ASUS is bringing its higher-performing Raspberry Pi 3 competitor, the "Tinker Board" to markets in North America. Priced at a nice easy 54.99, ASUS touts the machines horsepower as being nearly double that of a Raspberry Pi 3 and says it is "capable of powering all of your projects from robots to media boxes to coding machine for budding programmers."

The machine's specifications are certainly more capable than a Raspberry Pi 3, and being it is Linux based there will certainly be a plethora of community support for this device. Interestingly enough, Android Support is a bit behind (being only on Marshmallow at the moment), but ASUS has a pledge for Nougat support in place.

The floodgates have opened on AMD's recently-launched RX 500 series, which features a more polished, revised, 3rd-gen 14 nm FinFet process. Graphics cards based on the new GPUs will, as such, feature higher clocks than their RX 400 series counterparts, even if the number of graphics processing resources remains relatively unchanged. New processor launches are closely followed by clock-speed and benchmark records, and that applies to even AMD's Ryzen 5 1600X six-core processor. Professional overclocker Der8auer succeeded in overclocking the chip to 5905.64 MHz without having to disable any cores. The feat was possible due to liquid nitrogen (LN2) cooling. The clock was made possibly by running the chip with a base-clock of 129.79 MHz, and a multiplier of 45.5X. The core-voltage is unclear. The processor was paired with an ASUS Crosshair VI Hero motherboard, and G.Skill Trident Z memory.

ASUS introduced the GeForce GTX 1060 3 GB Phoenix graphics card. Designed with low cost in mind, this card is 18.3 cm long, and combines a custom-design PCB that draws power from a single 6-pin PCIe power connector, with a simple monolithic aluminium fan-heatsink cooler. The heatsink features a copper core, which dissipates heat to an aluminium block with spirally projecting fins; which is ventilated by a single 80 mm dual ball bearing fan. The GPU is clocked at NVIDIA reference speeds of 1506 MHz core, 1708 MHz GPU Boost, and 8.00 GHz (GDDR5-effective) memory. As the 3 GB variant of the GTX 1060, the chip features just 1,152 CUDA cores. Display outputs include two each of DisplayPort and HDMI connectors, and a DVI port. ASUS didn't reveal pricing.

It looks like AMD Radeon RX 500 series SKUs, such as the RX 580, RX 570, and RX 550, will launch later this month after all, with various ASUS and Sapphire branded SKUs getting listed on popular online stores. While predictably, these SKUs are overpriced on account of pre-launch orders, these are widely expected to be re-brands of the RX 480, RX 470, and RX 460, with slightly higher reference clock speeds, and improved power delivery.

ASUS is readying at least six SKUs based on this series, including two RX 580 8 GB STRIX models, two RX 570 4 GB STRIX models, and two RX 550 SKUs with 4 GB and 2 GB memory amounts. ASUS at a media event, unveiled its latest GeForce GTX 1080 Ti ROG Poseidon graphics card. The company's pioneering Poseidon series graphics cards are characterized by air+liquid hybrid cooling solutions that both work as conventional air-cooled graphics cards, or can be plumbed to a liquid-cooling loop to vastly improve cooling performance. With the GTX 1080 Ti Poseidon, ASUS innovated a new DirectCU H2O technology that passes a copper coolant tube directly over the cooler's base, besides a copper base-plate, which conveys heat to an aluminium fin-stack. The air-cooling component of the ASUS GTX 1080 Ti Poseidon features a dense aluminium fin-stack heatsink ventilated by a pair of IP5X-Certified fans. The company did not reveal clock-speeds, pricing, or availability information.

ASUS has released BIOS updates for its 200-series motherboards (for the Z270, H270, Q270 and B250 chipsets) that brings full official support and compatibility with Intel's Optane products, such as the recently-released cache SSD.

These first Optane drives use the M.2 form factor, and are designed to be used as ultra-fast caching drives for slower, HDD-class storage - a case of having your cake and eating it too, looking to ally the speed benefits of an SSD with the capacious storage space of traditional plater-based storage. Intel says an Optane-cached 1TB hard disk (at 7,200 rpm) will become twice as responsive when performing daily computing tasks or booting up, and can reduce the time it takes for a game to launch (or level to load) by around the 65% mark. A pure SSD solution will always be faster - and usually more predictable - than the Optane-cached HDD, but Intel's Optane solutions offer a tempting option in terms of a cost-effective speed boost (a 16GB module goes for around $44.)

ASUS today introduced revised versions of its GeForce GTX 1080 (non-Ti) STRIX and 6 GB GTX 1060 STRIX OC Edition graphics cards, featuring faster memory, as promised by NVIDIA during its GTX 1080 Ti launch. The GTX 1080 STRIX OC now comes with 11 Gbps GDDR5X memory and the 6 GB GTX 1060 STRIX OC with 9 Gbps GDDR5. To avoid bait-and-switch complaints from the retail market, these cards are clearly designated from their 10 Gbps and 8 Gbps siblings, in the model numbers, and in the prominent GPU SKU branding. The GTX 1080 STRIX OC is labelled "ROG-STRIX-GTX1080-O8G-11GBPS," and the GTX 1060 6 GB STRIX OC "GTX1060-O6G-9GBPS."

The two cards use revised GDDR5X and GDDR5 memory chips that can sustain their memory chips thanks to improvements in the memory controller end by NVIDIA. At 11 Gbps, the GTX 1080 now has a memory bandwidth of 352 GB/s, while the GTX 1060 has 216 GB/s bandwidth with 9 Gbps memory over its 192-bit wide memory bus. The new GTX 1080 STRIX OC also comes with "max-contact" heatsink base the company introduced with its GTX 1080 Ti STRIX. The company didn't reveal pricing.

