EA Exec Shoots Down Battlefield 6 on Steam Deck—Other Handhelds Allowed

Following the recent Battlefield 6 multiplayer showcase that confirmed the existence of a UGC platform for the new shooter, EA's executive vice president, Vince Zampella, confirmed in an interview with PCGamesN that Battlefield 6 will not receive Steam Deck support. According to the executive, "It does not work on Steam Deck. I think there are some non-Steam-Deck handheld platforms that it will work on, probably, right? But I don't think, you know, it's probably not the best way to play the game."

This suggests that the reason for the lack of Steam Deck support comes down to incompatibility with SteamOS, rather than hardware limitations. The presumption is thus that Battlefield 6's EA anti-cheat still won't adopt Linux support. According to ProtonDB, 27% of Steam's current top 100 games work basically flawlessly with Valve's Proton compatibility layer, with an additional 52% receiving a "Gold" rating, which means the game runs basically perfectly using Proton with a little tweaking. Other gaming giants have also recently announced their intention to include Steam Deck and Linux compatibility in their upcoming titles, with Ubisoft being one notable example in recent months.

Battlefield 6 Leaks Tip Launch Price as Rumored Beta Test Dates Surface

EA recently confirmed that it has no intention of increasing prices for its AAA gaming experiences, and that claim has just been backed up by leaks that Battlefield 6 will launch with a starting price of $69.99. According to prolific leaker, @billbil_kun on X, the new shooter will be available in both digital and physical versions for PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series, with identical pricing across all three platforms. Battlefield 6 digital edition will cost $69.99, while the newly added physical edition will cost $99.99.

Additional reports out of Insider Gaming also point to upcoming closed and open beta tests for Battlefield 6 in August. The first, the closed beta test, will run from August 7-8, while the open beta will take place on August 9-10. There will also supposedly be a second open beta from August 14-17. The reports indicate that access to the beta tests will be limited to those who pre-order the game. EA and DICE have scheduled a "Battlefield 6 Official Multiplayer Gameplay Reveal Event" livestream on YouTube for July 31 at 11:30 AM PT (8:30 PM CEST), and it seems likely that the beta dates will be announced during this livestream. Battlefield 6 is slated to launch on October 10, 2025.

Wuchang: Fallen Feathers Dev Seemingly Disabled Native Render Resolution on Certain Hardware To Fix Performance Issues

Last week, we reported on Wuchang: Fallen Feathers and its launch that was ruined by poor optimization and abysmal performance on even high-end PCs. In response to the plummeting Steam review score, 505 Games put out a patch that was supposed to improve performance by reducing RAM and VRAM usage, optimizing performance on low-end GPUs, and addressing performance and stability bugs. This patch was followed by Patch 1.4, which supposedly addressed performance on "certain hardware models." A recent analysis by Daniel Owen on YouTube has revealed that the Wuchang: Fallen Feathers 1.4 patch may have removed native rendering from the game entirely, effectively forcing players to use upscaling, even when the resolution scale is set to 100%.

As Owen demonstrates in his YouTube video, the only change in the patch notes that mentions sampling resolutions reads: "Supersampling resolution limits have been adjusted on select GPU models to prevent unintended performance degradation." This seems to imply that the option to enable higher resolution scaling options was removed for lower-end GPUs, but that may not be the case. As Owen demonstrates, before the 1.4 update, performance scales predictably with the oversampling resolution slider—if you drop the resolution below 100%, the performance increases, regardless of whether the game is using FSR, DLSS, or TSR. After updating the game to the 1.4 patch, there is a significant performance boost at the same 100% resolution scale, and the running theory is that the developers are simply capping the render resolution at somewhere below native, regardless of which settings the player enables in the graphics options. This is demonstrated when Owen drops the resolution scale to similar levels as he tested prior, and performance is just 2 FPS higher than what was observed before the update on TSR and FSR, with DLSS getting identical performance in one instance.

