VESA Updates Adaptive-Sync Display Standard with New Dual-Mode Support

The Video Electronics Standards Association (VESA) today announced that it has published an update to its Adaptive-Sync Display Compliance Test Specification (Adaptive-Sync Display CTS), which is the first publicly open standard for front-of-screen performance of variable refresh rate displays. Adaptive-Sync Display version 1.1a provides updated testing procedures and logo support for an emerging category of displays that can operate at different maximum refresh rates when resolution is reduced. This optional "Dual Mode" testing and logo support allows display OEMs with qualifying hardware to certify their products at two different sets of resolution and refresh rate (for example, 4K/144 Hz and 1080p/280 Hz).

Adaptive-Sync Display v1.1a also includes an update that allows display OEMs to achieve a higher AdaptiveSync Display refresh rate certification for displays that support an "overclocked" or faster mode option that is not enabled by default in the factory configuration. In such cases, the overclocked mode must support Adaptive-Sync-enabled GPUs in a non-proprietary manner, and the display must pass all of the rigorous Adaptive-Sync Display compliance tests in both its factory default mode, and completely retested a second time in the overclocking mode. Both the dual mode and overclocking changes to the Adaptive-Sync Display CTS v1.1a only apply to the VESA Certified AdaptiveSync Display logo program; they do not apply to the VESA Certified MediaSync Display logo program. To date, more than 100 products have been certified to the Adaptive-Sync Display standard. A complete list of Adaptive-Sync Display certified products can be found at https://www.adaptivesync.org/certified-products/.

ASUS Intros Radeon RX 7800 XT and RX 7700 XT Dual OC Graphics Cards

ASUS updated its AMD Radeon graphics card lineup with the introduction of the Radeon RX 7800 XT Dual OC and RX 7700 XT Dual OC. This is an interesting development, given that the company only had TUF Gaming series custom-designs of the two GPUs at their early September 2023 launch. The company continues to lack any ROG Strix series products based on the RX 7800 XT, RX 7700 XT, and the RX 7900 series. The two new Dual OC series cards are positioned below the TUF Gaming products, and predictably, share a common board design for the RX 7800 XT Dual OC and the RX 7700 XT Dual OC.

The new Dual OC common board for the RX 7800 XT and RX 7700 XT is just about 2 slots thick (or 2.2 slots to be specific). It is 27.9 cm long, and 13.39 cm tall, or about an inch taller than what constitutes "full height." Its cooler features an aluminium fin-stack heatsink that's ventilated by two 100 mm Axial Tech fans backed by dual ball bearings, webbed impellers, and idle fan-stop. The card draws power from two 8-pin PCIe power connectors. With its OC Mode enabled (via software), the RX 7800 XT Dual OC offers a Game clock of 2254 MHz and 2565 MHz Boost clock (vs. 2124/2430 MHz reference). The RX 7700 XT Dual OC, on the other hand, offers 2239 MHz Game clock and 2599 MHz Boost clock with its OC Mode enabled (vs. 2171/2544 MHz reference). The company didn't reveal pricing.

ASUS Intros China-exclusive Radeon RX 7900 GRE TUF White

ASUS over the weekend introduced the China-exclusive Radeon RX 7900 GRE TUF Gaming White graphics card. The card shares a lot in common with the other RX 7900 series TUF Gaming custom-design cards, but swaps out the gunmetal-gray cooler shroud and backplate combo for one that's matte white. The whitewash even extends to the impellers of the three Axial Tech fans. The PCB remains black, but due to the 3-D design of the shroud and backplate, is largely concealed. The card draws power from a pair of 8-pin PCIe power connectors, and uses a 14-phase VRM to condition it for the "Navi 31 XL" ASIC.

The Radeon RX 7900 GRE (golden rabbit edition) is based on a "Navi 31 XL," a unique package that combines the 5 nm graphics compute die (GCD) of "Navi 31," with the 4-MCD (memory cache die) setup of the smaller "Navi 32" package. AMD designed this primarily to drive the mobile RX 7900 series SKUs, but it found its way to the desktop platform to fill the gap between the RX 7800 XT and RX 7900 XT, and possibly undercut the GeForce RTX 4070 Ti. It is configured with 80 out of 96 available compute units on the GCD, giving it 5,120 stream processors, 160 AI accelerators, and 80 Ray accelerators, the Infinity Cache size is reduced to 64 MB, since there are only 4 MCDs, driving its 256-bit memory bus that handles 16 GB of 18 Gbps GDDR6 memory (576 GB/s bandwidth).

