BIOSTAR Launches the Newest AMD Radeon RX5700XT and RX5700 Graphics Cards

BIOSTAR, a leading manufacturer of motherboards, graphics cards, and storage devices, welcomes the arrival of PCI Express 4.0 with the AMD Radeon RX5700-series of graphics cards, the world's first graphics cards to support the 4th generation PCI Express interface. BIOSTAR is proudly launching its first Radeon RX5700-series cards, namely the Radeon RX5700XT and Radeon RX5700. Beyond gaining twice the PCI-E bandwidth compared to previous generations of graphics cards, the Radeon RX5700-series also features the first mass market 7nm GPU. It's also AMD's first GPU based on their brand new RDNA architecture. Another first is support for GDDR6 memory, which offers twice the peak bandwidth compared to GDDR5.

AMD's RDNA architecture is a completely new GPU design that brings a wide range of new features to the Radeon RX5700-series, such as a streamlined graphics pipeline, a brand new compute unit design and a multilevel cache hierarchy. Together, things bring a 50% performance per Watt advantage over AMD's previous GCN architecture.

BIOSTAR Racing X570GT8 Pictured

We got a closer look at the Racing X570GT8 from BIOSTAR. This board was already leaked to the web earlier this month. Right off the bat we see an understated design with a predictable layout. The board draws power from a combination of 24-pin ATX, 8-pin EPS, and 4-pin ATX power connectors, and uses a 12-phase VRM design. Expansion slots include two PCI-Express 4.0 x16, a third gen 4.0 x16 (electrical gen 4.0 x4), and three other gen 4.0 x1 slots. Storage connectivity includes three M.2 NVMe 64 Gbps slots. Overclocker-friendly features include POST code readout, onboard buttons, and USB BIOS Flashback. The board's sole 1 GbE interface is driven by an Intel i211-AT controller. The onboard audio solution is powered by an ALC1220 CODEC. Expect this board to be priced around $170.

BIOSTAR Racing X570GT8 Zen 2 Motherboard Pictured and Detailed

MSI, without naming its product, teased its MEG X570 Ace motherboard late last week, obeying the cardinal rules of a teaser, such as not putting out clear pictures or names. BIOSTAR probably wanted to do something similar, but ended up leaking glaring details and pictures of its flagship socket AM4 motherboard based on the AMD X570 chipset, the Racing X570GT8. The X570 is AMD's first in-house design chipset for the AM4 socket after "Promontory" and FM2-based "Bolton," supplied by ASMedia. It was necessitated by the need to get downstream PCIe connectivity from the chipset to be certified for the latest generations (gen 3.0 or later), by AMD, and overcome many of the connectivity limitations of ASMedia "Promontory," from which AMD carved out previous socket AM4 chipsets.

Design compulsions of being a flagship product aside, there are signs of a clear focus on strengthening the CPU VRM on the Racing X570GT8, to cope with the rumored Ryzen 9 series 16-core "Zen 2" processor. The board draws power from a combination of 24-pin ATX and 8+4 pin EPS connectors, conditioning it for the processor with a 12-phase VRM. There are two metal-reinforced PCI-Express x16 slots wired to the AM4 SoC, and we get the first glimpse of the PCI-Express gen 4.0 lane switching and re-driver circuitry. We haven't seen anything to suggest that the downstream PCIe lanes from the X570 chipset are gen 4.0, yet, but we expect them to at least be gen 3.0. The presence of three M.2 slots bodes well for the downstream PCIe lane count. ASMedia "Promontory" puts out a paltry eight gen 2.0 lanes. It's also interesting to see an active fan-heatsink cooling the X570 chipset, indicating a rather high TDP compared to the 3-5 Watt TDP of the 400-series "Promontory" low-power variant chipsets. The component choices by BIOSTAR look premium and are a callback to its T-Power glory days enthusiasts remember.

BIOSTAR also Shows Non-Mining Motherboards, M500 Series NVMe at COMPUTEX 2018

BIOSTAR at COMPUTEX 2018 also showcased some other bits and pieces of hardware that didn't actually focus on mining. The company's M500 Series M.2 SSD, for example, features relatively high performance (not for an NVMe drive, surely, but against a SATA SSD there's just no competition). The LED indicators are interesting additions, dynamically blinking and giving color-coded information at a glance regarding drive temperature (which may sometimes be relevant in hunting down throttling scenarios), as well as data transmission on the drive itself.

BIOSTAR at COMPUTEX 2018 - Motherboards With a Focus on Mining

At COMPUTEX 2018, we took a detour through BIOSTAR's booth to check exactly what products the company felt like showcasing to the world. The result was a look at the company's (now not so recent) focus on mining products, materialized in their TB-360-BTC Expert motherboard (an H370 motherboard with 16x PCIe 1x slots for graphics card integration via risers). The TB360-BTC+ cuts that number of PCIe 1x ports down to 7, and makes use of Intel's B360 chipset.