ASUS 30th Anniversary Gamescom Giveaways Hint at New Astral RTX 5080 Launching on August 19

In the lead-up to Gamescom 2025, which is slated to kick off on August 20, with a press event on August 19, ASUS is teasing a new product launch and a series of giveaways for the event. Information obtained by VideoCardz points to a 30th Anniversary Edition ASUS NVIDIA GeForce RTX 5080, however, the website HTML code suggests that the "new ROG graphics card" in question may simply be in reference to the ASUS ROG Astral RTX 5080 Hatsune Miku Edition. As VideoCardz points out, this might simply be a placeholder link, because ASUS hinted in a post on X that it has "got something really special cooking" for Gamescom 2025.

ASUS is also planning giveaways for a host of its gaming components and peripherals, including an AMD Ryzen 7 9800X3D bundle with an ROG Crosshair x870E motherboard as well as the aforementioned GPU and TUF Gaming Hatsune Miku Edition peripherals, an ASUS ROG Strix OLED gaming monitor, ROG Falcata split Hall-effect gaming keyboard, ROG Harpe II Ace gaming mouse, the ROG Strix GS-BE18000 gaming router, and an ROG Ryuo IV 360 AIO CPU cooler. More information on the ASUS 30th Anniversary giveaway page supports the idea that a new RTX 5080 Astral GPU is coming on August 19.

Keychron Explains Recent Q Max and V Max Issues: Apparent Manufacturing Defects Caused Loose Switches

In recent months, there have been an increasing amount of reports from users on the r/Keychron subreddit detailing issues with Keychron's high-end Q and V Max mechanical keyboard line-ups. Reports included recurring issues like double key presses, keys not registering, and unpredictable chatter on some keys. A handful of technically savvy users started speculating that the issues these keyboards presented were likely being caused by cold solder joints on the hot-swap sockets causing the hot-swap sockets to come loose and lose contact with the PCB. However, Keychron this week addressed the complaints in a statement on Reddit, explaining that it had seen these reports, conducted internal testing to isolate the root cause, and addressed these issues at a manufacturing level.

In the post and an article linked in the post, Keychron explains that the input issues were being caused by the switch plate becoming warped and essentially pushing the switches out of the hot-swap sockets. This causes intermittent contact with the hot-swap sockets, and could result in keys not registering or multiple inputs registering on every key press. To correct this issue, Keychron is advising owners who experience these issues to take their keyboards apart and reseat all of the switches firmly in the PCB sockets by pressing the plate and PCB assembly firmly between their hands with the switches installed. If issues continue, the brand recommends disassembling the keyboard entirely, inspecting the plate for warping, and carefully straightening it manually. Keychron says that, beyond the recommended fixes mentioned in the article, it is also handling individual customer reports on a case-by-case basis, although this approach and the corrective steps do not seem to be sitting well with the community and the brand's customer base.

Intel CEO Confirms SMT To Return to Future CPUs

Intel today announced its Q2 results, and it was a bit of a mixed bag, with the earnings largely down and projections showing little overall growth for the foreseeable future. Ahead of this announcement, though, Intel's CEO, Lip Bu Tan, sent an internal memorandum to employees, which has since been made public, detailing his plan to "step in the right direction." While much of this revolved around AI, its foundry business, and job cuts—a 15% cut in overall head count and a 50% cut in management layers—one of the more relevant takeaways for the PC enthusiast community is that Intel will be reintroducing SMT or Hyper-Threading to its processors in the future.

It's unclear whether the change to reintroduce SMT, aka as "Hyper-Threading", will only apply to the data center, since it was only called out when talking about that segment, but generally the desktop and data center are not too far apart in terms of architecture, so it stands to reason that if SMT returns to Intel's data center CPUs, it will likely make its way back to the desktop, too. Intel first started moving away from Hyper-Threading around the 12th-Gen CPUs, around the same time as the company moved towards asymmetrical CPU designs, first enabling SMT on only performance cores and later ditching Hyper-Threading entirely in the 15th-Gen CPUs. It's already clear that reintroducing SMT won't happen with Nova Lake, or likely even its successor, and as we've recently shown in our testing, it isn't always a necessary feature for high performance—especially in gaming—but most PC enthusiasts would probably rather have it and be able to disable it than outright not have the option.

