Intel unveils upcoming "Tunnel Creek" System-on-Chip (SoC) for IP phones, printers and in-vehicle-infotainment systems for cars. Two Intel executives today outlined the latest Intel system-on-chip (SoC) products for embedded applications and described new research to allow homes and small businesses to better use and manage energy. The forthcoming SoC product features an Intel Atom processor core that, for the first time, will let other companies create PCI Express-compliant devices that directly connect to the chip, which offers new flexibility for embedded applications.

Intel also highlighted work with HawTai, a major Chinese car maker that plans to use Intel Atom processors and MeeGo software for their in-car infotainment systems. In addition, China Mobile, the world's largest wireless telecommunications company, will adopt Intel chips for targeted platforms powering its wireless networks.

The halting of production of Acer's ultra-thin notebooks, and disappointing sales from all notebook manufacturers for this market segment has prompted Intel to wait until the third quarter to release its new line of Atom processors. Sources interviewed by DigiTimes hint that the release date may be pushed back even further if demand is not high enough by Q3. Notebook manufactures say that ultra-thin notebooks accounted for only 10-15% of their sales for 2009 instead of the predicted 20-30%.

Zotac is working on five new MAG nettops under its ZBOX series. Each of these "anywhere PCs" measure 18.8 (L) x 18.8 (W) x 4.4 (D) cm, and offer enough power for basic computing. The five new models are based on a variety of nettop platforms. As standard features, these have 160 GB HDDs, SDHC card reader, USB 2.0 and eSATA, Gigabit Ethernet and WiFi. Intel is set to announce an addition to its new single-core Atom series, with the Atom N470. The new chip falls in the same lineup as the Atom N450 (single-core), and targets netbooks. It features a single core with HyperThreading, on-die single-channel memory controller that supports DDR2-667 MHz memory, on-die graphics, and is built on the 45 nm manufacturing process. The processor core 512 KB of L2 cache. Compared to the N450 which operates at 1.66 GHz, the N470 runs at 1.83 GHz. It features Intel Graphics Media Accelerator (GMA) 3150 for basic display functionality at resolutions of up to 1366 x 768 pixels. The new chip is expected to be launched on March 1. One of the first netbooks that use it is Lenovo's IdeaPad S10-3t.

Zotac is trying out a new nettop design which makes use of discrete NVIDIA GT218 graphics processor with the second generation Atom platform (codenamed Pinetrail). By design, the Intel NM10 chipset which drives the new processor does not give out a PCI-Express x16 link, which leaves a lot to be learned about how Zotac goes about putting its ideas in motion. The company has displayed a non-functional prototype at this year's CES. The discrete graphics will give the nettop sufficient power to display 1080p graphics (which the platform can't, without an external HD video decoder). Zotac may place this as a successor to its MAG series nettops.

QNAP has made a name for themselves with their previous NAS devices, which made use of the Intel Atom processor, but the newest revision of their units with 2, 4, 6 or 8 storage bays now runs on the Pinetrail Atom D510 and also features VMware and iSCSI support. DFI has announced a new mini-ITX form factor motherboard in the LR100-N16M which offers low power consumption, higher-performance, and fanless cooling. This board utilizes the latest two-chip Intel Atom processor N450 and Intel 82801HM I/O Controller (also referred to as "ICH8M") system solution. This smaller integrated two-chip platform uses approximately 40% less board space than previous generation three-chip solutions, and provides higher performance per watt than any previous Intel Atom processor-based platform.

The LR100-N16M mini-ITX motherboard is equipped with a 45nm Hi-K technology Intel Atom processor N450 with 5.5W TDP, 667MHz front side bus (FSB) and 1.67GHz core frequency.
