Intel Confirms: Arc Mobile Rollout Facing Delays, Desktop Debut On Track for Q2-2022

Intel Graphics on Monday, in a blog post by Lisa Pearce, VP and GM for the Visual Compute Group, answered three important questions around the launch timelines of its elusive Arc Graphics "Alchemist" discrete GPUs for notebooks and desktops. The already-launched Arc mobile GPUs are already being installed on gaming notebooks in production, but Intel blames COVID and the supply-chain crisis in East Asia for delays. Arc 3-series notebooks should be available "ASAP," while Arc 5-series and 7-series powered notebooks should start becoming available in "early Summer." Intel maintains a Summer 2022 launch timeline for desktop Arc graphics cards, and stated that the company will launch entry-level Arc 3-series discrete GPUs first, as OEM-exclusives in Q2-2022, followed by retail availability exclusively in China, with general worldwide availability expected "later this Summer."

AMD Announces Ryzen 6000 PRO Series of Notebook Processors

AMD has unveiled a host of new laptop processors under its Ryzen PRO branding for corporate notebooks, although this time around, AMD has also tagged on an extra "50" to the model number. As such, the top of the range models are the Ryzen 9 Pro 6950H/HS, which appears to be more or less identical to the Ryzen 9 6900HX/HS. There's also a Ryzen 7 and 5 version in the H-series, as well as a Ryzen 7 and 5 in the U-series. In addition to these models, AMD also announced three new Ryzen PRO 5000 U-series models, which end up with the 75 suffix compared to the 25 suffix of the consumer models. These last three CPUs are based on the Zen 3 rather than the Zen 3+ architecture, just as with the consumer models.

AMD claims in excess of 26 hours of battery life from the Ryzen 7 PRO 6850U fitted inside an HP EliteBook 865 G9 with a 76 Wh battery pack. HP and Lenovo appear to be the launch partners for the new PRO series CPUs and HP will offer three different 800-series SKUs with the 6000-series processors and three other notebook series with the 5000-series processors. Lenovo on the other hand has its new Thinkpad Z13 and Z16 notebooks as AMD Ryzen 6000 PRO series exclusive models, as well as the four different Thinkpad models that will come with the same series of CPUs, plus several other models based on the 5000 series CPUs.

PC Shipments Begin to Slow Following Two Years of Strong Growth, According to IDC

Global shipments of traditional PCs, including desktops, notebooks, and workstations, declined 5.1% in the first quarter of 2022 (1Q22) but exceeded earlier forecasts, according to preliminary results from the International Data Corporation (IDC) Worldwide Quarterly Personal Computing Device Tracker. The PC market is coming off two years of double-digit growth, so while the first quarter decline is a change in this momentum, it doesn't mean the industry is in a downward spiral. Despite ongoing supply chain and logistical challenges, vendors still shipped 80.5 million PCs during the quarter. The 1Q22 volume marks the seventh consecutive quarter where global shipments surpassed 80 million, a feat not seen since 2012.

"The focus shouldn't be on the year-over-year decline in PC volumes because that was to be expected. The focus should be on the PC industry managing to ship more than 80 million PCs at a time when logistics and supply chain are still a mess, accompanied by numerous geopolitical and pandemic-related challenges," said Ryan Reith, group vice president with IDC's Worldwide Mobile Device Trackers. "We have witnessed some slowdown in both the education and consumer markets, but all indicators show demand for commercial PCs remains very strong. We also believe that the consumer market will pick up again in the near future. The result of 1Q22 was PC shipment volumes that were near record levels for a first quarter."

Complementary security features embedded in Intel Hardware Shield available exclusively on Intel vPro platform-based devices or AMD Ryzen PRO 6000 Series processors with AMD PRO Security demonstrate the ThinkPad "secure by design" philosophy. Furthermore, ThinkPad is integrating the optional fingerprint reader into the power button for added convenience.

UL Benchmarks Unveils the 3DMark Speed Way Benchmark

UL Benchmarks is ready with a new graphics benchmark for enthusiast-segment graphics cards, to show you whether your present hardware can deal with games coming out several years from now. The new "Speed Way" benchmark utilizes all of the features that make up the DirectX 12 Ultimate API, which include real-time ray tracing, mesh shaders, variable-rate shading, and sampler feedback. It uses ray tracing for reflections, lighting, and global-illumination.

