Steam Deck & Nintendo Switch Dominate Among Gamers Who Use Handhelds

TechPowerUp's team conducted research to find out how the market for handheld consoles performs and where its users are mostly going. The large community poll of 22,649 PC gamers, asking a simple "Do you game on a handheld console?" paints a solid picture of the customer base that a handheld console maker can expect. The majority, at 65.3% of the polled gamers, have chosen the option "No," indicating that two-thirds of PC gamers spend time on their main desktop or notebook PCs without using an additional handheld console. Among the 34.7% of respondents (7,852 votes) who game on the go, Valve's Steam Deck leads with 2,798 votes (35.6%), narrowly edging out Nintendo's Switch at 2,785 votes (35.5%).

ASUS's ROG Ally follows with 913 votes (11.6%), while "Other" devices, including Android emulators, retro‑focused units like the Analogue Pocket, and various mini‑PC handhelds, account for 810 votes (10.3%). Boutique Windows handhelds trail further behind, with the Lenovo Legion Go claiming 280 votes (3.6%) and the MSI Claw 266 votes (3.4%). Out of the entire fleet of these handhelds, only the Nintendo Switch is a real console. Others are mini portable PCs, which can serve functionality far beyond those of a console. Gamers are fond of the added functionality, which is why the Steam Deck, running Linux and Windows-based handhelds from ASUS, MSI, Lenovo, and others, are so popular.

Lenovo Releases Fiscal Year 2024/25 Earnings Report

Lenovo Group Limited, together with its subsidiaries ('the Group'), today announced Q4 and full year results for the fiscal year 2024/25, reporting significant increases in overall group revenue and profit. For the full year, revenue grew 21% year-on-year to US$69.1 billion, marking the Group's second-highest annual revenue in its history. Net income was up 36% year-on-year to US$1.4 billion on a non-Hong Kong Financial Reporting Standards (non-HKFRS) basis. AMD Announces Ryzen Threadripper PRO 9000 "Shimada Peak" HEDT Processors

AMD at Computex 2025 announced the Ryzen Threadripper PRO 9000 series processors targeting high-end desktops (HEDT) and workstations. These processors are codenamed "Shimada Peak," and are based on the "Zen 5" microarchitecture. "Shimada Peak" is a variation of the EPYC "Turin" MCM, designed for Socket TR5, with slightly modified I/O. The chip puts out up to 128 PCIe Gen 5 lanes but lacks CXL capability on these lanes, and the memory I/O is set to 8-channel DDR5 (16 sub-channels), down from 12-channel DDR5 on "Turin" (24 sub-channels).

The top SKU, the Ryzen Threadripper PRO 9995WX, comes with a 96-core/192-thread configuration, a 128-lane PCIe Gen 5 I/O, and an 8-channel DDR5 memory interface. The chip comes with a maximum boost frequency of 5.40 GHz, and a total of 384 MB of L3 cache (12x 32 MB). AMD claims a significant 10-20% gain in Cinebench 2024 nT performance over the previous generation 7995WX "Zen 4" processor, and nearly 220% gain over the Intel Xeon W9-3595X processor. Across a wide segment of media, design, architecture, science, and LLM inferencing use-cases, the 9995WX is shown posting performance leads ranging anywhere from 44% to 145% over the W9-3595X. The Threadripper PRO 9000 series will be an OEM-exclusive launch through workstation partners such as Lenovo.

According to fresh reports, Laptops Direct UK listed Lenovo's "Legion 5 15IRX10" 15.1-inch (£1349.97) and "LOQ 15IRX10" 15.6-inch gaming (£1149.97) laptop models; the "83LY000AUK" and "83JE000CUK" SKUs (respectively) seem to be equipped with Team Green's truly entry-level "Blackwell" GPU. Both product descriptions hype up the GeForce RTX 5050 8 GB GPU as offering "high-level graphics performance" and being capable of taking "your visuals to new heights." Officially, this "cheapest" mobile model is supposed to be a secret—going back to late last year, leaks revealed the entire laptop-oriented GeForce RTX 50-series product stack.

