PlayStation 5 2024 Revision to Feature Detachable Optical Drive

An upcoming hardware revision of the Sony PlayStation 5 (PS5) that's slated for 2024, reportedly unifies the two current models that the console comes in—one with a Blu-ray drive, and one without. The PS5 currently comes in a model with an optical drive that's popular in markets with slow Internet connections, and targets those who prefer physical copies of their games; while another model completely lacks an optical drive, and is available in markets with fast Internet access, and for those who keep digital libraries of the games they bought.

The 2024 revision would unify the two designs, and feature a modular form-factor, where the optical drive can be optionally purchased (or is part of bundles). This drive slots into the console's body, and connects to it via a 5 Gbps USB-C connection. This way, Sony saves on costs from having to do separate production runs for the two models, and earn some revenue on the ODD. The current digital-only PS5 model comes with a firmware-level restriction that prevents you from plugging in aftermarket USB Blu-ray drives, or even connecting one to its mainboard's SATA interface.

The lifespan of the LED light source is rated at 30,000 hours in ECO mode, which, assuming approximately 4 hours of daily use, equates to approximately 21 years of use without the need for a replacement.

Microsoft: No Plans to Increase Xbox Console Pricing

Considering Sony's recently announced price hike for the PS5 (in whatever soil lies outside the U.S.), the question remained whether Microsoft would follow suit. Sony's claimed reasons for the price hike, stemming from rising inflation and increased production costs, are certainly general and actual enough that they could be true for any business. Yet it seems that Microsoft is either not operating in the same global landscape as Sony - or perhaps the company is merely more willing to shoulder the additional costs so as not to increase pricing.

Speaking with Windows Central, Microsoft clarified that "We are constantly evaluating our business to offer our fans great gaming options. Our Xbox Series S suggested retail price remains at $299 (£250, €300) the Xbox Series X is $499 (£450, €500)." Which is actually a great thing, especially considering that gamers around the world are still underserved in the amount of available PS5 and Xbox consoles that have been made available to buy. The Xbox stock situation has improved faster than that of the PS5, but there are still millions of gamers who haven't been able to get their hands on one or the other - and those still waiting for a PS5 console for no fault of their own are now dealing with increased pricing on an almost 2-year-old console.

For example, you can manually reduce travel distance of the triggers for faster inputs in competitive FPS games or reduce the dead zone for precise throttle control in racing games.

No more twisting your keyboard, hands and shoulders into awkward angles to find a feasible gaming position. The Shrimp can serve you both at home and on travels. At home it will wait patiently for when you hop into gaming.

Tiny keys without proper feedback, hand positioned almost touching the laptop screen, yikes! The Shrimp is definitely something that would fit your backpack.

Overloop will launch first on PC, arriving 26th August on Steam, Epic, GOG, Humble, and other storefronts. The console versions will follow in Q4 2022 (exact release date TBC). AMD Ryzen 7000 Series Processor Runs Phison PCIe 5.0 SSD with Micron 232-Layer NAND Flash

During this year's Flash Memory Summit, Phison, a company known for SSD controllers and now flash drives, demonstrated a system running AMD Ryzen 7000 series processors based on Zen 4 architecture. What is interesting about the shown specification is that the system was running an engineering sample of an upcoming Zen 4-based CPU with the latest storage technologies at impressive speeds. Using a Phison PS5026-E26 SSD controller, also called E26, the PCIe 5.0 SSD is powered by Micron's latest 232-layer TLC NAND flash. This new NAND technology will also bring greater densities to the market by promising higher endurance, higher read/write speeds, and better efficiency.

With AMD's upcoming AM5 platform, support for PCIe 5.0 SSDs is a welcome addition. And we today have some preliminary tests that show just how fast these SSDs can run. In CrystalDiskMark 8.0.4, it achieved over 10 GB/s in both read and write. We know that the E26 controller is capable of 12 GB/s speeds, so more fine-tuning is needed. Being an early sample, we expect final specifications to be better. The system is powered by an engineering sample of a six-core, twelve-threaded Zen 4 CPU running at unknown clocks, codenamed 100-000000593-20_Y. We can expect to see more of this technology once AMD's AM5 platform lands and Phison-powered SSDs hit the shelves in September.
