Certainly the industry agrees with you.
A lot og gamers do to. We like the feature. When done well, it looks amazing, even on the lower settings.
RT will eventually require kW GPUs
Doubtful. The RTX 20X0 series cards were nowhere near that level of power and STILL perform well. Even the RX 6X00 series from AMD looks great.

What IC fabs need to do is find a way to make performance improve without increasing power usage.

It just seems like the industry is moving in a different direction compared to what gamers want (if we can believe in the validity of the poll results).

The problem with the poll is that because what _roman_ said he was doing (voting multiple times) spoils the usefulness of the poll for us all. We don't know what he meant by multiple. Was it 5 times or 10 or 1,000 times? Note that only one person called him out for the dishonesty (that was me) so maybe others started doing it too thinking hardly anyone cared anyway.

The bottom line is that Daven drew the conclusion from the results that no one cares about RT which is utterly wrong.

I thought about sending W1zzard a PM that people were borking his polls but then it occurred to me that there may not be anything that can be done about it if the poll is open to anyone visiting the site whether they are a member or not as another member pointed out. If the vote is linked to the IP address then to limit it to 1 vote per address would prevent family members living in the same house from being able to also vote. Possibly limiting it to 5 votes per address might work but I'm not sure if it's something to ask him to spend his time coding for because he's already under a heavy work load.

I think the gap between the 5080 and 5090 is the largest ever. But neither AMD nor Intel look to be planning anything big enough to fit between them.

Why compete with yourself? I guess Nvidia has no obligation to do so. But it leaves me with ill will toward Nvidia.

You are forgetting games only ray trace SOME elements in a frame. Full path ray tracing of all elements in a frame will require kW GPUs and higher.

It can both be true that the poll is borked and no one cares about ray tracing. However I think the poll is more or less accurate for at least the TPU community as the moderators are probably blocking major breaches.

Ok, not really a good debate point and no one but devs care about that distinction. We gamers just want our games to (A) Look good, (B) Run fast, (C) not need a nuclear power station to run & cool and (D) not cost as much a nuclear power station.

Put another way, your point wasn't one.

Gpu pricing is still ridiculous, Raster Performance, Upscaling, Frame Gen and vram are the other most important factors in a gpu.

How can the moderators block people abusing the poll when the abusers aren't even signed in? How would the moderators even know? Why is AMD considerably improving RT performance in the next generation when, as you say, no one cares about RT?

"Energy Efficiency" ? Since when did computer overclockers care about that!

RT / Pathtracing has always been the holy grail of computer graphics since the start and now that we are getting it in real time it is amazing.
The other feature I would want more than anything else would be like an ai co processor that can unlock some kind of general intelligence to play against in games instead of the typical one-dimensional, scripted ai that is in all the games now.

The other killer feature of the nvidia cards to me is DLAA since it has better picture quality than TAA which is full of disgusting blurring and ghosting. The only other way to combat TAA is to render the game at a higher res which is way more taxing performance wise.

The price of electricity is on average 23 cents per kilowatt hour in the US. I don't really care about efficiency until it gets to $3 -5 per hour at current dollar value.

I voted for that because I don't want midrange cards to eat 250-300 Watts and come with gigantic triple-slot coolers. I remember when midrange was 120 W in true ITX form factor. Those were good times.

Pricing is inconsequential if you don't upgrade every generation, like you shouldn't anyway because it's not worth it.

I didn't vote for energy efficiency because saving 50 or even 100 watts while gaming an average of 20 hours a week doesn't amount to anything much for me on my power bill but bear in mind that I only pay 14 cents per kWh which is pretty cheap. I've seen some members post here that they pay over 60 cents per kWh or even more if they go over a cap on there electrical usage too much during peak months so efficiency is important in probably every device they buy. It would be for me too if I were in those circumstances. Add to that probably quite a few here are using video cards for work also so energy efficiency becomes even more of an issue.

I can see why energy efficiency and raster performance would be the most important choices in the poll. I do wonder why pricing importance came in so low though. It makes it seem like gamers don't care much that they are being overcharged when I know that is not a fact.

Energy efficiency is highly misunderstood, anyway. No miracles are possible nowadays without radically different architectures that haven't been conceived yet. So, they're generally a function of the manufacturing process and of how willing manufacturers (and end users) are to push frequencies/voltages up. Turn your frequencies down and you'll have efficiency back; the same holds true for CPUs.

In my opinion, spending $200 every year, or $600 every three years is pretty much the same. I wouldn't mind having a card like this (link) again, though, which can only be achieved with a highly efficient GPU.

I thought that the designers working in the GPU departments of the companies were sweating hard every day to finally invent some ultra-modern "perpetuum mobile" graphics architecture that would give us RTX 5090 performance, at no more than 75 watts consumption for the entire video card. And they sat and played Tetris and pushed us some outdated and outdated architectures from the end of the 20th century, but adapted to a modern lithographic node, which only drain our bank accounts. /s

performance per watt, performance per $, performance per cubic inch taken in my PC - all that matters to me. A $1000 - $2000 GPU's need to die, wasteful F-350's that have ruined PC gaming for me. When AMD released the HD 4850 and 4870, I was hopeful that was the direction the market would go. PC gaming has turned into some spoiled elite smug fest, while consoles have turned into diskless bloated media boxes with no creative or unique games.

Aww :) RT is pretty low. What happen to Nvidia ftw & AMD sux cus they can't do Rtrazzinggzingzing? Funny thing is, that's pretty much what everyone seems to think. I always see people picking all other options. Especially higher frames. RT is usually a frame killah.

But yea, i prefer raster too. This is coming from someone that never owned an AMD product. I just find it funny how much people hate that company nowadays. I agree with the AMD people. Raytracing sux, its all bout the fps at a decent price. EF is better at Nvidia but not by a ton. Im just too used to Nvidia to ever switch, but yeah. AMD is pretty decent.

Yeah. From $600 too expensive to $400 too expensive. Just a reminder: RTX 4080 is factually an xx70 tier GPU (don't believe me? Fine but you still wanna check the die size and transistor count out) that's sold for 4 figures only because NV can get away with it.
Be happy they tried that with a 70 tier GPU. They could have always tried to trick us with a 60 one :D

Wow, crazy votes for energy efficiency!! Doesn't matter to me much, I don't think a GPU would hold a candle to the 150+kw hrs/mo my clothes dryer uses, or when winter comes around and the vehicle block heaters are sucking back 500W each.

I think media/codec engine encode/decode matters somewhat.

Energy efficiency, this should always matter first and foremost, now that RT has kind of stepped beyond being a gimmick in games I'm starting to care about that metric too. Also a reason I found it annoying to penalize cards before this point for being RT capable, RT perf anything lesser than a 4070 is pointless.

If you are buying a GPU for the express purposes of using it as a space heater I guess you have a point.

What was so good about the 30 series?
The price shift, the 2080ti (while overpriced) was put in it's place well and truly by the 3080 being markedly faster and substantially cheaper (either metric at the time would have been considered a decent uptick, but both made really decent impact - then crypto mining destroyed it)

loose numbers but the 3080 was 20ish percent faster and it's RRP was 700 vs 1200 for the 2080Ti

Well point is, I use 750 to 1000kw.hrs a month, and my gpu might be 1-2kwhrs of that. So if next gen is the same energy efficiency.....meh I guess. It's way beyond the point of diminishing returns on electricity cost savings for me.

But you couldn't get any card for RRP because of crypto. Then the price hike carried on like nothing happened. Both the 30 and 40 series are a big dumpster fire, imo.