ASUS Teases 4K 240 Hz ROG Gaming Monitor with 1080p 480 Hz Mode

Just like LG and HP, ASUS is gearing up to launch a dual mode 4K 240 Hz / 1080p 480 Hz OLED monitor and the company has released a little teaser ahead of the official CES 2024 reveal of the monitor. The display will unsurprisingly fall under ASUS' ROG brand and will be known as the ROG Swift OLED PG32UCDP and spec wise it appears to use the same OLED panel as LG's 32GS95UE and possibly HP's Omen Transcend, since all three monitors should feature the dual mode option of 4K 240 Hz or 1080p 480 Hz. ASUS claims that the PG32UCDP is "the world's first dual-mode gaming monitor" which we've already seen isn't the case, but it's still the matter of who will be first to offer their displays in the retail market.

Interestingly, ASUS announced the similar ROG Swift OLED PG32UCDM at Gamescom 2023, which was said to offer a QD-OLED display with a 4K resolution and a 240 Hz refresh rate. The PG32UCDM appears to lack the 1080p 480 Hz mode though, but with only one letter difference in the model name, potential buyers are going to have to pay close attention so they don't end up with the wrong display. We're going to have to wait for a release and review of the displays before we'll know which one is the better of the two ASUS models.

With subtle and graceful aesthetics that add a touch of refinement to your setup, the ProArt LC 420 is cool, quiet and classy - the perfect trifecta for any and all content creators.

Premium performance
As one of the few 420 mm AIO coolers on the market, the ProArt LC 420 can deliver some of the most powerful cooling available. And with its three renowned Noctua NF-A14 industrial PPC-2000 PWM 140 mm radiator fans, airflow can be delivered quietly. The synergy of high performance and low noise extends to many other elements of the ProArt LC 420. A premium three-phase motor pump ensures a smooth and steady transfer of heat to the radiator, while being acoustically tuned to blend into the background. And the radiator itself is thicker than usual, creating extra coolant storage so that the fans and motor do not have to work as hard.

Graph Provides Valuable Insights to Ryzen User Upgrade Patterns Based on AMD Chipset Sales Share

Market research by Korean publication Danawa DPG provides valuable insights to how desktop AMD Ryzen processor users are charting their upgrade paths given the long upgrade longevity of AMD sockets. The research follows a 10-month date range from December 2022 to October 2023, and tracks the sales of motherboards based on various AMD chipset models. We're shown that toward the turn of the year, AMD B550 chipset motherboards sell the most. This is when AMD Ryzen 5000 Socket AM4 processors top sales for the company, Given that the B550 fully supports CPU overclocking, and that there are plenty of feature-packed B550 motherboard models, it explains why the B550 covers a wide price-band.

AMD launched the Ryzen 7000 series "Zen 4" to lukewarm response in September 2022, mainly because the platform lacked DDR4 memory support that was relevant at the time, and hence wasn't as flexible to consumers as Intel's LGA1700. Its launch caused price-cuts for Ryzen 5000 series processors, clearing out some upgrade headroom for those on the AM4 platform still using Ryzen 3000. Off to a slow start, we see its successor from Socket AM5, the B650 chipset, rise steadily over the time period, and for two reasons—DDR5 memory became affordable over the course of 2023; and AMD breathed life into the Ryzen 7000 series with the introduction of the Ryzen 7000X3D series, which restored gaming performance competitiveness to Intel's 13th Gen Core "Raptor Lake." The B650 has everything you need right now for a Ryzen 7000X3D build, given that both the GeForce RTX 40-series and Radeon RX 7000 series are PCIe Gen 4 graphics cards; and that the B650 has at least a Gen 5 NVMe slot. If you absolutely need a Gen 5 x16 slot, there's the premium B650E chipset to go with.

ASUS Intros GeForce RTX 4070 Turbo Graphics Card with Lateral Flow Cooler

ASUS introduced the GeForce RTX 4070 Turbo, a performance segment graphics card with a lateral blower-type cooling solution that should make it ideal for restrictive airflow environments (such as a stack of them in an AI processing box). The card is strictly 2 slots thick, no taller than what constitutes full-height for addon cards (11.1 cm), and is 26.9 cm long. It lacks a backplate, so it could give a little more breathing room to its neighboring card. Its sole power connector, an 8-pin PCIe, is located at the tail end of the card, instead of the top, for additional clearance.

