Huntkey Releases 100 W GaN Fast Chargers to Satisfy Users' Multiple Charging Needs

Harman Launches a Range of Mobile Power Accessories Under InfinityLab Brand

This one is going to be a bit tricky to explain, but Samsung owned Harman, has launched a new brand called InfinityLab, which will be selling mobile charging and power products, that will compete with Samsung. We can't really explain this, but we're sure there's some kind of logic behind it all.

What we're looking at is a set of three USB chargers, comprising of a 20 W model for $19.95, a 30 W model for $29.95 and a 65 W model for $49.95, all with a USB-C port and the 30 W and 65 W models also get a USB-A port. The 65 W model is using GaN (that's a curse word in Taiwan btw) or Gallium Nitride power conversion parts and as such joins a growing ecosystem of compact chargers with fairly high output.

Raytheon Technologies and GLOBALFOUNDRIES Partner to Accelerate 5G Wireless Connectivity Using Gallium Nitride on Silicon (GaN-on-Si)

Raytheon Technologies (NYSE: RTX), a leading aerospace and defense technology company, and GLOBALFOUNDRIES (GF ), the global leader in feature-rich semiconductor manufacturing, will collaborate to develop and commercialize a new gallium nitride on silicon (GaN-on-Si) semiconductor that will enable game-changing radio frequency performance for 5G and 6G mobile and wireless infrastructure applications.

Under the agreement, Raytheon Technologies will license its proprietary gallium nitride on silicon technology and technical expertise to GF, which will develop the new semiconductor at its Fab 9 facility in Burlington, Vermont. Gallium nitride is a unique material used to build high-performance semiconductors that can handle significant heat and power levels. This makes it ideal to handle 5G and 6G wireless signals, which require higher performance levels than legacy wireless systems.

Strong Growth Expected for Third-Generation Semiconductors in 2021, Says TrendForce

The third-generation semiconductor industry was impaired by the US-China trade war and the COVID-19 pandemic successively from 2018 to 2020, according to TrendForce's latest investigations. During this period, the semiconductor industry on the whole saw limited upward momentum, in turn leading to muted growth for the 3rd gen semiconductor segment as well. However, this segment is likely to enter a rapid upturn owing to high demand from automotive, industrial, and telecom applications. In particular, the GaN power device market will undergo the fastest growth, with a $61 million revenue, a 90.6% YoY increase, projected for 2021.

China Focuses on 3rd Generation Semiconductors in Aim for Self-Sufficiency

The People Republic of China has always released 5-year plans that have a goal of achieving something. And in the latest, 14th 5-year plan China has an eye on the semiconductor industry. Specifically, China wants to develop independence and self-sufficiency when it comes to semiconductors. With tensions between the US and China raising, it is a smart move to have domestic technology to rely on. The new plan starts next year, 2021, and ends in the year 2025. In that period, China will devote financial resources and human workforce that will hopefully enable its goal. The primary aim for this 14th plan seems to be 3rd generation semiconductor technology. What is meant by that is a technology like gallium nitride (GaN) and silicon carbide (SiC). These technologies would be a nice addition to China's portfolio of semiconductors, so we should wait and see what comes out of it.
