The Mobility Radeon HD 4870 X2 was a mobile graphics chip by ATI, launched on January 9th, 2009. Built on the 55 nm process, and based on the M98 graphics processor, in its M98 XT L2 variant, the chip supports DirectX 10.1. Since Mobility Radeon HD 4870 X2 does not support DirectX 11 or DirectX 12, it might not be able to run all the latest games. The M98 graphics processor is an average sized chip with a die area of 256 mm² and 956 million transistors. Mobility Radeon HD 4870 X2 combines two graphics processors to increase performance. It features 800 shading units, 40 texture mapping units, and 16 ROPs, per GPU. ATI has paired 2,048 MB GDDR5 memory with the Mobility Radeon HD 4870 X2, which are connected using a 256-bit memory interface per GPU (each GPU manages 1,024 MB). The GPU is operating at a frequency of 550 MHz, memory is running at 700 MHz (2.8 Gbps effective).
Being a mxm module card, the ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4870 X2 does not require any additional power connector, its power draw is not exactly known. This device has no display connectivity, as it is not designed to have monitors connected to it. Rather it is intended for use in laptop/notebooks and will use the output of the host mobile device. Mobility Radeon HD 4870 X2 is connected to the rest of the system using a PCI-Express 2.0 x16 interface.
