MSI Shows Off MAG Tomahawk X570 Wi-Fi Motherboard

The Tomahawk line of motherboards by MSI gained popularity in recent times on the back of high cost/performance and an aspirational feature-set for its price, but has seen competition from the likes of ASUS TUF Gaming. When MSI launched its AMD X570 chipset motherboards, a Tomahawk product was MIA. The company finally got around to one, with the MAG X570 Tomahawk Wi-Fi. In its product-stack, MSI appears to be positioning this product above the MPG X570 Gaming Plus, but a notch below the MPG X570 Gaming Edge Wi-Fi and the popular X570 Gaming Pro Carbon. The Tomahawk is equipped with a visibly bigger chipset fan-heatsink than the Gaming Plus, and a more powerful CPU VRM solution, with a 14-phase setup. You also get chunky VRM heatsinks, a metal I/O area shroud, and an integrated I/O shield.

The MAG Tomahawk X570 upstages competition with networking: 2.5 GbE wired Ethernet and 802.11ax (Wi-Fi 6). The 2.5 GbE interface is pulled by a Realtek 8125B-CG controller, while the WLAN is Intel AX200-family. Other noteworthy specs include two M.2 PCI-Express gen 4.0 slots with heatsinks on both; and a premium ALC1220-based onboard audio solution (which is a segment-first for the Arsenal Gaming series). The MAG Tomahawk X570 Wi-Fi will begin selling within Q1-2020, priced around $180.

Ryzen Threadripper 3970X Overclocked to 5.75 GHz

Wrap your head around a 32-core/64-thread HEDT processor with a mental 5.752 GHz overclock. That's what TSAIK achieved, by with 58.0X multiplier (pulling a 99.12 MHz base-clock), 1.1 V core voltage, and other clock domains kept stable. This amounts to a staggering 55 percent overclock over the 3.70 GHz nominal clock for the 3970X. The motherboard used is an MSI Creator TRX40, while the memory was 16 GB, defaulting at 2133 MHz DDR. A liquid nitrogen evaporator was used to cool the chip. The overclock was validated to CPU-Z database.

MSI, in this case, seems to have bet on a slight redesign of their previously-released RX 580 Armor and Armor MK2.

Changed is the color scheme - MSI went full black on this one. There's also a redesigned PCB, a redesigned I/O bracket (which keeps four display connectors), and a new cooler shroud. The heatsink's surface area also seems to have been increased, which should provide lower operating temperatures (anything beyond that, such as higher overclockability and longer lifespan, are speculations). The redesigned Armor keeps the single 8-pin PCIe power connector. No other details are available at time of writing.

MSI is ready with its premium Gaming X and affordable Ventus XS custom board designs for NVIDIA's upcoming GeForce GTX 1660 Super GPU. These boards are largely identical to the GTX 1660 Ti down to the PCB design, as the GTX 1660 Super is essentially a GTX 1660 with GDDR6 memory instead of GDDR5, yet positioned a notch below the GTX 1660 Ti owing to fewer CUDA cores (1,408 vs. 1,536).

The MSI GTX 1660 Super Gaming X retains its brushed metal finish, RGB LED embellishments, and premium appeal of the GTX 1660 Ti Gaming X. The Ventus XS, too retains its compact dimensions. This time around, though, MSI gave the plastic back-plate a faux brushed-aluminium finish. The Ventus XS comes in a standard variant that sticks to NVIDIA-reference clock-speeds, and an OC Edition with a mild factory-overclock. The Gaming X has the highest factory-overclock from MSI for this SKU.
