The P300 Desktop PC Hard Drive series offers high performance ideal for home and business users and is available with up to 3 TB of storage capacity. They operate at 7,200 rpm and have built-in shock sensors that detect impacts and reduce vibration during read and write operations, improving tracking accuracy and performance.

Toshiba America Electronic Components, Inc. (TAEC), a committed technology leader, announces two new surveillance and video streaming Hard Drives to the consumer internal lineup, the S300 and V300. Seagate may currently be one of the first tech companies in storage conversations due to their upcoming HAMR (Heat-Assisted Magnetic Recording) technology, which should enable 20 TB HDDs by 2020. And even though HDDs are better known for their high areal density and price/storage ratio, which is only bound to increase through the usage of HAMR, Seagate knows that areal density is hardly one of the principal bottlenecks in HDD technology. The bottleneck, as it usually is, is speed.

HDDs have an old design philosophy by now, where an actuator arm moves read/writing heads in parallel across the surface of the disk - nowadays, there are usually two heads per platter (one on the upper side, and one on the underside of it). As you might image, a given head can either read or write at one point in time - and all heads move in tandem, with different heads reading or writing across the multiple spinning discs that constitute the hard drive. This, however, means that HDD reading efficiency is lost - due to how small the 1s and 0s are on HDDs, only one head can be moved to an exact data path, with all the others moving with it, spending power and increasing the load on the actuator for nary a speed gain or minimal workload.

Toshiba America Electronic Components, Inc., a committed technology leader, announces the MD06ACA-V, the latest addition to its SV Series line-up of 3.5-inch hard drives for surveillance applications. With its 6 TB desktop hard drives selling for as low as $300, Seagate is pushing up the density envelope. The company is ready with functional engineering samples of its 8 TB (8,000 GB) hard drives, and has sent them over to major enterprise (hosting / cloud) customers for reliability testing and feedback. Seagate CEO Steve Luczo revealed this, at last week's Q4FY earnings call, responding to a question.

Seagate is eyeing customers among cloud storage providers with its gargantuan hard drives. Cost-effective cloud storage is being seen as the biggest driver of storage capacity expansion among hard drive makers. On the subject of its upcoming drives, Luczo stated: "While it's still early in the development of our Kinetic object-based storage platform, we are in deep technical discussions with a very broad-base of enterprise customers. We believe our focus on developing key values for object-based storage will make the Kinetic platform a differentiated offering in the cloud storage marketplace." Seagate didn't mention when it plans to actually launch the 8 TB drive, as that would depend on the kind of feedback it receives from those customers.

Buffalo Japan announced a pair of new portable hard drive models, the HD-PA2.0TU3 and the HD-PZ2.0U3-BC (pictured in that order, below). Both drives come in capacities of 2 TB, and take advantage of USB 3.0 SuperSpeed interface, with a single cable handling both power and host connectivity, but the HD-PA2.0TU3 additionally also features Thunderbolt. While the former measures 81 mm x 130 mm x 23 mm (WxDxH), featuring a combination of USB 3.0 and Thunderbolt connectivity; the latter measures 89 mm x 128 mm x 18 mm, features just USB 3.0, but offers a silicone based inner housing, which offers shock resistance that makes it meet 516.5 Procedure IV MIL-STD-810F requirements. Both are expected to be generally available around mid-July.

Western Digital is expected to end shipments of parallel-ATA (PATA or legacy ATA) hard drives from December 29, 2013. The company maintained a small lineup of PATA hard drives in its product stack, to cater to people with older laptops looking for hard drive upgrades, and whoever else may be using the old standard that was blasted into obsolescence exactly a decade ago, with the introduction of SATA and AHCI. Product discontinuation notifications (PDNs) for the company's last Caviar PATA hard drives, bearing model numbers WD800AAJB (80 GB), WD1600AAJB (160 GB), WD2500AAJB (250 GB), WD3200AAJB (320 GB), WD4000AAJB (400 GB), and WD5000AAJB (500 GB) were issued this may, soliciting the last orders from OEMs and distributors. The last of those orders will be fulfilled by the 29th, when the drives will enter end-of-life (EOL) state. The company will only honor active warranties from then on.
