AMD Introduces New Radeon PRO W7900 Dual Slot at Computex 2024

In addition to the new Zen 5 Ryzen 9000 series desktop CPUs and Ryzen AI 300 series mobile CPUs, as well as the new Ryzen 5000XT series AM4 socket desktop CPUs and updates to the AMD Instinct AI GPU roadmap, AMD rather silently announced the new Radeon PRO W7900 Dual Slot workstation graphics card at the Computex 2024. While not a completely new product, as it is just a model update of the currently available flagship Radeon PRO W7900 workstation graphics card, it is still a rather important update since AMD managed to squeeze it into a dual-slot design, which gives it support for multi-GPU setups.

As said, the AMD Radeon PRO W7900 Dual Slot still uses the same Navi 31 GPU with 96 Compute Units (CUs), 96 Ray Accelerators, 192 AI Accelerators, and 6144 Stream Processors, as well as 48 GB of GDDR6 ECC memory on a 384-bit memory interface, giving it maximum memory bandwidth of 864 GB/s. It still needs 2x8-pin PCIe power connectors and has a Total Board Power (TBP) of 295 W. The card still comes with three DisplayPort 2.1 and one Enhanced Mini DisplayPort 1.2 outputs. What makes the new Radeon PRO W7900 Dual Slot special is the fact that AMD managed to get it down to a dual-slot design, even with the same blower-fan cooler. Unfortunately, it is not clear if the fan or its profiles are different, but it does make it suitable to be used in multi-GPU configurations.

NVIDIA Project G-Assist Hands On and Under the Hood

On Sunday, NVIDIA announced Project G-Assist, the AI chatbot for gamers that can be pulled up in the middle of the gameplay, and sought help from. You could just pause your game and Google for help, but G-Assist can be activated in game, and is situationally aware of your game (e.g.: it knows where you're stuck and how to help you out). It won't play the game for you, but give you actionable info on how to play, or improve. For example, you could ask it how to craft a particular weapon, and where to find the items needed in game, and get concise guidance. G-Assist also knows about your graphics card, framerates and other telemetry data.

We went hands-on with G-Assist, and found that it's very capable of doing the things NVIDIA claims it can, short of playing the game for you. They are showing a demo of ARK Survival, but the impressive part is that there's no integration of G-Assist in Ark—rather is runs as an injected overlay that can capture user input. This means that G-Assist can work in ANY game, even without official support. We also learned how G-Assist works under-the-hood, particularly how the chatbot is situationally aware of your game, and it's fascinating.

A Quick Look at NVIDIA SFF-Ready Graphics Cards and Cases

At NVIDIA's Computex 2024 booth, we got a quick look at the enthusiast-segment GeForce RTX 40-series graphics cards and third-party PC cases that qualify for the company's new SFF-Ready market, which aims to incentivize building smaller enthusiast-segment graphics cards for the SFF crowd, and to try and arrest the runaway growth in the sizes of custom-design graphics cards. To qualify, a graphics card must be no larger than 304 mm x 151 mm x 50 mm (length x height x thickness), and for an SFF case to support such a card. Most of these cards and cases are already launched, and we're sure the standard will have some influence on the graphics card partners and case designers as NVIDIA heads towards its future GeForce RTX "Blackwell" generation.

GIGABYTE AI TOP Ecosystem: Generative and Assistive AI Software, New Certified Hardware

GIGABYTE at the 2024 Computex announced the AI TOP ecosystem, a collection of first-party software services and hardware for consumer AI applications. On the software side of things, GIGABYTE announced sets of generative AI tools, and an AI chat assistant. The AI Top Utility is a local AI training utility that supports a wide range of generative AI models, while giving you a bird's eye view of the AI models being trained, and lets you control the system resources being allocated to them. It also provides real-time hardware monitoring of the whole DNN building and training operation.

The GIGABYTE AI TOP Tutor is an AI assistant trained by the company to provide real-time assistance on your hardware and software. New to configuring your hardware or fine-tuning the various software settings, ask the AI TOP Tutor in plain language, and it will assist you. The third piece of the AI puzzle for GIGABYTE is the AI TOP Hardware. This is a collection of PC hardware spanning motherboards, graphics cards, power supplies, chassis, and SSDs, which are certified by GIGABYTE to take on the rigors of AI acceleration.

GIGABYTE Shows Real-Time LCD System Information Display

GIGABYTE debuted its LCD Edge View display for showcasing real-time system information. Designed as a small and compact LCD display, it acts as a desktop-standing box capable of displaying critical system information like CPU and GPU temperatures, fan speeds of GPUs and CPU coolers, PC fans, as well as everything else happening inside of a PC. Interestingly, it isn't just a fixed-function display. It can show custom images/videos and display custom text, serving as a small display companion to the main monitor for users to look at occasionally or just monitor system health. The design of the LCD Edge View is to be a plug-and-play white box that could easily be positioned on any desktop, blending seamlessly with the user's setup.