Until now, the various DirectX 12 Ultimate features were only part of 3DMark as API feature-tests. The older "Port Royal" benchmark, which released around the time of NVIDIA "Turing," is the company's first benchmark with real-time ray tracing, although it doesn't use all DirectX 12 Ultimate features. With each new benchmark, the makers of 3DMark collaborate with a new gaming brand sponsor. For Speed Way, it's Legion, a brand of pre-built gaming notebooks and desktops by Lenovo. UL Benchmarks didn't reveal an exact release date except "later this year."

According to UNESCO, more than 1.5 billion students have been impacted by the pandemic and many countries have been affected by extended school closures. Although classes are thankfully reopening, many continue to endure disrupted agendas and at the time of writing more than 35 million learners are still unable to benefit from classroom instruction. The longer-term focus needs to be on learning recovery and returning the trajectory beyond pre-Covid levels. A recent UNESCO report points out that we collectively have an opportunity to reinvent education to be more resilient, equitable and efficient in delivering learning for all. Institutions need to invest in structured learning programs that provide access to technology that can amplify classroom-based experiences. The tools need to be dynamic to support distance learning solutions and computer-assisted learning to help maximize education continuity. As a technology provider, Lenovo is committed to partnering with customers to develop and deliver innovative solutions to enhance learning today and into the future.

Lenovo's ThinkBook Plus Gen 3 Features 120Hz 3072x1440 17.3-inch Display

We've already seen some leaked pictures of Lenovo's awkwardly named ThinkBook Plus Gen 3, but what they didn't convey was the specs and almost all of them are quite impressive. The main display might be the most impressive part, as it's a 17.3-inch, 120 Hz 16:10 panel with a resolution of 3072x1440, which is as far as we know, the first of its kind. Then there's the "tablet" which measures 8-inches, although it's fairly low resolution at 1280x800. It comes with a "digital pen" as Lenovo calls it and is designed for graphics works courtesy of a software plugin that allows it to work with Pantone colours.

CPU wise, we're looking at the brand new 12th gen Intel Core H-series of CPUs, although no mention of the exact SKUs was offered. There's support for up to 32 GB of LPDDR5 RAM and 2 TB of storage. Sadly, graphics are limited to the Intel Iris Xe GPU built into the CPU, which means it might not be the ideal notebook for some of the types of work it was intended for.

Lenovo Announces ThinkPad Z Series Laptops

Lenovo is thrilled to announce a new series of ThinkPad laptops featuring stunning progressive designs that break the mold and introduce new colors and materials for our premium business laptop portfolio. The all-new ThinkPad Z13 and Z16 embark on a contemporary design philosophy targeting a different business user audience. The new striking design reflects changing attitudes towards technology, its impact on the environment and the origins of raw components. Not only is the design meant to provide individualistic premium color accents such as bronze and arctic grey, but it also features more sustainable materials such as recycled aluminium, or recycled black vegan leather. Sustainability extends to the packaging which is made from 100% recyclable and compostable bamboo and sugarcane, and the AC power adapter uses 90% Post-Consumer Content (PCC).

Lenovo ThinkBook Plus with Integrated Tablet Leaks Alongside ThinkPad Z

Although CES 2022 might not be what was initially expected for Lenovo, the company might be revealing several new notebook models, albeit in a more digital fashion than the company had initially planned, due to it pulling out from physically exhibiting at the show. Pictures of at least three upcoming models have leaked courtesy of @Evleaks and all three are intriguing in their own right, as they all bring something new to the table, or should that be lap?

First up we have the 17-inch ThinkBook Plus, which has an integrated tablet on the right hand side of the keyboard, plus a stylus that works with the tablet. Sadly the stylus looks rather "cheap" for a lack of a better word, especially compared to other recent devices with a stylus, so hopefully some third party options will be usable. It appears as if the tablet section can be used for normal touch input as well, based on the leaked pictures. No tech specs were provided, but we can spot what appears to be a combined finger print and power button just above the keyboard and around the back is an HDMI port, two USB type-A ports and a USB-C port, plus what appears to be a power socket and another USB-C port on the left side of the notebook.