Endgame Gear Accidentally Spread Malware in Its OP1w 4k v2 Mouse Configuration Tool

A recent blunder by Endgame Gear reveals why it might be best to opt for gaming peripherals that don't make you download or install any software in order to configure your hardware. Recently, a Reddit user u/Admirable-Raccoon597 discovered that the driver for the Endgame Gear OP1w 4K V2 gaming mouse, which we reviewed in June, was infected with malware. Specifically, it had installed an API commonly used for key logging. The infected configuration tool was seemingly on the site for as long as two weeks—from June 26th to July 9th—so anyone who downloaded the tool between those dates may have unwittingly infected their system.

The malware, which is known as XRed or the Synaptics Worm, reportedly created a hidden folder on user PCs, which is how it was found by the Reddit user in the first place. According to Malpedia, XRed "exfiltrates sensitive system information—such as the MAC address, username, and computer name—which is sent via SMTP to hardcoded email addresses. It also incorporates keylogging functionality through keyboard hooking techniques." To its credit, Endgame Gear removed the affected download immediately after being notified by another Redditor via Discord, effectively ensuring that nobody else who downloads the tool should be infected by the same link again. This also confirms that Endgame Gear was as much the victim here, since it was not deliberately infecting users with malware.

Borderlands 4 To Launch On Switch 2 Just 2 Weeks After PC and Console

Borderlands 4 was initially meant to launch on September 23, but that launch date was later moved up to September 12, although speculation about the reason for the change in release date ran rampant. However, through all this, aside from confirmation that the game would launch on the Nintendo Switch, there was no hint at when it would arrive on the handheld gaming console. Now, however, Gearbox and 2K Games have confirmed via the official Borderlands account on X that Borderlands 4 will launch on Nintendo Switch 2 on October 3, 2025. That's a little over two weeks after the PC and living-room console launch.

In the replies, the game studio and publisher also confirmed that full cross-play and four-player co-op will be available at launch for the Switch 2. All four vault hunters will also be available to play at launch. What's still not clear, though, is whether the handheld version of the game will feature cross-platform save and progression. It's also unclear how well the game will run on the comparably underpowered game console, especially since the PC version calls for at least an NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2070. Previously, the Borderlands community raised concerns about the level of completeness of the game when Gearbox announced that certain features would only arrive in the new looter-shooter after the launch because other features had taken priority, however it seems as though the development team is firing on all cylinders to get the game ready for launch on all platforms.

2XKO Gets Official September Closed Beta Launch As League of Legends Studio Lines Up for 2025 Full Launch

The last time we checked in with Riot Games's upcoming tag-team fighting game based on the League of Legends universe and characters, 2XKO was still in closed alpha testing, and Riot was teasing a new closed alpha period, encouraging players to get in on the action. Now, the game studio has taken to social media platform X to share that 2XKO will be entering closed beta on September 9, 2025. The closed beta will be invite-only and is currently only available to PC players, and players can apply to the closed beta via Riot Games's website. Riot says that 2XKO will remain online "from here on out," and that the open beta signals the start of the full roll-out. Players who have already played the closed alpha version of the game do not need to reapply for access, and players who already have access to the game can invite their friends along for the ride.

Alongside the announcement of the closed beta release, Riot also released a gameplay trailer for Vi, character who recently became popular because of the Arcane TV series adaptation. In the trailer, Vi shows off her classic brawler fighting style, which makes full use of her iconic gauntlets to dish out hard-hitting punches and flashy combos. 2XKO was initially slated to launch fully to PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series platforms sometime in 2025, but with only three months between the closed beta launch and the end of the year, it's unclear if this is still the plan. If the full release is still planned for 2025, it seems as though Riot Games has plenty of confidence in the game's current state. The game studio does seem to be releasing new characters quite frequently, with Vi representing the eighth champion in the roster.

