Opera Unveils Opera One, an Entirely Redesigned Browser

Opera is unveiling Opera One today. Opera One is the early access version of a completely redesigned browser that is planned to replace the flagship Opera browser for Windows, MacOS, and Linux later this year. Based on Modular Design, Opera One transforms the way you interact with your browser, delivering a liquid navigation experience which is more intuitive to the user. With today's release, Opera One also becomes the first major Chromium-based browser with a multithreaded compositor that brings the UI to life like never before. Opera One also introduces Tab Islands, a new, more intuitive way of interacting with and managing multiple tabs. This news from the company comes just weeks after announcing its first generative AI features, including AI Prompts, as well as access to ChatGPT and ChatSonic in the sidebar.

Introducing the first implementation of Modular Design
Opera has a history of reinventing itself to address the changing needs of its users as well as the evolving nature of the web. With Opera One, the browser has been redesigned according to Modular Design. The new design philosophy, which is being presented today for the first time, will allow Opera to over time build a more powerful and feature-rich browser that is ready for a generative AI-based future. The Opera browser is thus beginning its metamorphosis into a browser that will dynamically adapt to the user's needs by bringing only the key features to the foreground: the relevant modules within Opera One will adjust automatically based on context, providing the user with a more liquid and effortless browsing experience.

Opera goes live with generative AI tools in Desktop browser and Opera GX

As generative AI tools continue to reshape the digital landscape, Opera is integrating AI capabilities into its desktop browsers. Shipping today in Opera and Opera GX are AI Prompts and sidebar integration of the popular GPT-based services ChatGPT and ChatSonic. Users can explore AIGC (AI-generated content) tools within Opera and Opera GX.

"AIGC is a game-changer for web browsing. Our goal is to use these technologies to give our users new browsing superpowers - reimagining how they learn, create, and research," said Joanna Czajka, Product Director at Opera.

IBM Unveils Breakthrough 127-Qubit Quantum Processor

IBM today announced its new 127-quantum bit (qubit) 'Eagle' processor at the IBM Quantum Summit 2021, its annual event to showcase milestones in quantum hardware, software, and the growth of the quantum ecosystem. The 'Eagle' processor is a breakthrough in tapping into the massive computing potential of devices based on quantum physics. It heralds the point in hardware development where quantum circuits cannot be reliably simulated exactly on a classical computer. IBM also previewed plans for IBM Quantum System Two, the next generation of quantum systems.

Quantum computing taps into the fundamental quantum nature of matter at subatomic levels to offer the possibility of vastly increased computing power. The fundamental computational unit of quantum computing is the quantum circuit, an arrangement of qubits into quantum gates and measurements. The more qubits a quantum processor possesses, the more complex and valuable the quantum circuits that it can run.

Opera Integrates Web Mining Protection in Their Latest Opera 50 RC

Opera has announced that the latest, Release Candidate (RC) version of their web browser now incorporates an innovative cryptocurrency mining protection baked in. Opera has been one of the most versatile browsers for some time now, offering integrated VPN, AdBlocker, and bandwidth reduction on its releases. Some issues, such as measure of lacking visibility against Firefox and Chrome, and performance that's seldom in the top spot from the available offerings in the market, has kept this browser from being the go-to option for users. Now, the opera team have again innovated, by integrating a cryptocurrency web mining blocker onto the latest release.

The solution, dubbed NoCoin, works within the confines of the integrated AdBlocking protection, with extended lists that eliminates cryptocurrency mining scripts that "overuse your device's computing ability." To enable the mining protection, users need to go to Settings or Preferences. The NoCoin (Cryptocurrency) setting can be found in Recommended lists of ad filters in the Block ads page. "With NoCoin turned on, pages embedded with cryptocurrency mining scripts will be blocked in a similar way our mechanism blocks ads," said Opera desktop QA Kornelia Mielczarczyk. This is all well and good, but some extensions already offer this kind of protection, and with Google adding their own AdBlocking solution to Chrome in early 2018, this feature exclusivity likely won't remain an additional arrow in Opera's feature quiver for long.

