If anything, it would also greatly help AMD, as they'd finally prioritize faster firmware updates and tweaks based on his input as he pushes their cards to the limit. And if AMD is just as accommodating with him as they were with their own in-house teams that pushed their Ryzens to the limit and experiment (per the GN AMD tour), could maybe result in better performance in non-Kingpin cards too.
Yeah I feel they sometimes do push the silicon over the years (x1950, HD 4890, 6950XT) and all of them were arguably bangers. If there's one thing Kingpin knows it's to push the silicon way beyond the edge and I do hope he joins them or at least does a collab of sorts.
I miss those AMD cards, I think the last one I can think of that was way overkill and binned like hell was the HD 7970 Matrix Platinum. The 7970 was an immense overclocker anyway and the matrix was an absolute blast. It was also the first ARGB component I ever used and it actually had a use for it (would change static colours depending on load) unlike the useless rainbows everywhere nowadays. Oh and it absolutely put the GTX 680 to shame.
Having systems with GPU's from both camps for decades, I never understood why the 7970 didn't sell a lot more. It was architecturally so much better than it's nvidia equivalents, aged much better and was even released months earlier. But reviewers at the time praised the 680 to the moon and back mainly because it consumed a tiny bit less power, was $50 cheaper and was a miniscule amount faster at launch which turned out to be much slower months down the line and the gap only increased. Most reviewers didn't bother to mention that when both were overclocked, the 7970 was quite a bit faster and some reviewers didn't even bother to mention it was 2GB vs 7970's 3GB which really did matter not too long after. As a whole, most reviewers failed hard as a whole during that time and the 680 aged like a POS. I know because i saw it first hand, and I also know the matrix I had put any gtx680/770 to shame at any point in their career.
I'm not sure why I went on a tangent, I think mentioning those cards sort of took me back in the days and that particular time was a bit of a head scratcher. But yeah Kingpin would probably do well to jump ship if the other ship is any good. I also bet he has some beef with nvidia after the whole EVGA fiasco, not surprised he's making these comments.
When was the last time he was actually relevant?
He made some of the best XOC cards to have ever been released and it wasn't too long ago..