Internally, the ASUS Turbo RTX 4070 cooling solution features a copper base-plate, which conveys heat to an aluminium channel stack that's ventilated by a lateral blower. ASUS has given this blower a high endurance dual ball-bearing. The RTX 4070 GPU at the heart of the card runs at NVIDIA reference specs, with a 2475 MHz boost frequency, and a 21 Gbps GDDR6X memory speed. It features 12 GB of it across a 192-bit memory bus. There are two SMD switches on the card, the "Turbo" switch overrides software fan control and holds the fan on a steep fan-curve, hitting 100% even; while the VM_SW switch toggles between a "Quiet" and "Performance" mode, we don't know if this uses a dual-BIOS mechanism, or is a physical toggle for ASUS GPU Tweak software. ASUS didn't release pricing information.

Chinese Loongson 3A6000 CPU Matches Intel "Raptor Lake" IPC

The Chinese chipmaker Loongson has launched its newest desktop processors, the 4-core, 8-thread 3A6000 series, based on the company's LoongArch microarchitecture. We have previously reported that the company wants to match Intel's "Willow Cove" and AMD's Zen 3 instruction per clock (IPC) levels with its 3A6000 CPU series, and today we have the first preview of the performance. Powered by the LA664 cores, 3A6000 is built on a 14/12 nm manufacturing process, with clock speeds going from 2.0 to 2.5 GHz and power consumption of up to 50 Watts. It features 256 KB of L2 cache and 16 MB of L3 cache in total.

While several hardware partners are announcing new Loongson-powered solutions, ASUS China's "Uncle Tony" managed to get his hands on one of them and overclocker the CPU to 2.63 GHz on air cooling. In overclocking tests using liquid nitrogen cooling, a 3A6000 processor reached 3.0 GHz, though there are indications that there is still overhead. In standard out-of-the-box configuration, the 3A6000 performs similarly to Intel's Core i3-10100 four-core CPU, an achievement for Loongson but still behind Intel's latest offerings that clock nearly twice as high. This rapid development of Loongson IP has led to a massive performance increase, matching the IPC of modern CPUs. We are still left to see more information about these 3A6000 series SKUs; however, early benchmarks suggest a significant improvement. You can see the CPU benchmarks below, which include UnixBench and SPEC CPU 2006.

Intel Core Ultra 7 155H iGPU Outperforms AMD Radeon 780M, Comes Close to Desktop Intel Arc A380

Intel is slowly preparing to launch its next-generation Meteor Lake mobile processor family, dropping the Core i brand name in favor of Core Ultra. Today, we are witnessing some early Geekbench v6 benchmarks with the latest leak of the Core Ultra 7 155H processor, boasting an integrated Arc GPU featuring 8 Xe-Cores—the complete configuration expected in the GPU tile. This tile is also projected to be a part of the more potent Core 9 Ultra 185H CPU. The Intel Core Ultra 7 155H processor has been benchmarked in the new ASUS Zenbook 14, which houses a 16-core and 22-thread hybrid CPU configuration capable of boosting up to 4.8 GHz. Paired with 32 GB of memory, the configuration was well equipped to supply CPU and GPU with sufficient memory space.

Perhaps the most interesting information from the submission was the OpenCL score of the GPU. Clocking in at 33948 points in Geekbench v6, the GPU is running over AMD's Radeon 780M GPU found in APU solutions like AMD Ryzen 9 7940HS and Ryzen 9 7940U, which scored 30585 and 27345 points in the same benchmark, respectively. The GPU tile is millimeters away from closing the gap between itself and the desktop Intel Arc A380 discrete GPU, which scored 37105 points for less than a 10% difference. The Xe-LPG GPU version is bringing some interesting performance points for the integrated GPU platform, which means that Intel's Meteor Lake SKUs will bring more performance/watt than ever.

Lenovo Files Patent Infringement Action Against ASUS with the US ITC

Lenovo (United States) Inc., part of the global technology corporation, Lenovo Group, filed a patent infringement action on November 15th with the United States International Trade Commission (ITC) against ASUSTeK Computer Inc. and ASUS Computer International (ASUS) for infringement of a variety of Lenovo's patents related to software, hardware, and connectivity across multiple ASUS products. The action is in response to ASUS's August 2023 filings in the Regional Court of Munich related to cellular technologies, where Lenovo had offered a cross-licensing deal as a solution.

Lenovo is a strong proponent of cross-licensing agreements, open and transparent negotiations, and licensing within the industry on fair, reasonable, and non-discriminatory (FRAND) terms. This is evidenced by the Group's ongoing litigation with InterDigital, where it advocated for greater transparency and less discrimination in licensing negotiations and was proven by the UK Court to be a willing licensee. The action against ASUSTeK reflects the Group's commitment to protecting its significant contributions to technology innovation and industry "firsts" over the past 39 years, building a portfolio of over 28,000 patents with a further 14,000 applications pending.
