Pimax, a leading innovator in the Virtual Reality industry, announced two new high-end VR headsets at its Frontier 2024 event, held on YouTube this Monday. The Crystal Super is an ultra-high-end headset, packing 29.5 million pixels and the world's first changeable optical engine, allowing users to swap between QLED and micro-OLED panels. The Crystal Light offers the same 16.6 million pixels as the Pimax Crystal, but is much more budget-friendly, starting from 699 USD. Additionally, Pimax unveiled the 60G Airlink module, which leverages WiGig technology to enable true high-fidelity wireless PCVR.

The Crystal Super represents a substantial leap forward from the highly successful Crystal, with its greatly increased number of pixels, enabling a much larger field of view (FOV) and higher pixels per degree (PPD) simultaneously.

Pimax, a VR hardware manufacturer known for innovative features such as extremely wide field of view and high resolution previously demoed a prototype VR headset at CES 2020 called the Pimax 5K SUPER together with Pimax new flagship headset the Pimax 8K X. Today Pimax is announcing the general availability of the new Pimax 5K SUPER, a refreshed version of the popular Pimax 5K Plus with a wide variety of updates.

The Pimax 5K SUPER features an Industry-leading high refresh rate with a standard 160Hz and even an experimental 180Hz mode along with an updated Modular Audio Strap (MAS) that allows much greater comfort and ease of use. The headset includes the popular Pimax comfort kit face cowling, Pimax nose guard, Pimax ruggedized housing system, and Pimax VR Experience software.

Rebuff Reality a virtual reality accessory company have reached their funding goal of $30,000 USD for their latest product the VR Ears in its first day and is currently sitting at $51,000. The VR Ears are an audio addon for several popular VR headsets including the Rift CV1, Rift S, Quest, original Vive (only with DAS), Vive Pro, Vive Cosmos, PSVR, Valve Index, and some Pimax headsets. The off-ear headphones clip onto the VR headset headband and attach via a 3.5 mm audio connector. The VR Ears are powered by an internal battery with a reported endurance of 8 hours and can be recharged via the onboard USB-C port.

The VR Ears are available via Kickstarter for an early bird price of $89 USD and are estimated to ship in December 2020. Stretch goals exist for $100,000 - $1,000,000 and include free headstraps, carry cases, cables and mics for all backers if reached. The campaign has 29 days to go and will end on May 22nd. As with any Kickstarter make sure your aware of the risks and proceed accordingly.

Pimax is a little-known company based of Shangai and Silicon valley, but it's looking to disrupt the VR HMD Market with its Pimax 8K headset. Let's get this straight right off the bat - we aren't in the presence of a real 8K panel on the Pimax. Instead, each eye is offered a low-persistence, 4K panel angled at 45º - which is more than enough, by anecdotal, subjective evidence, to rid this headset from the dreaded "screen door" effect. Due to the panels' resolution and their angling, Pimax is promising a 200º FOV, which apparently makes it so that your peripheral vision now fully works as if your were headset-less - and is around double the FOV of other headsets such as the Oculus Rift and HTC Vive.

There will be three different models in the next generation of Pimax HMDs (the company has already delivered a product in the form of the Pimax 4K HMD, and sold 30,000 units of that headset, if you're wondering). The Pimax 5K, Pimax 8K, and the Pimax 8K X have all the same features and functionality save for their display and input resolutions. The Pimax 5K has a pair of 2560x1440 panels, and comes cheapest $399 - it's comparable to the Oculus Rift at that price-point. The Pimax 8K has the full-resolution 3840x2160 per-eye displays running at the full 90 Hz refresh rate, but it relies on pixel-doubling to make driving the system easier. Finally, the Pimax 8K X is fundamentally the same headset as the 8K, and its $699 Kickstater price offers (or offered) improved signal processing hardware to allow it to take a full-resolution dual-4K input signal.
