Russian Baikal-S Processor With 48 Arm-Based Cores Boots Up, Uses RISC-V Coprocessor for Safe Boot and Management

In recent years, government institutions have been funding the development of home-grown hardware that will power the government infrastructure. This trend was born out of a desire to design chips with no back doors implemented so that no foreign body could monitor the government's processes. Today, Russian company Baikal Electronics managed to boot up the Baikal-S processor with 48 cores based on Arm Instruction Set Architecture (ISA). The processor codenamed BE-S1000 manages to operate 48 cores at a 2.0 GHz base frequency, with a maximum boost of 2.5 GHz clock speed. All of that is achieved at the TDP of 120 Watts, making this design very efficient.

When it comes to some server configurations, the Baikal-S processor run in up to four sockets in a server board. It offers a home-grown RISC-V processor for safe boot and management, so the entire SoC is controlled by a custom design. Baikal Electronics provided some benchmark numbers, which you can see in the slides below. They cover SPEC2006 CPU Integer, Coremark, Whetstone, 7Zip, and HPLinkpack performance. Additionally, the company claims that Baikal-S is in line with Intel Xeon Gold 6148 Skylake design and AMD EPYC 7351 CPU based on Zen1 core. Compared to Huawei's Kunpeng 920, the Baikal-S design provides 0.86x performance.

AMD Ryzen 3000C-series Processors Based on Existing "Zen+" IP, Heavy TDP Optimization

AMD earlier today announced its Ryzen 3000C-series processors targeted at Chromebooks, a segment where the company feels it can bring more to the table than Intel's entry-level Celeron, Pentium Silver, and Pentium Gold mobile processors. Responding to a questionnaire by TechPowerUp, AMD revealed a handful details about these processors. The Ryzen 3000C-series processors are based on the 12 nm "Picasso" silicon, while the Athlon Gold and Athlon Silver parts are based on 14 nm. The "Picasso" based parts combine up to 4 "Zen+" CPU cores, with an iGPU based on the "Vega" graphics architecture, with up to 10 NGCUs. AMD has optimized all SKUs for a 15 W TDP target.

Responding to a question on storage specification or possible collaboration with MediaTek on WLAN controllers, AMD responded that it wishes a diverse hardware ecosystem for its OEM partners, without getting into specifics. There was no denial on the MediaTek bit. The Ryzen 7 3700C practically maxes out the "Picasso" silicon within the 15 W TDP envelope, which got us wondering if AMD has its eyes on the premium Chromebook segment, possibly even Google's first-party Chromebook Pixel brand. To this company responded that while the 3700C has a solid feature-set for premium Chromebooks, there are no first-party Pixel products on the anvil. AMD has just entered the market, and possibly wants to make a dent on the bulk of the Chromebook market first.

Intel Updates x86/x64 Software Developer Manual With Tremont Architecture Details

Intel has today released the 43rd edition of its x86/x64 ISA developer manual designed to help developers see what's new in x86 world and make software optimizations for Intel's platform. In the latest edition of the manual, Intel has revealed the details of its low-power x86 "Tremont" architecture designed for 10 nm efficient, low-power computing. Announced last year in October, Intel promised to deliver a big IPC increase compared to the previous generation low-power CPU microarchitecture like the Goldmont Plus family. To achieve extra performance, Intel has implemented a lot of new solutions.

For starters, Tremont boasts better branch prediction unit, with increased capacity for instruction queue and better path-based conditional and indirect prediction. The front-end fetch and decode pipeline have been updated as well. Now the design is a 6-wide Out of Order Execution (OoOE) pipeline which can process 6 instructions per cycle. The Data cache is now upgraded to 32 KB. The load and store execution pipelines are now doubled and they are capable of two loads and two stores, or one load and one store, depending on the application. Tremont also updates on one important point and that is a dedicated store data port for integer and vector integer/floating-point data. Another big improvement is happening in the cryptography department. Tremont now features Galois-field instructions labeled as the GFNI family of instructions. There are two AES units for faster AES encryption and decryption. The already implemented SHA-NI cryptography standard was enhanced and it now is much faster as well. For mode in-depth report please check out Intel's x86/x64 manual.

University of Leeds Develops 2D Gold Substrate Technology for More Efficient Precious Metal Deployment

Scientists with the University of Leeds have managed to deploy gold in an ultra-efficient layer that's just two atoms thick, paving the way for much improved efficiency in the usage of the precious metal. The development, which university representatives claim marks a "landmark achievement", will open doors for the medical device and electronics industries-and also as a catalyst to speed up chemical reactions in a range of industrial processes. Because this 2D gold technology is up to 10x more efficient than current gold nanoparticle deployment (since all the gold particles are part of the surface, with no gold being left unused due to it being below the surface, in a bulk dispersion that's unavoidable with current coating technologies).

This means that materials savings can be achieved - which will likely be a magnet to the electronics industry, which will be able to not only increase efficiency of deployed gold, but also reduce waste of the precious material. Scientists behind the breakthrough claim this could also serve as a gateway for the development of other 2D materials, since lessons learned here may be applicable to other materials. All that remains (and that's putting it nicely) is being able to develop ways to scale-up the process, which deploys gold in a flake-like manner (scientists call it nanoseaweed of gold) that is flexible enough to be built into bendable devices.