It requires external power connection, and can be driven by any GPU/video output. It also features a USB port.

GIGABYTE Debuts its Own Backside Connectivity Motherboard Standard: the Stealth

GIGABYTE at the 2024 Computex debuted its own standard of motherboards with backside I/O (i.e. ports and connectors located on the reverse side of the PCB). GIGABYTE is calling this brand extension "Stealth." It rivals ASUS BTF and MSI Project Zero. One of the first products to implement it is an AMD Socket AM5 motherboard, the B650E AORUS Stealth Ice. Besides backside connectors, a large shroud dominates the board in such a way that only the CPU cooler, memory, and the graphics card stick out. GIGABYTE is claiming bragging rights to this being the world's first white PCB motherboard with backside connectivity (BSC). Given that most case manufacturers are getting friendly with BSC, and are carving out huge cutouts in their motherboard trays for broad compatibility with all proprietary BSC standards, the GIGABYTE Stealth should be generally compatible with these cases.

GIGABYTE Debuts "AI TOP" Line of Motherboards and GPUs Designed for Local AI Development

During Computex 2024, GIGABYTE unveiled its new "AI TOP" series designed to empower users to develop and run AI applications locally on their systems. The AI TOP lineup includes AI-optimized motherboards, graphics cards, and complete system solutions. The flagship motherboard is called TRX50 AI TOP, which boasts support for AMD's Ryzen Threadripper 7000 PRO and a regular series of CPUs. The flagship TRX50 AI TOP motherboard features a special VRM design with beefy heatsinks, four PCIe 5.0 x16 slots for quad-GPU setup, eight-channel DDR5 memory with room for eight DIMMs, and a few M.2 PCIe Gen 5 slots. Next in the AI TOP line is the GIGABYTE GeForce RTX 4070 Ti SUPER AI TOP edition. Formed as a blower-style cooler, the RTX 4070 Ti SUPER AI TOP is envisioned for tight spaces and parallel installation with other GPUs to accelerate local AI development and inference.

Supposedly, there will be more AI TOP motherboards and GPUs than what is showcased. GIGABYTE may have an AI TOP makeover for Intel's upcoming Z890 AORUS Xtreme, and there could be more GPUs in the future with the blower-style AI TOP design. The goal of AI TOP series is optimization for AI workloads, which require lots of GPUs and lots of memory, like the TRX50 AI TOP motherboard shows.

GIGABYTE Showcases Intel Z890 Arrow Lake and AMD X870E Zen 5 Motherboards

GIGABYTE in its Computex 2027 booth showcased a huge lineup of next-generation Socket LGA1851 motherboards based on the top Intel Z890 chipset, which are ready for Intel's Core Ultra "Arrow Lake-S" desktop processors. GIGABYTE has taped out the motherboard model names, so all mentions of Z890 in this article are based on our assumption that it's the name of the next-gen Intel chipset. These chips are expected to bring generational IPC increases from their "Lion Cove" P-cores, "Skymont" E-cores, a more complete PCIe Gen 5 I/O (including for the CPU-attached NVMe slots), and other innovations. If the socket looks similar to the LGA1700, it's because it's identical in physical dimensions, and you can use your LGA1700 cooler on the LGA1851, but the processors are not inter-compatible. The company also showcased a few AMD Socket AM5 motherboards based on the new AMD X870E chipset.

The first motherboard to catch our eye is the Z890 AORUS Tachyon. This board is geared for record-seeking CPU overclocking. The processor is wired to just two DDR5 memory slots (1 DIMM per channel, the best configuration for memory OC); and the CPU-attached NVMe slots being close to the socket, with a combined heatsink. The only expansion slots are a PCI-Express 5.0 x16, and what could be a Gen 4 x8. There are plenty of overclocker-friendly controls, voltage measurement points, diagnostic LEDs, and status displays, scattered all over the board.

GIGABYTE Graphics Cards at Computex: AORUS Xtreme Ice, AI TOP, Eagle OC Ice

GIGABYTE showed off a trio of new or recently announced graphics cards based on the GeForce RTX 40-series GPUs. The lineup is led by the RTX 4080 SUPER AORUS Xtreme Ice, a limited edition, bleeding edge product that the company has serial numbered each card with. The card features some very premium materials in its board design that both look good and are very sturdy. The card also features GIGABYTE's highest factory overclock for the RTX 4080 SUPER.

Next up, is the GeForce RTX 4070 Ti SUPER AI TOP. The company just announced the new AI TOP ecosystem of first-party generative AI tools, AI assistants, and hardware certified to accelerate AI, and this graphics card is one of them. It features a lateral-blower cooling solution. The idea behind this is so you could install many of these cards in a desktop or workstation to build a rendering or acceleration farm. The company also unveiled an AI TOP branded AMD TRX50 workstation motherboard, which should be a perfect pairing for this card. Lastly, there are a few recently announced cards, the RTX 4070 SUPER Eagle OC Ice, and the AMD Radeon RX 7900 XTX Gaming OC.
