NVIDIA Grabs Market Share, AMD Loses Ground, and Intel Disappears in Latest dGPU Update

Within the discrete graphics card sector, NVIDIA achieved a remarkable 92% share of the add-in board (AIB) GPU market in the first quarter of 2025, according to data released by Jon Peddie Research (JPR). This represents an 8.5% increase compared to NVIDIA's previous position. By contrast, AMD's share contracted to just 8%, down 7.3 points, while Intel's presence effectively disappeared, falling to 0% after losing 1.2 points. JPR reported that AIB shipments reached 9.2 million units during Q1 2025 despite desktop CPU shipments declining to 17.8 million units. The firm projects that the AIB market will face a compound annual decline of 10.3% from 2024 to 2028, although the installed base of discrete GPUs is expected to grow to 130 million units by the end of the forecast period. By 2028, an estimated 86% of desktop PCs are expected to feature a dedicated graphics card.

NVIDIA's success this quarter can be attributed to its launch of the RTX 50 series GPUs. In contrast, AMD's RDNA 4 GPUs were released significantly later in Q1. Additionally, Intel's Battlemage Arc GPUs, which were launched in Q4 2024, have struggled to gain traction, likely due to limited availability and low demand in the mainstream market. The broader PC GPU market, which includes integrated solutions, contracted by 12% from the previous quarter, with a total of 68.8 million units shipped. Desktop graphics unit sales declined by 16%, while notebook GPUs decreased by 10%. Overall, NVIDIA's total GPU share rose by 3.6 points, AMD's dipped by 1.6 points, and Intel's declined by 2.1 points. Meanwhile, data center GPUs bucked the overall downward trend, rising by 9.6% as enterprises continue to invest in artificial intelligence applications. On the CPU side, notebook processors accounted for 71% of shipments, with desktop CPUs comprising the remaining 29%.

Unreal Engine 5.6 Brings 60 FPS Ray Tracing to Current-Generation Hardware

Epic Games yesterday introduced Unreal Engine 5.6, a significant update designed to ensure that high-fidelity open-world projects maintain a smooth 60 frames-per-second experience on current-generation consoles, high-end PCs, and capable mobile devices by optimizing key rendering and streaming systems, Unreal Engine 5.6 addresses longstanding performance challenges. A central improvement focuses on hardware-accelerated ray tracing for global illumination. The enhanced system shifts critical processing tasks from the CPU to modern GPUs, allowing developers to create more complex lighting scenarios while preserving a locked 60 FPS frame rate. Combined with streamlined Lumen routines, environments gain richer visual detail without sacrificing performance. Content streaming also receives substantial attention. The new Fast Geometry Streaming plugin, currently in experimental mode, enables the loading of large volumes of static geometry on demand without stuttering.

At runtime, asynchronous physics state creation further smooths transitions, ensuring that expansive levels no longer cause unexpected frame drops. Unreal Engine 5.6 also introduces updated device profiles tailored for current consoles and desktop hardware. These profiles automatically adjust graphics settings to meet performance targets, thereby reducing manual configuration and enabling teams to deliver high-quality visuals at stable frame rates. Unreal Engine 5.6 powers the upcoming The Witcher 4 game, which has been demonstrated on the PlayStation 5 console, running at 60 FPS out of the box, with ray tracing. This signals that game optimizations will finally become the norm again, with more powerful hardware delivering higher FPS at higher resolutions in a beautiful, ray-traced open world.

DRAM Revenue Drops 5.5% in the First Quarter of 2025; SK hynix Overtakes Samsung for Top Spot

TrendForce's latest findings reveal that global revenue for the DRAM industry reached US$27.01 billion in 1Q25, marking a 5.5% QoQ decline. This downturn was driven by falling contract prices for conventional DRAM and a contraction in HBM shipment volumes. Samsung's redesign of its HBM3e products eased the HBM production squeezes. This prompted downstream players to clear inventories and extended the price declines seen since 4Q24.