AMD Radeon RX 5700 XT 50th Anniversary Edition Pictured - Gold and Black Color Scheme

You've heard of it, and now you'll see it. AMD's introducing a commemorative edition of their RX 5700 XT graphics card, which brings back the company's XT suffix to video card performance grading (wondering if an XTX video card will eventually make its appearance...) - and a new, black and gold color scheme. The RX 5700 XT 50th Anniversary Edition will feature increased clocks over their counterparts, with an up to 1980 MHz Boost clock, 1830 MHz Game Clock, and 1680 MHz base clock (compared to 1905 MHz, 1755 MHz and 1605 MHz for the non-anniversary edition.

ASUS at Computex 2019: TUF Gaming VG27AQ Monitor, ROG STRIX 650 W Gold Power Supply

ASUS at Computex 2019 showcased a myriad of products - as is usual, for one of the foremost PC hardware manufacturers. This news piece breaks down two of these products: the TUF Gaming VG27AQ monitor and the ROG STRIX 650 W Gold power supply. Starting with that which allows you to see, the TUF Gaming VG27AQ monitor features both ULMB and Adaptive Sync support (in the form of AMD's FreeSync and NVIDIA's G-Sync). Dubbed ELMB, the new feature allows the monitor to keep its Active Sync features active for super smooth gameplay, whilst enabling motion blur reduction - usually, a choice between the two technologies has to be made.

The 27" screen offers an IPS panel with a 2560 x 1440 pixel resolution, 1 ms response time and maximum 155 Hz refresh rate (Adaptive Sync works between the 40-155 Hz interval) over a DisplayPort connection (144 Hz max over HDMI). A maximum brightness of 350 cd/m² doesn't win any serious accolades, but is more than enough for gaming scenarios. Connectors stand at 2x HDMI 1.4 ports, 1x DisplayPort 1.2, and 2x USB 3.0 ports.

Sapphire To Launch Gold RX 590 Nitro+ for AMD's 50th Anniversary

Yes, we know that AMD's graphics division anniversary really isn't on its 50th year - ATI's acquisition, the true spirit behind AMD's graphics prowess, occurred back in 2006. However, that doesn't mean AMD's graphics aren't deserving of special commemorative editions. Sapphire have taken it upon themselves to celebrate the occasion with a gold-colored RX 590 graphics card.

The leak came over from one of my own homecountry's webshops, with a full product page that has since been taken down. There is no difference between this card and the usual blue RX 590 Nitro+ - the devil is in the color, so to say. Reference clocks remain the same at 1560 MHz core, and the cooling solution is the same. In Portuguese prices, the pricing difference seems to amount to some extra €25 for the limited edition graphics card. Whether the pricing difference is enough to warrant the additional investment should go according to your own mileage.

SilverStone Introduces the 550 W and 650 W Strider Gold S PSUs

Silverstone today announced two new introductions to their Strider PSU lineup, in the form of the 50 W and 650 W Strider Gold S PSUs. Both of these feature a (you guessed it) 80 Plus Gold certification for power efficiency, whilst being extremely small (140 mm in depth) - and fully modular, as most users would like them to be.

Both power supplies are of the single +12V rail type, with SilverStone quoting a strict ±3% voltage regulation with low ripple/noise. A 120 mm fan takes care of cooling requirements, and the PSUs carry Over-power, Over-current, Over-voltage, Over-temperature, Under-voltage and Short-circuit protection. Reatail pricing stands at 77.60 EUR (excluding VAT) for the the 550W ST55F-GS (which packs in three 80 x 15mm PWM fans) and 91.00 EUR (excluding VAT) for the 650W ST55F-GS.

Cooler Master Announces V Platinum and XG Gold Advanced Power Supplies

Cooler Master, a leading manufacturer of desktop components and peripherals, today announced two new lines of Power Supply Units (PSU) that will be available in the first half of 2019.

V Platinum
The V Platinum series joins Cooler Master's high end PSU lineup. Equipped with 100% Japanese capacitors, an 80 PLUS Platinum efficiency rating and wattage levels of 850, 1000 and 1300, the V Platinum will provide enough power and stability for any heavy gamer, content creator or overclocker.

A built-in rail switch allows users to change between multi and single rail power output settings for more stability or efficiency depending on PC configuration and use scenario. The built-in Thermal Regulation Mode (TRM) of the V Platinum regulates the temperature of the PSU by slowly increasing the fan speed when temperatures increase, maintaining a comfortable unit temperature and minimizing noise output. Seasonic Prime AirTouch to Finally Launch Mid-January

Seasonic is finally getting around to launch its Prime AirTouch power-supply series sometime mid-January 2019. Just to give you an idea of how far along this product has been delayed, Seasonic developed it way back in 2016, and first exhibited it in CES 2017. The series will debut with an 850W model (SSR-850GD-AT), priced at $160. This SKU has already been showing up on American retailers such as Newegg and Amazon since late-October, but has been out of stock. A variation of the Prime Gold series, the AirTouch offers a small degree of fan-control to users. Its 135 mm fluid-dynamic bearing fan comes with five fan-curves, which you can select from by pushing a round button near the AC receptacle.

The fan-control button is embedded with an RGB LED that indicates the active curve. The first curve, called "Silent" (white), kills the fan when the load is below 40%, runs the fan whisper-quiet between 40-80% load, and spools up above 80%. The second curve, called "Low" (blue), runs the fan whisper-quiet up to 60% load, and spools it up from there. The "Medium" (green) curve runs the fan at moderate speeds and caps its speed to 65% beyond 80% load. The "High" (amber) curve maintains moderate speeds up to 80% load, beyond which the maximum fan-speed is capped at 80%. The "Turbo" (red) mode ignores all parameters and simply runs the fan at 100% speed. Seasonic is backing this PSU with its legendary 12-year warranty.