Unfortunately, the latest NDA-busting disclosure coincides with similar news regarding desktop relatives. Both lines of GeForce RTX 5060 cards are due for launch next week; expertly timed with Computex 2025 events. Given NVIDIA's apparent stealthy approach, VideoCardz posits that GeForce RTX 5050 Desktop and Mobile products could be introduced in a low-key manner. So far, the firm's manufacturing partners have inadvertently let slip very basic information. The Laptops Direct leak did not include overly-detailed specifications, but momomo_us stumbled upon another unnamed example—suggesting the selection of GDDR7 VRAM. Mid-March whispers seemed to link the GeForce RTX 5050 Mobile model's destiny to this advanced memory standard.

Lenovo Reveals Legion GeForce RTX 5070 & 5060 Ti Custom Card Designs

Report: Global PC Shipments Up 6.7% YoY in Q1 2025 Amid US Tariff Anticipation

Global PC shipments grew 6.7% YoY in Q1 2025 to reach 61.4 million units, according to Counterpoint Research's preliminary data. The growth was mainly driven by PC vendors accelerating shipments ahead of US tariffs and the increasing adoption of AI-enabled PCs amid the end of Windows 10 support. However, this surge may be short-lived, as inventory levels are likely to stabilize in the next few weeks. The impact of the US tariffs is expected to dampen the growth momentum in 2025.

Apple and Lenovo delivered strong performances in the quarter, largely due to new product launches and market dynamics. Apple experienced 17% YoY growth in shipments, driven by its AI-capable M4-based MacBook series. Lenovo's 11% growth reflected its expansion into AI-enabled PCs and its diversified product portfolio. Lenovo remained the brand with the largest market share during the quarter. HP and Dell, on the other hand, benefited from the US market pull-ins during the quarter, with 6% and 4% YoY growth respectively, and maintained their second and third places in Q1. We also found that the pull-ins happened for other major brands too ahead of the tariff uncertainty, leading to the market share further consolidating around major brands.

Lenovo ThinkPad P14s Gen6 Leaks With 12-core AMD Strix Point APU

Over the years, we have witnessed plenty of product leaks via webpages that went live well before they were supposed to. Something similar appears to have happened with Lenovo's Malaysian site, granting us a glimpse at the upcoming ThinkPad P14s Gen 6 powered by up to the full-fat 12-core Ryzen AI 9 HX 370 APU. The leaked product specifications, as listed below, reveal that the P14s will support up to a whopping 96 GB of DDR5-5600 memory, although only with the lower-end Ryzen AI 7 PRO 350 and Ryzen AI 5 PRO 340 variants.

Compared to the previous edition ThinkPad P14s with AMD's Ryzen 7 8840HS APU, the highest-end variant with the Ryzen AI 9 HX 370 will undoubtedly be substantially faster in both single and multicore performance. The Radeon 890M iGPU will also handily outperform the 780M, although the difference is unlikely to be earth-shattering. Like its predecessor, the Gen 6 will continue being available with a 2.8K 120 Hz OLED display, with a higher peak brightness of 500 nits and 100% coverage of the DCI-P3 color gamut. The port selection, as can be expected from a ThinkPad, is plenty admirable, packing dual Thunderbolt 4 (with DisplayPort 1.4), HDMI 2.1, Ethernet, dual USB-A, optional nano sim and smart card reader, as well as a headphone jack.

Their "Legion Tower 5i Gen 10" pre-build is advertised as "coming soon," and configurable with GeForce RTX 5070, RTX 5060 Ti and RTX 5060 discrete graphics solutions. Curiously, Lenovo is prepping this model with an "Intel ARL-HX customized HM870" microATX motherboard—implying that the Core Ultra 9 APU (285HX or 275HX) will be soldered on.

Lenovo's NDA-busting product page does not go into as much (GPU-related) detail as HP New Zealand's webstore and Best Buy Canada's listings. Last week, reports focused on a new-generation OMEN 16L compact pre-built series—providing further evidence of GeForce RTX 5060 Ti graphics cards being readied with 16 GB and 8 GB pools of VRAM. Interestingly, TechPowerUp's GPU curator has scrubbed the alleged GeForce RTX 5060 Ti 16 GB model's page from the site's database. VideoCardz has trained its expert eye on the Legion Tower 5i Gen 10 model's spec sheet and promotional imagery—their investigation put a spotlight on Lenovo's pre-rendered mock-up of a dual-fan card design that sports a single 8-pin power connector. In the recent past, AIB insiders have alluded to several custom models being configured with this older standard. VideoCardz noted that the forthcoming Legion pre-build is listed with "limited DisplayPort 1.4 support." This could be a pre-release mistake (based on placeholder material), or an indication of NVIDIA's cheaper GeForce RTX 50-series options arriving without DisplayPort 2.1 capabilities.