3Q25 NAND Flash Contract Prices Projected to Rise 5-10%; Weak Smartphone Demand Limits eMMC and UFS Growth

TrendForce's latest investigations find that the NAND Flash market has seen significant improvement in supply-demand balance following production cuts and inventory reduction in the first half of 2025. As suppliers shift production capacity toward higher-margin products, the overall supply in circulation has tightened.

On the demand side, increased enterprise investment in AI and mass shipments of NVIDIA's next-generation Blackwell chips have provided strong support. Looking ahead to the third quarter, average NAND Flash contract prices are projected to rise by 5% to 10%. However, due to an uncertain outlook for smartphone demand in the second half of the year, price increases for eMMC and UFS products are expected to be more modest.

Intel Plans "Arrow Lake Refresh" for H2 2025 with Higher Clocks and Upgraded NPU

According to ZDNet Korea's sources familiar with the matter, Intel will release the "Arrow Lake Refresh" CPU family in the second half of this year. While no exact timeline is given, we can expect to hear more about these CPUs in the coming weeks, and for the rumor mill to intensify. The new refresh generation will introduce slight frequency adjustments, including an increased base clock and maximum boost clock, while also incorporating a faster NPU. A base clock increase, paired with a boost to maximum core clock, will give Arrow Lake Refresh a significant advantage in gaming performance. Keeping the same LGA1851 socket will extend the support for the current platform for one more generation too, until "Nova Lake-S" arrives.

Given that Intel attempted an IPO for a limited set of gamers, we could see a more widespread adoption of a similar approach. As a reminder, on the CPU side, IPO fine-tunes P-core and E-core frequencies, ring-bus speeds, the UPI interconnect, D2D links between tiles, and both PL1 and PL2 power limits. For RAM, IPO raises transfer rates and tightens timings, pushing modules beyond their factory XMP or EXPO profiles. If Arrow Lake Refresh ships with an IPO-equivalent out of the box, gamers will enjoy a significant performance increase, ready to offset some of the early disappointment with the base Arrow Lake. Additionally, Intel will place a new NPU on its IO tile. Using the NPU3 on base Arrow Lake, Intel was unable to meet the basic 40 TOPS requirement for Copilot+ AI PCs. And with NPU4, that TOPS requirement is met, allowing Intel to brand these new processors as AI PC ready.

Steam Deck & Nintendo Switch Dominate Among Gamers Who Use Handhelds

TechPowerUp's team conducted research to find out how the market for handheld consoles performs and where its users are mostly going. The large community poll of 22,649 PC gamers, asking a simple "Do you game on a handheld console?" paints a solid picture of the customer base that a handheld console maker can expect. The majority, at 65.3% of the polled gamers, have chosen the option "No," indicating that two-thirds of PC gamers spend time on their main desktop or notebook PCs without using an additional handheld console. Among the 34.7% of respondents (7,852 votes) who game on the go, Valve's Steam Deck leads with 2,798 votes (35.6%), narrowly edging out Nintendo's Switch at 2,785 votes (35.5%).

ASUS's ROG Ally follows with 913 votes (11.6%), while "Other" devices, including Android emulators, retro‑focused units like the Analogue Pocket, and various mini‑PC handhelds, account for 810 votes (10.3%). Boutique Windows handhelds trail further behind, with the Lenovo Legion Go claiming 280 votes (3.6%) and the MSI Claw 266 votes (3.4%). Out of the entire fleet of these handhelds, only the Nintendo Switch is a real console. Others are mini portable PCs, which can serve functionality far beyond those of a console. Gamers are fond of the added functionality, which is why the Steam Deck, running Linux and Windows-based handhelds from ASUS, MSI, Lenovo, and others, are so popular.
