Dell To Launch Precision M3800 Mobile Workstation With 3200 x 1800 Display

Dutch site Tweakers.net has reported that Dell is planning to introduce a new Precision series mobile workstation laptop. Dubbed the Precision M3800, this workstation on-the-go will pack a super high resolution display to the tune of 3,200 x 1,800 pixels. Phew, that's a lot of pixels, and all of them will be spread across 15.6-inches of diagonal real estate. Also in tow is a powerful Intel Core i7-4702MQ quad-core Haswell processor, 16 gigs of RAM, option between a 1 TB HDD or 512 GB SSD (hint, pick the SSD) and of course, the 15.6" 3,200 x 1,800 display (which can also be swapped with a 1080p panel... Right!)

The Dell Precision M3800 will reportedly measure just 18mm in thickness (0.7 inches) and weigh less than an average newborn, in just 2KG (about 4.4 pounds). The publication mentions that the starting price of the workstation will be $1,699, but could go up to $1,999 (you got to pay for the pixels). Of course, nothing's official. All we can do is wait for Dell to go official with the device, and hope that the specifications mentioned come true.

EIZO Releases 21" And 19" Square Monitors With LED Backlights

EIZO Corporation today announced the release of one 21.3-inch and two 19-inch square monitors. The 21.3-inch monitor is the FlexScan S2133 and the 19-inch monitors are the FlexScan S1923 and FlexScan S1903. All three monitors come with LED backlights and other energy-saving features making them ideal for large and small offices that require a traditional square design. With its large screen size, the FlexScan S2133 is also suitable for control rooms and CAD (computer-aided design).

All three monitors have LED backlights for low power consumption of 16 watts or less during typical operation and just 0.5 watts in power save mode. They are also easy on the eyes. An ambient brightness sensor called Auto EcoView and a preset mode called Paper mode lower the monitors' brightness and color temperature respectively to reduce the blue light output which can cause eye fatigue.

ASUS Introduces Designo Series MX299Q Ultrawide 21:9 Cinematic Monitor

ASUS announced the Designo Series MX299Q Ultrawide 21:9 Cinematic Monitor, a 29-inch widescreen display with an ultra-wide 21:9 aspect ratio and 2560 x 1080 resolution. The MX299Q features the latest AH-IPS (Advanced High Performance In-Plane Switching) display for rich, vibrant color with 178-degree wide viewing angles, and ASUS SonicMaster audio, co-developed with Bang & Olufsen ICEpower for superlative sound quality with its built-in stereo speakers. It also features an award-winning, simple and elegant sundial-inspired design.

With a display area equivalent to that of two 17-inch (5:4 aspect ratio) monitors placed alongside each other, the ASUS Designo Series MX299Q Ultrawide 21:9 Cinematic Monitor has a display area 33% wider than a similar Full HD monitor. The 21:9 aspect ratio gives more room for working with multiple windows side-by-side, removing the need for a secondary desktop monitor. The ultra-wide 2560 x 1080 resolution also means there are no black bars above and below the image when watching widescreen 2.35:1 movies and gamers can also enjoy games in immersive cinematic widescreen.

Lenovo Overtakes HP as the Top PC Vendor While U.S. Shipments Stabilize: IDC

Worldwide PC shipments totaled 75.6 million units in the second quarter of 2013 (2Q13), down -11.4% compared to the same quarter in 2012 but slightly better than expected, according to the International Data Corporation (IDC) Worldwide Quarterly PC Tracker. Total shipments were effectively right on forecasts of 75.4 million and growth of -11.7%, although Europe, Middle East, and Africa (EMEA) and Asia/Pacific (excluding Japan)(APeJ) were a few points below expectations with the difference made up in the United States.

The numbers reflect a market that is still struggling with the transition to touch-based systems running Windows 8 as well as justifying ultrabook prices in the face of economic pressures and competition from tablets and other devices. A silver lining is that a number of vendors and regions seemed to be focused on inventory reduction during the second quarter, which could reflect planned launches of new models as well as lower inventory going into the second half of the year. However, it also reflects some caution among vendors and the channels in the face of remaining challenges for PCs and more than a year of declining shipments.

Does NVIDIA Display Driver Service Make Your System Vulnerable?

An [ethical?] hacker going by the Twitter handle @peterwintrsmith discovered a gaping security hole in NVIDIA's display driver service that allows ordinary local and remote users to gain administrator privileges in Windows. Mr. Winter-Smith posted a description and details of the exploit, in which he describes the NVIDIA Display Device server (NVVSVC) as listening on a pipe (a means by which different processes talk to each other) "\pipe\nsvr," which has an null/empty discretionary access control list (DACL, a security whitelist for users/groups), letting ordinary logged in local and remote users (firewall permitting, and the remote admin has a local account) to gain administrator rights to the system. In our opinion, the exploit is plausible, and could cut short winter breaks of a few in Santa Clara.
