TN-film Panel Based Ultra HD Monitors Could Sell for Cheap by Mid-2014

An NPD DisplaySearch boldly claiming that the industry will ship as many as 2 million Ultra HD (3840 x 2160-pixel) monitors by the end of 2014, is beginning to sound a little more plausible, with display makers pushing for "affordable" Ultra HD monitors in the 28-inch size segment, by mid-2014. By these, we're not referring to cheap, borderline gray market monitors from lesser known Korean manufacturers; but display majors from the same country, such as Samsung and LG. According to Hardware.info, which recently published a review of the Samsung LU28D590D, a 28-inch monitor based on a cheap TN-film panel by Chimei (CMO), that offers Ultra HD resolution; prices of the display could be as low as 600€ or £500, by mid-2014. So if you're planning to ditch the full HD (1920 x 1080) or WUXGA (1920 x 1200) monitor you've been holding on to for the past 5 or so years, wait just a little longer.

This sounds pretty fantastic.

But hey, how about a 3840 x 2160 from a cheap, borderline gray market monitor from lesser known Korean manufacturer? I'd take that too. ;)

I still don't see these being great for desktop use unless you go bigger in size .
icons and text is just to small and scaling in windows is not great .

who cares about 60Hz or 30Hz or even 100/120Hz?
those monitors are useless when response time is huge.

bring back Huge CRTs with tremendous resolution and no response time and make them as efficient as they can be.

Have that already on my Qnix. 1440P @ 110Hz. Samsung PLS panels are very overclockable.

But I can understand if you want that as a standard. I'd be more interested in IPS/PLS at 1440p at 144Hz+.

I call BS. Five bucks says these are just going to be re-branded variants of that Seiki TV panel that downsamples content from 4k to 1440p or whatever lower resolution they can get away with. And even if they actually did this, I doubt anybody owning a TN-based monitor is going to be interested in any more TN panels -- I know I'm not upgrading to anything less than IPS/OLED @ 4k/60Hz.

Ugh.

TN for another ten years of monitors.

Ferchrissake.

You'd have thought 4K would have been an opportunity to end TN once and for all. Instead, here we go again...

(Real) IPS or nothing.

Are seiki tvs Chimei (Innolux) panels? I imagine they probably are (cheap garbage).

My guess is that these probably are indeed 1/4 panels from their 58'' spec, or at least built on that foundation. If you look at their VA panels, for instance, they are the worst compared to everything else out there (for viewing angles, response time, etc). The thought of TN from them is downright frightening.

While I totally understand the desire for a 240hz/4ms full-array back-lit ips 3D-capable UHD screen that is super bright to allow for decent contrast and backlight scanning etc, the fact of the matter is we are seemingly nowhere near any of that, let-alone it being affordable. Heck, no even rec2020 (or comparable adobe/rgb standard, a 40+ bit colorspace) screens are even available yet afaik. OLED is a lonnnng way off.

It is still early days...and the compromises of panel tech are many for uhd.

One does have to ask though....how long until we see at least 'some' monitors cut from the IPS 64.5 (so roughly 32'') spec? One of those 120hz puppies with a full-array backlight and some bright leds could at least be interesting, in theory.

You mean real S-PVA, :)

IPS great and all but it still lacks that extra blacks & contrast. My old Samsung was PVA and now with this Eizo Foris IPS I saw a little diff., Black is not really black unless I use contrast enhancer to fake its ratio.