Looking ahead to 2Q25, as PC OEMs and smartphone makers complete inventory corrections and ramp up system production ahead of the 90-day U.S. reciprocal tariff grace period, bit procurement momentum is expected to strengthen significantly. This will drive notable increases in supplier shipment volumes. On the pricing side, TrendForce forecasts a rebound across major application contract prices, with both conventional DRAM and combined DRAM (including HBM) contract prices expected to rise.

Microsoft Details New Windows 11 Update System To Manage App Updates in Addition to Windows Systems and Drivers

Since the introduction of Windows 10, Microsoft has seemingly had ambitions to consolidate as much control over what gets installed on your PC as possible. A perfect example of this is the push towards using the Microsoft Store to install programs instead of relying on .exe files. The company's latest move in this direction sees Windows start handling more than just system updates. Notably, it seems as though Microsoft is planning to use this new system alongside the Store instead of as a replacement for it. These plans come in spite of Windows updates continuing to cause BSOD issues as recently as April.

According to a Microsoft blog on the topic, Windows will soon start handling everything from driver and firmware updates to app updates. Microsoft explains that the current update and management platforms lead to a fragmented ecosystem: "Updates across the Windows ecosystem can feel like a fragmented experience for IT admins managing applications that have their own update orchestrators (e.g., line of business) and commercial management tools that handle their own download, install, restart, and notifications today," adding that the way things are currently handled causes a number of issues, including CPU and network usage spikes, increased support costs, and a poor user experience due to "confusing or conflicting notifications." Microsoft aims to address this by introducing what it calls the Windows Update orchestration platform.

Final The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt Update To Add Console and Cross-Platform Mods

The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt has just turned 10, and CD Projekt Red announced earlier this week that it would be celebrating the game's 10th anniversary with a set of Special Edition Xbox controllers and a slew of live events and memorabilia. Following those announcements, CD Projekt Red has confirmed that it has at least one more content update planned for The Witcher 3. The next, and seemingly the last, The Witcher 3 patch is slated to more or less unify the game's modification scene, bringing cross-platform mod support to the open-world fantasy RPG. CDPR has not confirmed an exact date for the cross-platform mod support update, stating only that it will be available "later this year."

According to a new support page detailing the cross-platform mod support, modders will now be able to publish their mods for The Witcher 3 on a platform called mod.io, which will allow players and modders to upload and download mods across PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC. This will be the only way for consoles to access mods for The Witcher 3, however PC players will still be able to use services like Steam Workshop and Nexus Mods, if they prefer. Unlike with third-party sites, like Nexus Mods, any mods published on mod.io will need to comply with certain guidelines laid out by both the console makers, Sony and Microsoft, and the CD Projekt Red Fan Content Guidelines and User Agreement. For this reason, the mod selection available on consoles will be less expansive than what's available on PC, where restrictions are less of a concern. In a technical sense, the only restrictions modders will face when using mod.io is that any console mods that use scripts will need to be made with CDPR's REDkit mod tools. Meanwhile, texture packs and other bundles can be created using any other tools.

Report: PC and Tablet Shipment Forecast Increases Despite Tariff Uncertainty

After recording strong results in the first quarter of 2025, IDC is increasing its traditional PC forecast for 2025—this comes despite the significant impact that US tariffs have had on its trading partners' market sentiment. Global PC volume is now expected to reach 274 million in 2025, growing +4.1% over the prior year. Beyond 2025, IDC forecasts a slight contraction in 2026 due in part from volume stabilization following Windows 11 migration and to a more difficult comparison given a stronger market in 2025.

"The 90 day pause and tariffs exemption applied to personal computers, combined with a definite level of uncertainty on what will happen after the 90 day pause, is motivating PC manufacturers to seize the moment and ship larger than anticipated volumes in the US," said Jean Philippe Bouchard, research VP with IDC's Worldwide PC Trackers. "However, expectations of worsening macroeconomic conditions around the world and in the US characterized by upward pressures on prices and degrading consumer sentiment, will impact the PC market in the second half of 2025. Nonetheless, IDC expects commercial demand for PCs to be healthy in 2025 as the Windows 11 migration continues steadily."
