Fractal Design Lumen AIO-series Manufacturing Issue Affects CPU-Temperatures: Replacements Offered

We have discovered an issue with our all-in-one watercooler Lumen. Following user reports of an increase in CPU temperatures, an investigation was started to determine the potential cause. Our findings conclude that the soldering material used in the aluminium radiator, as well as impurities introduced during manufacturing, may cause a reaction with the chemical composition of the cooling fluid. Over time this may lead to sediment build-up in the circulating liquid getting caught in the fins of the CPU block, causing an increase in temperatures as a result of the blockage.

Although Lumen units that are not currently causing temperature issues are safe for continued use, the experience of our users is our main priority. We have therefore decided to halt all Lumen sales globally, until we are satisfied that the quality standards we and our users expect are fully met. In order to address the issue, our teams will be working on a new version with an updated radiator and a new liquid formula, produced following revised processes and guidelines for assembly. With our currently estimated timeline, we are hoping to have new units available as replacements for Lumen owners, as well as substitutes for stock at distributors and resellers; in about six weeks. A web form for users to request a replacement can be found on our dedicated website, which also provides ongoing updates, timeline and further information. Ticket holders will also receive updates via e-mail. We sincerely apologize for the inconvenience.

AMD Ryzen 9 7950X Boosts to 5.85 GHz Only if You Can Keep it Under 50°C

AMD's upcoming Ryzen 9 7950X 16-core processor can boost at speeds of up to 5.85 GHz, even though its maximum boost frequency in the specs is 5.70 GHz. The processor needs temperatures below 50°C to boost up to 5.85 GHz. Above these temperatures, it will only boost up to the 5.70 GHz on the tin. There are four frequencies to keep in mind about the 7950X. First is the base frequency, of 4.50 GHz. Next up, is the all-core boost frequency, of 5.10 GHz. This is the frequency at which the processor can run all 16 of its cores, provided it stays away from the 95°C temperature throttle. 5.70 GHz is the maximum boost frequency you'll get on "some" of the cores if the temperature is maintained between 50-95°C. If you're able to keep temperature below 50°C, the processor can boost up to 5.85 GHz. AMD refers to 5.85 GHz as the "peak clock."

To be able to hit peak clocks, you should ideally need some serious cooling, such as a 360 mm DIY liquid cooling setup, or a 420 mm AIO CLC; however in some circumstances, such as the system starting up from a cold-boot in a room with low ambient temperatures, the processor should hit peak clocks as it's approaching the 50°C-mark. AMD is making no pretenses that the 7950X is a high-power chip. Its TDP is rated at 170 W, and its PPT (package power tracking) limit at 230 W. By setting the TDP at 170 W from the get go, AMD is hinting that one can forget about aftermarket tower-type air-cooling, and head straight to AIO liquid cooling.

Lenovo Legion Prebuilt with 4-slot RTX 4090 Leaked

Here's the first picture of a Lenovo Legion prebuilt gaming desktop with what is allegedly an OEM NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4090 "Ada" graphics card designed by Lenovo. The card features a mammoth 4-slot air-based triple-fan cooling solution, and draws power from a single 12+4 pin ATX 12VHPWR connector that's capable of delivering up to 600 W of power with +100% excursions (spikes). The card is installed on a custom motherboard by Lenovo which is Socket LGA1700, and likely features a 12th- or 13th Gen Intel Core processor, cooled by a liquid AIO CLC. Take this leak with a grain of salt, though. The "90" in the masked out "GeForce RTX 4090" logo has a different typeface from the one we're seeing on leaked RTX 4090 retail boxes from the likes of ZOTAC and GIGABYTE.

SilverStone Readies the VIDA Slim Line of AIO CPU Coolers

SilverStone is readying the VIDA Silm line of all-in-one liquid CPU coolers. The cooler will come in variants based on radiator size, and in the future perhaps even in a white color trim. The star attraction is the cooler's slim water-block, and the 22 mm-thick radiator. Depending on the radiator size, you get one or more 15 mm-thick 120 mm fans, which takes the total radiator thickness (with fan(s) installed), to just 38 mm. The fans turn at speeds of up to 1,850 RPM, pushing, up to 68.33 CFM of airflow, and 2.59 mm H₂O pressure. The company didn't announce pricing or availability.

Team Group Launches AIO Cooler with Support for PCIe 5.0 NVMe SSDs

In recent years, consumer storage products have seen rapid developments. This year, the industry will officially be entering the first year of Gen5 SSDs. In response to risen temperatures caused by the high transfer speeds of PCIe Gen 5 SSDs, T-FORCE, the gaming sub-brand of Team Group, has launched the world's first all-in-one ARGB liquid cooling system to reduce heat generated by both the CPU and SSD, allowing PCIe Gen5 SSDs to maintain optimal temperatures and stable, high-speed operations for sustained periods. With the new cooling solution, consumers can fully experience the efficient storage performance of next-generation SSDs without any compromises.

Beginning in the 2000s, as the consumer market demanded higher read and write speeds for storage devices, solid-state drives (SSDs) began to replace mechanical hard drives (HDDs) in large numbers. SATA SSDs eventually became the go-to choice for storage upgrades. With the demand for high-speed storage driven by big data and the spread of transmission technology, PCIe became the standard interface for high-speed transmission. In the past few years, read speeds of PCIe SSDs have increased from 3,500 MB/s in Gen3 to 7,000 MB/s in Gen4. PCIe Gen5 SSDs now have over 12,000 MB/s read and write speeds. The large leaps in transfer speeds of each successive generation of SSDs have led to increased power wattage, which in turn have resulted in higher operating temperatures. When SSDs experience rising operating temperatures at high transfer speeds, an automatic throttling mechanism is activated to protect components from damage caused by the high temperatures. With power consumption of approximately 12 W on a PCIe Gen4 SSD running at 7,000 MB/s, the controller temperature can reach over 110℃. When PCIe Gen5 SSDs have speeds of over 12,000 MB/s and consume 14 W or above, one can expect controller temperatures to rise sharply. Therefore, Team Group is committed to providing the best thermal solutions for stable, high-speed operation of SSDs over sustained periods.
