Worldwide PC monitor shipments totaled 32.5 million units in the second quarter of 2014 (2Q14), a year-over-year decline of -2.9%, according to the International Data Corporation (IDC) Worldwide Quarterly PC Monitor Tracker. IDC expects worldwide shipments to continue on their current trajectory, slipping to 107 million units for the full year 2018.

"Despite the overall decline, there was a strong quarter-over-quarter growth rate of 11% in the United States and a slight increase in PC Monitor shipments in Asia/Pacific (excluding Japan)(APeJ). In addition, the shipment totals were stronger than forecast by 4%," said Keerthi Maganti, Research Analyst, Worldwide PC Monitor Trackers at IDC.

Worldwide PC monitor shipments totaled nearly 33.7 million units in the first quarter of 2014 (1Q14), a year-over-year decline of -0.4%, according to the International Data Corporation (IDC) Worldwide Quarterly PC Monitor Tracker. IDC expects worldwide shipments to continue on their current trajectory, slipping to 106 million units for the full year 2018.

"Despite the overall decline, the shipment totals were stronger than the forecast of 31 million units," said Phuong Hang, Program Director, Worldwide Trackers at IDC. "Geographically, Japan and the Middle East and Africa (MEA) regions delivered the largest gains during the first quarter while Dell and HP both experienced solid shipment growth."

Total worldwide PC monitor shipments were slightly below 35.0 million units in the fourth quarter of 2013 (4Q13), a decrease of -0.4% compared to the previous quarter yet 2.9% more than forecast, according to the International Data Corporation (IDC) Worldwide Quarterly PC Monitor Tracker. The -3.8% year-over-year growth in 4Q13 was largely due to declining PC desktop sales.

"Dell and HP both saw increases in unit shipments for the worldwide PC monitor market for the second time in a down year," said Jennifer Song, Research Analyst, Worldwide Trackers at IDC. "At a regional level, EMEA experienced the largest positive growth during the fourth quarter, with Italy and Spain posting the biggest gains."

An NPD DisplaySearch boldly claiming that the industry will ship as many as 2 million Ultra HD (3840 x 2160-pixel) monitors by the end of 2014, is beginning to sound a little more plausible, with display makers pushing for "affordable" Ultra HD monitors in the 28-inch size segment, by mid-2014. By these, we're not referring to cheap, borderline gray market monitors from lesser known Korean manufacturers; but display majors from the same country, such as Samsung and LG. According to Hardware.info, which recently published a review of the Samsung LU28D590D, a 28-inch monitor based on a cheap TN-film panel by Chimei (CMO), that offers Ultra HD resolution; prices of the display could be as low as 600€ or £500, by mid-2014. So if you're planning to ditch the full HD (1920 x 1080) or WUXGA (1920 x 1200) monitor you've been holding on to for the past 5 or so years, wait just a little longer.

LG will soon be releasing (at first in Japan) a new monitor equipped with an AH-IPS panel, the 23.8-inch Cinema Screen aka model 24MP76HM-S. Pictured below, LG's display has a slim (5.6 mm) frame, a blue light reduction mode, a native resolution of 1920 x 1080 pixels, 178/178 degree viewing angles, a 1,000:1 contrast ratio, and a 5 ms (GTG) response time.

The 24MP76HM-S also features two 5 W speakers, and one D-Sub plus two HDMI connectors. The monitor will become available later this month.

Total worldwide PC monitor shipments were more than 35.0 million units in the third quarter of 2013 (3Q13), an increase of 4.5% compared to the previous quarter and 1.2 million units more than forecast, according to the International Data Corporation (IDC) Worldwide Quarterly PC Monitor Tracker. Year-over-year growth was -8.6% in 3Q13, largely due to the ongoing decline in PC sales.

"Asia/Pacific (excluding Japan)(APeJ), Western Europe, and Central and Eastern Europe (CEE) outperformed the overall market in the third quarter and increased their regional market shares," said Jennifer Song, Research Analyst, Worldwide Trackers at IDC. "China and India were the top growth drivers within APeJ, while Germany and Russia were the leading country markets in Europe."