ASUS introduced the VG245Q, a 24-inch gaming-grade monitor targeting a sub-$250 price point. This monitor comes with 1 ms response time (GTG), and support for AMD FreeSync technology. Under the hood is a TN-film panel with Full HD (1920 x 1080 pixels) resolution, 250 cd/m² maximum brightness, 170°/160° viewing angles (H/V), and flicker-free LED brightness adjustment. The monitor comes with display presets optimized for the various genres of gaming (racing sims, RTS, RPG, FPS, etc). Inputs include one DisplayPort 1.2a (required for FreeSync), two HDMI 1.4a, and one D-Sub.

Ahead of its launch, specifications of the GeForce GTX 1080 Ti STRIX graphics card by ASUS, appeared on the web thanks to a leaked press-deck. The one spec on most people's minds is the factory-overclock. Out of the box, in the so-called "gaming mode," the card is clocked at 1569 MHz core, 1683 MHz GPU Boost, and an untouched 11 GHz (GDDR5X-effective) memory. The "OC Mode," a clock-speed preset that you activate with the included GPUTweak II software, runs the card at 1594 MHz core, 1708 MHz GPU Boost, and 11.1 GHz memory.

It turns out that the DirectCU III cooler deployed on the GTX 1080 Ti STRIX is indeed beefier than the one found on the GTX 1080 and GTX 1070 STRIX cards; with ASUS claiming up to 30% lower temperatures, thanks to a 40% increase in surface area of the heatsink. ASUS took advantage of the heavier heatsink to lower fan-noise, which it claims to be significantly lower than the reference-design card. The company is also using a newer thermal interface material (TIM) called "MaxContact," which due to its particle density, can get up to 10 times flatter than conventional TIMs, for lower thermal resistance posed by the TIM, and higher conductivity. Display outputs of this card include two each of HDMI 2.0b and DisplayPort 1.4 ports.

Besides the NVIDIA reference-design $699-ish GeForce GTX 1080 Ti, which doesn't come with a $100 Founders Edition sucker-tax, ASUS is giving final touches to at least two custom-design models, the GTX 1080 Ti ROG STRIX, and the GTX 1080 Ti Turbo, pictured in a leaked press image, below. The GTX 1080 Ti Turbo is positioned to be the more affordable of the two, and it won't surprise us if ASUS prices it cheaper than even its reference-design SKU. The card features a lateral-flow cooling solution strapped onto a PCB that closely resembles the reference-design.

Next up, is the company's Republic of Gamers (ROG) STRIX card, which could likely come in two variants, an OC variant with factory-overclocked speeds, and a standard variant that either ticks at reference speeds, or close-to-reference speeds. These cards feature a beefier variant of the DirectCU III cooling solution the company launched with its GTX 1080 STRIX cards, which comes with ASUS Aura Sync RGB LED lighting. The cooler will be mated to a custom-design PCB with a strong VRM, multiple case fan-headers (yes, case fan headers), and preparation for front-panel VR HMD connectivity.

As the world's number one PC motherboard manufacturer by volume, it would be a shame if ASUS didn't pander to the budding engineers and electronics hobbyists among you with a product that rivals the Raspberry Pi and Intel Edison. That product is the TinkerBoard, a card-sized single-board computer with a ton of I/O, including support for 4K Ultra HD displays. At the heart of this board is a Rockchip RK3288 SoC, which embeds a 32-bit quad-core ARM Cortex-A17 CPU, and a Mali T764 GPU. This chip is topped off by 2 GB of dual-channel memory. The most prominent Raspberry Pi competitor to this board is the Pi 3 Model B, with its 64-bit Broadcom BCM2837 chip, and a starting price of just $35.

Other features of the TinkerBoard include a GPIO that rivals Raspberry Pi, 4K Ultra HD H.264 video decode capability, gigabit Ethernet, SDIO 3.0, 24-bit/192 kHz HD audio, and a swappable antenna for its 802.11 b/g/n WLAN. While the specifications check out well in favor of the TinkerBoard, it all comes down to pricing. Hobbyists working on robotics projects, for example, purchase Raspberries Pi by the dozens thanks to their low price. ASUS should do well to keep that in mind when pricing this board.

After announcing it on mid-2016, ASUS is finally coming through with its announcement of a unique take on the widescreen monitor department. Dubbed the Designo Curve, the MX34QV stays true to the design implied in its name, presenting an interesting mix of straight lines and a nicely curved, organic base, which incidentally supports wireless Qi charging. I find the aesthetics on this monitor pleasing and subdued, even though some liberties have been taken with that exquisite Qi charging base, which lights up in a cool blue lighting.

ASUS today unveiled the Z270-WS socket LGA1151 motherboard targeted at DIY workstation builds. Based on the Intel Z270 Express chipset, the board supports 7th generation Core "Kaby Lake" processors. What sets this board apart from most of the company's Z270 motherboard lineup is its PLX PEX8747 PCI-Express 3.0 x48 bridge chip. The board features a 12-phase CPU VRM with server-grade electrical components. The CPU socket is wired to four DDR4 DIMM slots, and three PCI-Express 3.0 x16 slots over the bridge chip (x16/NC/x16 or x16/x8/x8). The fourth x16 slot is electrical x4 and wired to the PCH.
