same problem with the 980 Pro 2TB, where i didnt have any with same model 1TB.
someone else is having 1 minute boot time with a 990 2TB

so i guess it s the 2TB that is the issue. it s not a big deal when the computer is 24/7, i guess it must be annoying if you turn on the computer 10 times a day.

This is quite good, but I observe extremely long boot up times:
Tell me you are using bios modded ver. for your mobo from the first post ?
Samsung 970 Evo plus is know it for slow boot and came in multiple variants according with techPowerUp ssd database.
What is your device id ?
You can try other way than the bios from the first post which is done with Samsung ssd 950 pro OpRom.
If you want to use another Option Rom from VMware maybe you boot time will decrease . ( https://winraid.level1techs.com/t/e...vme-option-rom-for-amibios8-core-legacy/40283 )
Take a look at my guide ( and at the previous link ) and prepare modded bios for your mobo .

Catup, i really think it s linked to the size of the drive. something goes bad over 1TB and boot takes 2 times a 20sec pause. (post bios, and then, post windows boot, aka, windows logo appears, and the spiral appears only 15 20 sec later)

i tested it on both of my drives. it really seems to be a matter of size.

Ok MrPanda but from work with two drives 980 and 990 (only 1Tb each) it happened the same long windows post in the drive added with samsung option rom and very short in the drive added with VMware option rom . If you tested both Option rom with your drive it seems that you are right and the size is the matter.

oh you're right, i totally forgot about the vmware. well the samsung rom behaves differently if it is 1TB or 2TB. i couldnt test the vmware rom because it implies a LOT of troubles on my computer with the Grub boot manager, if disks get a different name, well, i'm basically offline -it will not be easy at all to get back a working boot if the one i currently have fails-

ideally if i had a spare nvme i could try on a blank system. depends if i'm given some broken hardware with spare parts i can use. recently, people keep the spares and even the broken things, they dont "give" much anymore.

Please study the information in this thread and we can point you in the right direction when you need and ask in order to be able by yourself understand that this process is not easy and is risky too .Here you can find all info for modding your motherboard bios by yourself . After reading take a look carefully at the guide of @MrPanda .

I also have a GA-X58A-UD3R motherboard, which I inherited and have now brought back to life. I have already delved a bit into the topic, and although it was a bit bumpy at first, it worked out quite well overall. Currently, I am using a Samsung SSD 950 PRO with 256 GB together with a SABRENT PCIe M.2 adapter (PCIe X16/X8/X4 card) that is frequently mentioned here. I am now considering whether to integrate a Samsung 970 Pro – basically for eternity ;-). Perhaps there is already a BIOS available for this – certainly not uncommon – configuration. If not, that's fine too; I’ll take care of it in the coming weeks.
Otherwise, thanks for all the very helpful and interesting contributions!

Hello Goldfinger,

you will have to change one byte value in the bios mod, it s not very complicated, the hardest part being to identify correctly the hardware hex code of the drive you will use in the future.

please refer to the quick guide i wrote, link to message is in my signature. if you feel lost reading the different steps, dont hesitate to ask for clarifications, we will be around to help.

have a great weekend

Hello,

First of all, congratulations on the excellent work you are doing. It’s truly impressive! I’m reaching out because I have an Asus PT6 WS Pro motherboard, and I would like to boot Windows directly from an M.2 NVMe disk adapter. I have downloaded your ROM for the PT6 WS Pro. Thank you again for providing that.

I was wondering if it is possible to have the M.2 NVMe drive recognized in the BIOS? I would appreciate any help you can offer.

Thank you in advance

Hello. the originally modded bios contains a couple nvme drives signatures that were popular a year ago.
if you have a different drive, you have to identify its hex code signature and modify the modded bios to suit your current drive, then flash again, and you will see your drive in the bootable devices.

please read Catup's guide which is linked in this message signature.

goodluck, and keep us informed.

I followed the tutorial Catup's guide to flash the bios but the bios does not recognize the nvme disk

I followed to the letter

but not recognized by bios

an idea?

It is time !!

After insert your hardware (nvme m2 ssd in PCI slot ofcourse with your choice adapter )
First download your motherboard latest bios rom file ( asus x58 - ami bios ) .
the following files will be need :
- bios rom file
- mmtool
- NvmeOpRom
- OpRomCfg
Put those files in folder named test in C drive .
- note your hardware NVME ssd vendor ID and device ID (Example 144D for samsung and Device ID A80A for 980 pro 1Tb ) .Go to computer > manage>device Manager >Storage controllers > Nvme controller >Right click properties > details>Drop down menu >Hardware ID > PCI\VEN_144D&DEV_A80A&SUBSYS_A801144D&REV_00 those two groups of four characters reprezent Vendor ID and Device ID
Now go to your test folder created previously open here cmd with administrative rights and type :
" OpRomCfg NvmeOpRom.bin 144D A80A " (please put the two groups characters of your hardware )
Hit enter and you will see the operation was successful .
Now open the file mmtool hit load and navigate to test folder and load your bios rom file .
Now you should insert your hardware in the bios file .
so hit field insert and ad the following in field Module file browse your computer to folder test and add previously modified NvmeOpRom file .
In the field Module ID add 20 which is PCI option Rom (your nvme SSD is pci device )
In Offset/VID field add vendor ID 144D
In seg/DID field add Device ID A80A
Hit Insert
Hit save rom and overwrite the previously loaded Bios file rom or hit save rom as to save it with other name .
That are all steps to go to modded bios rom file in order to be able to boot from your Nvme m2 ssd .
Flash your bios and check the result
Please remember that the groups of characters with red colour is an example do not use it .Check your hardware like i said !!!

Ok .please tell me do you identify the Vendor Id and device Id of your hardware (nvme ssd ) ?
Most mistake to do this is to ad the two groups of four characters with mmtool without modify Nvme OpRom specific again for your hardware .Please be careful first modify unmodified NvmeOpRom with OpRomCfg .

Hello @sgk008 the two groups marked is the info of your Crucial nvme ssd .If you have any question regarding process please ask .
You are sure that is Crucial P3 ? You have more than one nvme ssd in your system ? It look like your device is Crucial P2 according with site Device Hunt (maybe the site is not update ). Please go to Device Manager and see how many nvme storage controllers you have listed .