Server Market Revenue Increased 91% During the Q4 2024, NVIDIA Continues Dominating the GPU Server Space

According to the International Data Corporation (IDC) Worldwide Quarterly Server Tracker, the server market reached a record $77.3 billion dollars in revenue during the last quarter of the year. This quarter showed the second highest growth rate since 2019 with a year-over-year increase of 91% in vendor revenue. Revenue generated from x86 servers increased 59.9% in 2024Q4 to $54.8 billion while Non-x86 servers increased 262.1% year over year to $22.5 billion.

Revenue for servers with an embedded GPU in the fourth quarter of 2024 grew 192.6% year-over-year and for the full year 2024, more than half of the server market revenue came from servers with an embedded GPU. NVIDIA continues dominating the server GPU space with over 90% of the total shipments with and embedded GPU in 2024Q4. The fast pace at which hyperscalers and cloud service providers have been adopting servers with embedded GPUs has fueled the server market growth which has more than doubled in size since 2020 with revenue of $235.7 billion dollars for the full year 2024.

Lenovo Shows Custom Legion GeForce RTX 5090D and RTX 5080 Graphics Cards

Lenovo has listed two custom Legion GPUs designed specifically for its Legion 9000K gaming systems. These models—the RTX 5090D and RTX 5080—are available exclusively in the Chinese market and are not intended for the DIY segment. The "D" designation in the RTX 5090D model signifies that the component adheres to specific regulatory standards required in China, hence Lenovo choosing it for their China-exclusive systems. Both GPUs incorporate a cooling solution that spans four expansion slots and utilizes three fans, complemented by CNC-machined metal shrouds and full backplates. While detailed parameters such as core and memory clock speeds have not been disclosed, the two models differ in their GPU architectures: the RTX 5090D is built around the larger GB202 die, and the RTX 5080 uses the smaller GB203 silicon.

Both cards employ a single 16-pin power connector and are expected to operate at standard factory settings without factory overclocking dialed in yet. But with a massive cooler configuration, it should be an easy thing to do. Regarding computational capability, the RTX 5090D delivers up to 2,375 TOPS, supporting gaming tasks and localized AI processing. These GPUs are integrated within systems powered by Intel's Core Ultra 200K series processors. System configurations start at 22,499 RMB (approximately $3,100) for units featuring the RTX 5080 paired with a Core Ultra 7 265K processor and 32 GB of RAM. In contrast, configurations with the RTX 5090D, Core Ultra 9 285K processor, and 64 GB of RAM are priced at 41,999 RMB (roughly $5,820). Lenovo has also indicated that mid-range RTX 5070 variants are planned for future releases and that final production units may vary slightly from the initial promotional renders of these cards.

Lenovo Debuts Solar-Powered 14-Inch Yoga Laptop at MWC 2025

At MWC 2025 in Barcelona, Lenovo debuted its latest prototype laptop that integrates solar charging capabilities directly into the lid. The "Yoga Solar PC Concept" utilizes photovoltaic cells with a 24% conversion efficiency rate and implements "Back Contact Cell" technology that positions mounting hardware behind the cells to maximize absorption surface. The device measures 15 mm thick and weighs 1.22 kg. The system employs a Dynamic Solar Tracking mechanism that monitors real-time power generation and automatically adjusts charging parameters to optimize energy capture regardless of lighting conditions. According to Lenovo's testing, 20 minutes of direct sunlight exposure generates sufficient power for approximately one hour of video playback.

Lenovo chose an unspecified Intel Core Ultra processor generation for the platform base, up to 32 GB RAM, 1 TB storage, and a 14-inch OLED display. Three USB-C ports allow for conventional charging when solar power is unavailable. Lenovo is also developing a separate Solar Power Kit accessory for Yoga devices. This peripheral includes a detachable solar panel with USB-C connectivity that charges external battery packs, which can later power laptops or other devices. No release timeline or pricing information has been announced for either product. However, this is a welcome development in the laptop space, which has maintained the tried-and-true formula of laptop design and functionality.