Dell is on a roll. After announcing its 28-inch UltraSharp P2815Q and 24-inch UltraSharp UP2414Q, both of which feature Ultra HD (3840 x 2160 pixels) display resolutions in the 16:9 aspect-ratio, the company is turning its attention to the newfound 21:9 ultra-wide aspect-ratio. Expreview unearthed plans for a new 34-inch display, with an unusually high resolution that could woo away some of the Ultra HD crowd. The new U3415W from Dell offers a native resolution of 3440 x 1440, which has the same Y-axis as WQHD (2560 x 1440 pixels), albeit much wider. Basic math would tell you that it's still a staggering 40 percent lower pixel count than Ultra HD. The U3415W reportedly features an IPS LCD panel made by LG. The display should offer a decent middle-ground between currently $400-ish 27-inch WQHD monitors, and four-figure >30-inch Ultra-HD ones taking shape.

LG Electronics (LG) today announced the newest version of its popular Bluetooth stereo headset, LG TONE ULTRA (HBS-800). This feature-packed model is the worthy successor to the LG TONE (HBS-700/730), a top-seller with more than two million units sold since its introduction in 2010.

The TONE ULTRA was developed specifically to provide a superior audio experience with eyebrow-raising stereo sound. LG Electronics Inc. (LG) today announced third-quarter 2013 consolidated revenues of KRW 13.89 trillion (USD 12.51 billion). While competitive conditions in the TV sector and an unfavorable foreign currency exchange rate affected overall revenues compared with the 2012 third quarter, sales of mobile devices increased year-over-year by 24 percent. LG saw a 27 percent increase in third-quarter operating profit to KRW 217.80 billion (USD 196.34 million) compared with the same period last year.

The LG Home Entertainment Company reported revenues of KRW 5.01 trillion (USD 4.50 billion), a 7 percent decline from the same period a year ago, reflecting slower global TV demand and lower selling prices. Higher sales in developing markets such as Asia and the CIS region were offset by softness in Europe. Operating profit of KRW 124.40 billion (USD 111.68 million) increased both year-over-year and quarter-over-quarter as a result of more efficient management of operating and marketing expense. As it enters the holiday selling season, LG plans to expand global sales of premium products such as OLED TVs and Ultra HD TVs while continuing to carefully manage costs.

LG Electronics USA today launched two new "UltraWide" 21:9 aspect ratio* LED monitors designed to offer professional tools for effective multitasking and excellent gaming experience. Dell moved ahead of Samsung in the worldwide PC monitor market for the first time since 2007, shipping more than 5.0 million units in the second quarter of 2013 (2Q13). Total PC monitor shipments for the quarter were 33.5 million units, which was 1.6 million units more than forecast but still represented a year-over-year decline of -0.7%, according to the International Data Corporation (IDC) Worldwide Quarterly PC Monitor Tracker.

"Dell grew its unit shipments by 12.7% compared to the first quarter of 2013, which vaulted the company into the number one position worldwide. However, Samsung continues to be the worldwide revenue leader, despite its declining shipment numbers," said Jennifer Song, Research Analyst, Worldwide Trackers at IDC. "On a geographic basis, China remained the largest market for PC monitors with 29.2% share, followed by the U.S. with 18.4% share. The number three market, Brazil, trailed by some distance with 4.3% share."

LG Korea has today launched a couple of new, Haswell-powered ultrabooks, a 13.3-inch model known as 13Z930 one with a 15.6-inch display dubbed 15U530. Part of the Ultra Series, these two portable devices feature an IPS screen, a Core i5-4200U processor and a 128 GB solid state drive (the 15U530 also packs a 750 GB hard drive), and run Windows 8. The 13Z930 also has Intel HD 4400 graphics, while its 15.6-inch sibling includes a 2 GB NVIDIA GeForce GT 720M card.

The 13Z930 is just 13.6 mm thick and weighs 1.15 kg, whereas the 15U530, which includes an optical drive, is 20.9 mm thick and 1.95 kg.

In addition to the ultrabooks, LG also revealed the 11T730 Windows tablet. This one is also equipped with a Core i5-4200U CPU and a 128 GB, and has a slide-out keyboard.
