VESA Introduces ClearMR Certification for Motion Blur Clarity

The Video Electronics Standards Association (VESA) today introduced the ClearMR Compliance Test Specification (ClearMR), an industry standard and logo program that provides a new quality metric for grading motion blur in digital displays. ClearMR is applicable to both LCD and emissive display products, including display panels, TVs, monitors, and computers with embedded displays, such as all-in-ones, laptops, notebooks and tablets. The new metric Clear Motion Ratio (CMR), as defined in the ClearMR standard, provides a clear numerical value based on the ratio of clear pixels to blurry pixels, which enables consumers to easily compare the amount of motion blur between VESA Certified ClearMR displays. CMR replaces Motion Picture Response Time (MPRT) and other methods of blur characterization since these other metrics do not accurately reflect the true nature of blur.

ASRock is Expected to Launch Multiple Gaming Monitors

Several new ASRock products have passed through the KCC, which is the Korean equivalent of the FCC and normally this would be a new motherboard or maybe some small form factor system, but surprisingly enough, we're looking at gaming monitors. The leak comes courtesy of @momomo_us who's dug up a lot of juicy details on two of the models, whereas we only know the basic specs for the other models. First up, we have the PG34WQ15R, which is a 34-inch curved VA display with a 3440x1440 resolution. It supports FreeSync Premium and has a refresh rate range of 48 to 165 Hz over DisplayPort and 48-100 Hz over HDMI, which seems to be an HDMI 1.4 limitation. The next model is the PG27FF, which is a regular 1080p IPS display that also supports FreeSync Premium, here with a refresh rate range of 48 to 165 Hz over both DP and HDMI. There appears to be multiple sub SKUs of this model, but all start with PG27F.

Then we have the PG32QF, which should be a flat 32-inch display, with unknown specs, but the Q in the model name suggests that it's a 1440p monitor. Finally we have the PG42U, where the U in the model name suggests it's a 4K 42-inch display. The stand looks nearly identical to the one ASUS uses for its ROG Strix XG43UQ 4K screen and the specs are likely to be quite similar too, which means we might see support for 144 Hz or higher refresh rates. All four displays are manufactured by TPV Technology, which produces its own monitors under the AOC, Envision and Philips brands. It's unknown when these new monitors from ASRock will launch, but considering they've passed through certification, it's highly likely that they'll turn up sometime later this year.

AMD RDNA 3 GPUs to Support DisplayPort 2.0 UHBR 20 Standard

AMD's upcoming Radeon RX 7000 series of graphics cards based on the RDNA 3 architecture are supposed to feature next-generation protocols all over the board. Today, according to a patch committed to the Linux kernel, we have information about display output choices AMD will present to consumers in the upcoming products. According to a Twitter user @Kepler_L2, who discovered this patch, we know that AMD will bundle DisplayPort 2.0 technology with UHBR 20 transmission mode. The UHBR 20 standard can provide a maximum of 80 Gbps bi-directional bandwidth, representing the highest bandwidth in a display output connector currently available. With this technology, a sample RDNA 3 GPU could display 16K resolution with Display Stream Compression, 10K without compression, or two 8K HDR screens running at 120 Hz refresh rate. All of this will be handled by Display Controller Next (DCN) engine for media.

The availability of DisplayPort 2.0 capable monitors is a story of its own. VESA noted that they should come at the end of 2021; however, they got delayed due to the lack of devices supporting this output. Having AMD's RDNA 3 cards as the newest product to support these monitors, we would likely see the market adapt to demand and few available products as the transition to the latest standard is in the process.

Porotech Unlocks A World First In Micro-LED Dynamic Pixel Tuning

Porotech, a pioneer in micro-LED and GaN-based semiconductor material technology, will be unveiling DynamicPixelTuning on its PoroGaN microdisplay platform at the Display Week event in California next week. The breakthrough makes it possible to create full-colour or tuneable-colour displays using identical pixels from a single wafer - achieving colour uniformity, while eliminating complex fabrication processes. The innovation is set to accelerate the commercialisation of micro-LEDs, mini-LEDs and LEDs to deliver next-generation display products for AR/MR/VR applications, smart wearable devices, smart displays and large-scale direct view displays.

Porotech is the first in the world to unlock dynamic colour tuning of LED chips and pixels. Its PoroGaN platform makes it possible for each individual tiny LED on an epiwafer to emit all colours of the visible spectrum. At this stage, the Porotech proof-of-concept displays are tuneable monocolour, with uniform brightness and colour for display products in the micro (µm) and nano (nm) pixel space. But the company's proprietary PoroGaN platform and Dynamic Pixel technology are paving the way to a monolithic full-colour RGB display very soon.

AOC and Porsche Design Launches Agon Pro PD32M Mini-LED Display

AOC has launched a new gaming monitor under its Agon Pro brand and the PD32M has been designed in cooperation with Porsche Design, which for clarity's sake, isn't the same company as the car manufacturer. The PD32M is based on a "frameless" 32-inch 4K 144 Hz capable mini-LED display and carries a Display HDR 1400 certification, with a peak brightness of 1600 nits. It is also said to deliver 97 percent of the DCI-P3 colour space, which would make it a decent display for work as well as play. The display also supports Adaptive Sync, but it's unclear if it's FreeSync or G-Sync compatible.

On the connectivity side there are a pair of HDMI 2.1 ports, one DisplayPort, presumably of the 1.4 variety, one USB-C, although no mention of display input via USB-C is mentioned, as well as a USB-C four USB-A 3.2 (most likely 10 Gbps) ports and a headphone jack. Based on the picture of the rear of the PD32M, there also appears to be a couple of additional 3.5 mm jacks and another port of unknown type around the back. It's also clear from this picture that an external power brick is being used, although AOC hasn't provided any details about it.
