Cisco Announces Intent to Acquire ThousandEyes

Cisco today announced its intent to acquire privately held ThousandEyes, Inc. headquartered in San Francisco, CA. ThousandEyes' Internet and Cloud intelligence platform delivers deep visibility and insights into the digital delivery of applications and services over the Internet.

The last few years have seen a rapid acceleration of Cloud adoption, widespread use of SaaS applications, and a reliance on the Internet and networks outside of enterprise control. This increased dependence on the Internet and other third-party infrastructures, compounded over the past several months during the COVID-19 pandemic, substantially reduces the ability for enterprise IT teams to predict, visualize and control operational behavior. The result is often a chaotic and unmanageable IT environment that makes issue resolution a time-consuming ordeal that can potentially have a massive impact on customer experience, brand reputation and revenue.

Huawei Ready to Enter PC Industry with Custom OS and Processor

Since the debut of its plans to create a custom Operating System and make itself independent from everyone, Huawei has been working hard to bring that idea to life. Creating custom software and custom hardware solutions, Huawei's engineers have been rather busy. And now, Huawei aims to be the new player in the Chinese PC industry, replacing the already available solutions that have foreign technology with potential backdoors that could represent a threat to Chinese information security. So to prepare for that, Huawei is creating a custom OS called HarmonyOS that will accompany custom hardware solutions.

The HarmonyOS was announced last year at Huawei Developer Conference 2019 (HDC 2019) as a project Huawei is working on. However, it seems like that project will become some of the more important things the company is working on. A well-known person for tipping about the latest industry news on Weibo said that Huawei is preparing to launch custom PCs very soon for domestic (Chinese) audience. Huawei is supposedly working with major cities and regions in China to supply its infrastructure with new solutions. And what those solutions will be? Well, Huawei plans to combine the HarmonyOS with its already launched Kunpeng Desktop Board.

Gryphon Shows off Their Security-focused Mesh Networking Routers at CES 2019

Gryphon Online Safety, Inc. is a 2-year old company that, by its very name, hints strongly towards the product lineup and design philosophy. We met the CEO and CTO of the company at their booth at CES 2019, and were greeted by the Gryphon router that was built with content filtering and online secutiry in mind. They have nearly five decades of combined experience behind the Gryphon, leveraging manufacturing in China, software teams in India, and customer support in the USA to deliver a user-friendly router and mobile app which also supports mesh networking.

The Gryphon was designed with the intention of fitting in a living room, with the sharp looks akin more to a trophy or showpiece. It definitely caught our eye, especially given how hard it is to carve out a unique look with routers these days without looking like an alien artifact. The router is rated for AC3000 operation with one 2.4 GHz band for Wireless N and two 5 GHz bands for Wireless AC networking, with the second 5 GHz band being a dedicated backhaul akin to the NETGEAR Orbi to make full use of the mesh networking feature without losing performance when connected to the satellite unit. The mobile app especially makes it very handy for the average end user to allow, and control, content to their desire. We will have a full review of the Gryphon networking solution on TechPowerUp sooner than later, but for those interested, there is more information to be found on their website. The Gryphon retails for ~$215 for a single unit, and $400 for a twin-pack.

ASUS Rolls Out "Gaming Station" GS50

ASUS announced the Gaming Station GS50, which its product managers refer to as a "gaming station," so someone at big oil can blow steam off on Battlefield after a long day's work exploring shale (at least that's a use-case we can imagine). The GS50 is powered by an Intel Xeon W-2155 processor, which is a 10-core/20-thread chip clocked at 3.30 GHz to 4.50 GHz (turbo), packing 13.75 MB of L3 cache. This processor is essentially a Core i9-7900X with Xeon-exclusive features such as up to 512 GB ECC memory support, MPX, TXT, Boot Guard, etc. ASUS is offering RDIMM memory options all the way up to 512 GB.

Adding to its "gaming" credentials is NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2080 graphics. Quadro RTX series is not even provided as an option. For storage, you get a 512 GB M.2-2280 SATA 6 Gbps SSD, and a 3 TB HDD for recovery and cold storage. Among the storage expansion options are additional M.2-NVMe slots, five more SATA ports, and a U.2 port. Networking includes two 1 GbE interfaces pulled by two Intel "server class" Ethernet controllers. A 700W 80 Plus Gold-certified PSU powers the machine. ASUS didn't reveal pricing.

NETGEAR Launches Unmanaged Switches with Power Over Ethernet Options

NETGEAR , Inc., the leading provider of networking devices for small businesses, the smart home and online game play, is launching new 16-port and 8-port Gigabit Ethernet Unmanaged Switches with the industry's first flexible Power over Ethernet (PoE) integrated technology. Businesses or even home offices needing affordable solutions with a reasonable PoE budget can now easily deploy denser PoE+ devices and high-power PoE+ devices connected to a single switch, for energy efficiency as well as space and cost savings.

For small businesses and in an increasing number of smart homes, it has become common for the network to be burdened with VoIP phones, IP security cameras, video-over-IP endpoints, sensors, LED lighting, secure access door locks, and other IoT devices. The dense proximity of these devices requires network switches capable of supporting PoE so you can add power-hungry devices to the network with the convenience of a single wire for power AND connectivity. Wave 2 802.11ac wireless access points and pan-tilt-zoom HD surveillance cameras with features such as night vision and built-in motion tracking also require PoE+ power, increasing the power demands on switches supplying PoE.