Adobe Working on Sandboxed Flash Player for Firefox

Adobe is working on a new sandboxed version of the Flash Player browser plugin for Firefox. The move will make it tougher to compromise a system's security using malicious Shockwave Flash objects. The new plugin for Firefox (and other browsers like Opera, which rely on the common Netscape Plugin Wrapper model of browser plugins), will work essentially similar to the Flash Player Google Chrome ships with, which works in a "Protected Mode". When "sandboxed" Shockwave Flash objects in webpages will work as separate processes, with much lower privileges than the actual user, the user's machine environment will be kept abstract to it. Adobe has already redesigned the browser plugin of its Reader X (PDF viewer) to work this way, and hasn't seen a significant successful exploit since November, last year.

Khronos Releases Final WebGL 1.0 Specification, Brings Accelerated 3D without Plugins

The Khronos Group released the final WebGL 1.0 specification to enable hardware-accelerated 3D graphics in HTML5 Web browsers without the need for plug-ins. WebGL defines a JavaScript binding to OpenGL ES 2.0 to allow rich 3D graphics within a browser on any platform supporting the industry-standard OpenGL or OpenGL ES graphics APIs. WebGL has the support of major silicon and browser vendors including Apple, Google, Mozilla and Opera with multiple browsers already shipping with WebGL implementations including the beta releases for Mozilla Firefox 4.0, all channels of Google Chrome 9.0, an Opera preview build, and Apple Mac OS Safari nightly builds.

WebGL leverages the pervasive availability of OpenGL ES 2.0 graphics on almost all browser-capable desktop, mobile and embedded platforms and the recent developments in Web technology including the massive increases in JavaScript performance. The ability for Web developers to directly access OpenGL-class graphics directly from JavaScript, and freely mix 3D with other HTML content, will enable a new wave of innovation in Web gaming, educational and training applications and graphically rich user interfaces to make the Web more enjoyable, productive and intuitive.

Safari 4 Beta Tested, Gives IE7 a Sound Thrashing at JavaScript Performance

There is a valid reason behind why Safari is growing in browser market-share, apart from the fact that iPhone carries it: it is arguably the fastest browser there is. The fourth beta version that surfaced earlier this week went a few notches ahead of Firefox (Minefield) 3.2a1 and Google Chrome in a review conducted by CNet, to take the top-sport for the fastest web-browser. Internet Explorer (IE) versions 7 and 8, Opera 9.6, Firefox 3, Chrome, Firefox(Minefield) 3.1 Alpha 1 and Safari 4 were put through JavaScript tests using the SunSpider suite. The PC was equipped with a Core 2 Duo processor running at 2.10 GHz. Safari 4 beta gave IE 7 a sound thrashing at the test, emerging 42 times faster. The performance difference between the two were so vast that the reviewers had to prepare a seperate graph without IE 7 so there could be more resolution in the charts showing the differences between the rest of the contendors. Then again, one must take into account the fact that Chrome and Firefox (Minefield) 3.2 weren't all that behind Safari 4 beta, only a few notches. The scores are denoted by render time in terms of milliseconds. Lesser the better. The scores stand at:
  • Safari 4 (Total time: 910 ms)
  • Mozilla Minefield 3.2a1 (1,136 ms)
  • Google Chrome (1,177 ms)
  • Firefox 3 (3,250 ms)
  • Opera 9.6 (4,076 ms)
  • Internet Explorer 8 (5,839 ms)
  • Internet Explorer 7 (39,026 ms)

Opera 10 Sneak Peek

Today, Opera Software introduces the first look at Opera 10. An alpha version of Opera 10 is now available here. This release gives people a taste of Opera's new rendering engine, Opera Presto 2.2 - the foundation of all future Opera 10 products. Opera Presto 2.2 offers approximately a 30-percent-faster browsing experience as compared to Opera Presto 2.1, introduced in Opera 9.5 in June 2008. Opera has fine-tuned its standards support and, as a result, Opera 10 alpha achieves an Acid3 100/100 Test score. This version also provides Web developers with a whole range of new technologies for building better Web sites.
