HP's Fanless Chromebox Isn't

HP is alleged to be falsely marketing its Chromebox desktop as "fanless." The company in its marketing material (pictured below), describes its Chromebox as being "silent, quiet, and efficient," and "dust-free" due to its "fanless design." When tested by YouTube-based hardware reviewer Lyon Siedman, he noticed a hum and vibration caused only by the presence of a fan. When sifting through HP's very own disassembly guide (PDF), you'll find a picture that reveals its fan-heatsink, used to cool the 17W TDP CPU. Since when is "fanless" a figure of speech like "silent?"

Zalman ZM-DF12 Smart Fans Begin Selling

Zalman's most advanced fan, the ZM-DF12, started selling. Built in the 25 mm-thick 120 mm form-factor, the fan features a 'dual-impeller' design, which works to increase air-flow, at lower speeds. The dual-impeller is basically two sets of blades spinning along a common motor. The motor features a nano-polymer bearing that has lower thermal deformation over time than common fluid-dynamic bearing types. The fan features a 'reversed' frame assembly. The frame holds the hub from behind, rather than the front. The back part of the motor hub hence doesn't spin along with the impeller. It instead features the fan's in-built controller, that lets you control speed in three steps - 800 RPM, 1,200 RPM, and 1,600 RPM. The fan takes input from a 3-pin connector. At its maximum speed, it pushes 63.76 CFM of air, with 33 dBA noise output.

Spire Announces the Air Force 120 LED Fan

Spire today introduced its latest cooling creation, the Air Force 120 LED case/CPU cooler fan. Seen below, this new 120 mm model features a Nano precision bearing, a fan blade shape designed for 'ultra-silent operation', silicon rubber anti-vibration pads, sleeved wires, and four crystal blue LEDs.

The Air Force 120 LED can operate at 600 to 1500 RPM and has a maximum sound output of 22 dBA. The fan is backed by a five-year warranty and has a price tag of $18.95/€14.95 (before taxes).

CRYORIG Previews New H5 Coolers and RIMS Fan Concept at Computex

CRYORIG, innovator of PC thermal peripherals is releasing a whole new line of single tower coolers as well as an innovative case fan concept. The CRYORIG H Series will for the first time feature CRYORIG's proprietary Hive Fin technology, which allows the reduction of the airflow turbulence. An even faster exhaust of hot air is achieved thanks to the new Jet Fin Acceleration technology. Beginning with the 160 mm tall H5 and later the 145 mm tall H7 cooler, the H series will fit into the mainstream range of CRYORIG's product lineup.

CRYORIG furthermore presented an exciting new concept of soon to be released case fans. The RIMS series allows users to replace the whole fan bearing on their own. Replacement fan bearing units, such as the FDB and Ball Bearing version, will be available on the market separately. Users will also be able to detach the fan blade unit of the RIMS fans for cleaning purposes.

Corsair Unveils the Hydro Series HG10 GPU Cooling Bracket

Corsair, a worldwide leader in high-performance PC hardware, today announced the Hydro Series HG10 GPU cooling bracket, a powerful new accessory that gives gamers the opportunity to replace a stock graphics card cooler with any of Corsair's Hydro Series liquid CPU coolers. The resulting upgrade unleashes the GPU's hidden graphics performance by reducing GPU temperatures by as much as 50°C (122F), cutting down on droning fan noise, reducing GPU throttling, and boosting overclocking potential.

In conjunction with the new HG10, Corsair also premiered new LED-infused versions of its award-winning Air Series SP120 and SP140 static pressure fans in five different colors - red, white, blue, green, or purple.

Noctua Unveils its Flocked Surface Fans

Noctua showed off its newest innovation in PC fan design, the Flocked Surface impeller. Simply put, these fan impellers feature fibrous flock layers along the surface, which creates a turbulent boundary layer of air, much like dimples do on golf balls, resulting in increased air-flow, and decreased air-flow separation (whiplash). Noctua is flocking its fans in two ways, flocked impeller, and flocked frame interior. Examples of both are pictured below.

LEPA Unveils Four New Barometric Oil-less Bearing Fans

LEPA, the LED fan expert, announces its new series of fans, including the LEPA CASINO 4C Advance; LEPA BOL.QUIET PWM; LEPA BOL.QUIET Tri-Speed and the LEPA VORTEX 88C.

The four series feature the patented BOL (Barometric Oil-less) bearing, a self-lubricating design with nano-particles. BOL bearing features for minimal friction operation and is quieter than traditional 2 ball-bearing designs; the special nano-particles are especially applied for using in a high working ambient, with MTBF≧160,000 hours.

Noctua Introduces Two New Fan Product Lines and Accessory Kits

Noctua today expanded its product portfolio with two new fan product lines and a wide range of accessory kits. Whereas the redux line addresses price-conscious users by reissuing some of Noctua's most popular, award-winning models and presenting them in streamlined, more affordable packages, the industrialPPC (Protected Performance Cooling) line is conceived for industrial heavy duty applications that require enhanced cooling performance and advanced ingress protection.

"Our new product lines allow us to address audiences we have not been able to reach in the past", explains Mag. Roland Mossig (Noctua CEO), "Coming at about 3/4 of the price of our standard models, the redux line is ideal for all those looking for a more affordable entry into the world of premium quality quiet cooling. The industrialPPC fans fulfil our industry client's requests for high speed models that are suitable for use in challenging environments. However, I think they will also appeal to PC enthusiasts striving for extreme performance. Last but not least, the introduction of the two new product lines allows us to respond to the recurring demands for Noctua fans in different colors."

Scythe Unveils the Kaze Master Flat II Fan Controller

Japanese cooling-expert Scythe is hereby announcing the successor of the Kaze Master Flat. The new version is using the classic design of the predecessor but omits the Protective Display Cover and replaces it with a solid front-panel with decently implemented buttons, offering users a clean appearance and fast access.

The big Vacuum Fluorescent Display (VFD) covers most of the front-panel space and provides great overview of values that matter. Total of four touch-sensitive buttons are located in the corners, giving access to all the main functions of the Kaze Master Flat II fan-controller. The buttons on the right side allow users to adjust the fan speed in the range from 0 to 9.999 RPM, depending on the connected fan. Fan speed is adjusted by changing the input-voltage between 3,7 and 12 volts, as it has been done with other Scythe fan-controllers in the past. Each fan channel supports regular 3-pin and 4-pin PWM fans. Total consumption per channel has been tripled to 3 ampere (36 watts).

Cooler Master HybridFlow Case Fan Pictured

Hybrid-impeller fans are the rage again, following its launch by ASUS in its DirectCU Mini line of graphics cards. Cooler Master launched a case fan based on the same concept of an impeller with both lateral and axial flow blades, called HybridFlow. Unlike in a graphics card, where air flowing laterally has an escape through the rear panel, a case fan typically doesn't, and so Cooler Master designed the frame of the fan to funnel lateral flow outside (or wherever the fan's airflow is directed at). For now, HybridFlow comes in just the one size - 120 mm. Depending on how it's received, Cooler Master could try out other sizes.
