Sony Semiconductor Solutions Corporation (SSS) announced the upcoming release of the ECX344A, a large-size, high-definition 1.3-type OLED Microdisplay with 4K resolution which will allow for greater photo-realistic VR and AR experiences.

The new OLED Microdisplay is mainly intended for virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR) head-mounted display applications. It delivers 4K resolution with a 1.3-type large-size display by employing miniaturization processes that SSS has achieved while developing camera electronic viewfinders (EVFs), as well as its own pixel drive circuits. A new high-speed driver circuit is included in the microdisplay to enable a high frame rate even at 4K resolution, allowing for smooth image quality with an enhanced sense of reality. ViewSonic has revealed a new 15.6-inch 4K OLED portable display, model name VX1622-K, to the Chinese public as reported by IT Home last week. This easily movable and convenient monitor is expected to get a global release in the near future - various hardware news outlets have found related documentation on Viewsonic's global site, as well as standard drivers signed for Windows 10 & 11 - so it seems that the VX1622-K is not destined to be a China-exclusive model.

Viewsonic's portable OLED monitor is similar in size to displays featured on industry standard laptops - coming in at 15.6 inches - its main surface is treated with an anti-glare multi-layer film. The panel can support resolutions going up to 4K (3840x2160px) resolution, with an aspect ratio of 16:9. It is capable of displaying a 60 Hz refresh rate, and can reach 440cd/㎡ maximum brightness, alongside a contrast ratio of 1,000,000:1. Screen responsive is really good with a 1 ms measured rating. Visual professionals/creative-types should be happy with the display's 100% Adobe RGB and DCI-P3 color gamut coverage, although there is a "TBD" marker next to this information on the spec sheet. Color depth is rated at 1.07 billion colors (8-bit + FRC) and settings can provide an HDR True Black 500 standard. The VX1622-K can be hooked up to computer hardware via its Mini-HDMI or Type-C connectors.

Real-time ray tracing (RT), using Microsoft DirectX ray tracing (DXR) and Vulkan Ray Tracing, adds a new level of incredible realism to games through effects like ray-traced reflections, shadows, ambient occlusion, and global illumination. Ray tracing is used in many of the latest games such as The Callisto Protocol, F1 22, Marvel's Spider-Man: Miles Morales, and Returnal to maximize graphics fidelity and deliver the ultimate visual experience.

There's no shortage of large gaming monitors on the market, but to date, almost all of them have been stuck at the same 120 Hz refresh rate as you'd see on higher-end TVs. InnoLux had a new 50-inch panel on display at Touch Taiwan that's capable of 240 Hz refresh rate, something that is still quite rare in this segment, especially as it's a 4K display panel. In all fairness, it's a TV by all intents, just without a tuner and it might appeal to console gamers, but it's not all good news.

InnoLux went with a-si NPVA technology for the panel, in other words, this is a modern VA panel, with the potential ghosting issues that VA panels suffer from. On the other hand, InnoLux claims support for FreeSync Premium Pro support with a VRR range from 48 to 240 Hz. The panel also has a contrast ratio of 7000:1, but no brightness details were given. That said, FreeSync Premium Pro requires HDR support, although it doesn't specify what kind of HDR, but it means the panel will at least support 400 cd/m² in HDR mode. It's also said to support 96 percent of the DCI-P3 colour gamut, suggesting good colour reproduction and it's said to have a 2 ms grey to grey response time.
