Sony Announces the PlayStation VR2 PC Adapter with August Availability

It appears that Sony decided to sneak out a new product during the already busy Computex week of new product announcements. This is something many PC gamers have been waiting for, at least those interested in VR gaming. Although the device itself is a rather nondescript black box with a cable at one end, it delivers what many have been hoping for, PC support for Sony's PlayStation VR2 headset. The little black box has inputs for the PlayStation VR2 headset and a single DisplayPort 1.4 input which is connected to your graphics card of choice, as well as a USB port for communication with the PC and a power input of some kind. The only potential downside here is that the adapter won't work with some gaming laptops that only have HDMI display output.

Sony's system requirements are rather pedestrian, although the company is recommending a GeForce RTX 3060 or an AMD Radeon RX 6600XT or better graphics card, for best performance. Another minimum requirement which not everyone might have on their desktop systems, is support for Bluetooth 4.0 or later, but this can easily be resolved with a cheap USB dongle. Sony didn't reveal the full hardware details, which makes it unclear if an extra power source is needed, but it's clear from one of the two photos provided by the company, that there's more to it than just the DisplayPort and USB cables. The adapter doesn't work on PC without a lot of caveats though, as "HDR, headset feedback, eye tracking, adaptive triggers, and haptic feedback (other than rumble), are not available when playing on PC" according to Sony's blog post. The PlayStation VR2 PC Adapter also requires the Sony PlayStation VR2 app to be installed and for now it appears to only be working with Steam VR. The adapter will be available in retail on the 7th of August for an MSRP of $59.99 / €59.99 / £49.99.

CPSC Demands a Recall of CableMod GPU Angled Adapters, Estimates $74.5K of Damaged Property

CableMod issued a statement—just before the last Christmas holiday—detailing a safety recall of 16-pin 12VHPWR angled adapters, version 1.0 and 1.1. This announcement received widespread media coverage (at least in tech circles), but some unfortunate customers have not yet received the memo about faulty adapters—CableMod's 90° angled and 180° hard connectors can overheat and in worst case scenarios, actually melt. HotHardware, amusingly named given this context, was the first hardware news outlet to notice that the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) had published a "GPU Angled Adapter" recall notice to its website earlier today, under "Recall number 24-112."

The US government body's listing outlines aforementioned hazardous conditions, along with an estimated 25,300 affected unit count. The CPSC's recommended "Remedy" advice is as follows: "Consumers should immediately stop using the recalled angled adapters and contact CableMod for instructions on how to safely remove their adapter from the GPU and for a full refund, including cost of shipping, or a $60 store credit for non-customized products, with free standard shipping. Consumers will be asked to destroy the adapter and upload a photo of the destroyed product to cablemod.com/adapterrecall/. The instructions on how to safely remove the adapter are also located on that site. Once destroyed, consumers should discard the adapter in accordance with local laws." The Safety Commission has gathered some customer feedback intelligence on this matter: "The firm (CableMod Ltd., of China) has received 272 reports of the adapters becoming loose, overheating and melting into the GPU, with at least $74,500 in property damage claims in the United States. No injuries have been reported."

UGREEN Power Adapters and Fast Chargers at CES 2024

We already snapped UGREEN''s frankly unexpected debut of its NASync family of home and SMB NAS servers, earlier this week. Today we take a closer look at its power adapters and fast chargers. We begin our tour with the UGREEN Home EV Charging Station. This is simply an adapter that converts 3-phase 240 V domestic power to a Type-1 (JI772) AC-only socket, with a connecting cable. The adapter is capable of delivering 240 V AC at 32 A, or roughly 7 kVA. Its main function, though is access control. You unlock power using an RFID access keycard, or an app, using an NFC/Bluetooth capable smartphone. This device is hence targeted at large apartment blocks with multi-level car parks, with each parking slot having one of these.

Next up, is the Nexode RG GaN 65 W wall charger, which puts out a couple of USB-C ports, and a type-A port. One of the type-C can deliver 65 W continuous, the other one up to 30 W, and the type-A maxes out at 22.5 W. The total switching capacity is 65 W, if you plug in multiple devices, they're shared accordingly. One of its surfaces has an LED segment display that has some cool retro graphics, and monitoring. There are also a couple of UGREEN DigiNest series power strips. The S780 plugs into a single AC wall mount, puts out two downstream AC plugs, and contains a 200 W GaN based DC fast charger that drives four type-C and one type-A. One of these put out 140 W, the other 100 W, the third one 65 W, and the rest 22.5 W. The CD270 is a more compacted version of this, with just 100 W switching capacity, and one of its type-C ports delivering 100 W. Lastly, there were also a handful power banks from UGREEN, including a 25 Ah space-saving bank that can put out 140 W, and a 20 Ah bank that has 145 W PD and a wireless charging surface,

8-pin PCIe to ATX 12VHPWR Adapter Included with RTX 40-series Graphics Cards Has a Limited Service-Life of 30 Connect-Disconnect Cycles

PSUs with native 12+4 pin ATX 12VHPWR connectors are few and far between, which means some of the first adopters of the GeForce RTX 4090 "Ada" graphics cards will rely on the adapter cable that converts 8-pin PCIe power connectors into one 12VHPWR connector that plugs into the graphics card. Cards that stick to the baseline specs include adapters that convert three 8-pin PCIe connectors (for 450 W output that matches the RTX 4090 reference specs); whereas some premium overclocked RTX 4090 cards, such as the ZOTAC RTX 4090 AMP Extreme, include adapters that convert as many as four 8-pin PCIe to a 12VHPWR, maxing out its 600 W power delivery capability. The product page of the ZOTAC AMP Extreme has an interesting sentence describing this in-box adapter: "Limited service life with up to 30 connect / disconnects."

Apparently the adapter is only good for up to 30 connect/disconnect cycles safely, before you'll need another one. For most gamers who'll install the card and forget about it for years, this shouldn't be an issue. However, for overclockers and enthusiasts using the card on an open-air bench and who rely on a lot of moving cards around, this could be an irritant. Tech journalists (reviewers) swap graphics cards out a lot, too, but then they're likely to have several such adapters lying around from multiple samples, or a PSU with a native 12+4 pin connector.
