NVIDIA Delays RTX 3070 Ti 16GB and RTX 3080 12GB Launches

NVIDIA has reportedly pushed midlife refreshes to its GeForce RTX 30-series "Ampere" graphics card family to beyond January, according to a report by Igor's Lab. The company was supposed to launch as many as three high-end graphics card SKUs in early-Q1, which include a 16 GB variant of the RTX 3070 Ti, which maxes out the GA104 silicon, a refreshed RTX 3080 12 GB variant, which keeps the CUDA core count of the original RTX 3080, but maxes out the 384-bit memory bus width of the GA102; and the RTX 3090 Ti, which maxes out both memory and CUDA cores on the GA102.

It's being reported that while the RTX 3090 Ti launch is on schedule, with announcements slated for NVIDIA's 2022 International CES presentation; the RTX 3070 Ti 16 GB and RTX 3080 12 GB could be launched only after the Chinese New Year (at least mid-February). The three SKUs, we predict, are designed to calibrate NVIDIA's lineup against a possible refresh of AMD's RDNA2 graphics architecture on the TSMC N6 (6 nm) node, which could allow the company to dial up engine clocks across the board, along with faster 18 Gbps GDDR6 memory, to better compete against the RTX 30-series. AMD is expected to announce these 6 nm GPUs in its CES presentation.

ASUS Intros GeForce RTX 3070 Ti Turbo Graphics Card

ASUS gave the GeForce RTX 3070 Ti its Turbo lateral-blower treatment. Designed for cases with a strict 2-slot limitation, or workstations with multiple add-on cards that have just two slots to spare for the graphics card, the RTX 3070 Ti joins other RTX 30-series "Ampere" cards from ASUS to receive this design. Its cooler features an aluminium channel heatsink that pulls heat from the GPU and memory over a copper plate (although it's not known if this is a vapor chamber plate like on the RTX 3090 Turbo). The lateral blower features double-ball bearings. The card draws power from two 8-pin PCIe power connectors located toward the tail-end (and not on top), these are right next to SSI mount holes that could come handy in workstation cases. The card sticks to NVIDIA-reference clock speeds, with 1770 MHz boost clocks, and 19 Gbps (GDDR6X-effective) memory. The company didn't reveal pricing.

Intel DG2 Graphics Card Leakers Suggest Performance Similar to NVIDIA RTX 3070 Ti, AMD RX 6700

Intel's foray into the discrete GPU market is inching ever closer, and with that diminishing time to market, leaks are getting more common. Renowned leaker TUM_APISAK has shared some performance numbers for Intel's upcoming DG2 graphics card, part of the company's Xe HPG (High Performance Gaming) architecture. In the leak, he also confirmed that Intel is working on a cut-down version of their top offering (which features 4,096 shading units spread across 512 EUs) in the form of a new SKU that offers 448 EUs and 3584 shading units running at 1.8 GHz. That is the actual chip whose relative performance was shared.

According to TUM_APISAK, users should expect the Intel DG2 448 EU graphics card to offer performance that's around the NVIDIA RTX 3070 (5% lower performance for the Intel part) and AMD's RX 6700 XT (8% lower performance for the Intel part). As for the performance of the full-fat 512 EU chip, another leaker, Moore's Law is Dead, expects its performance to fall very slightly lower than the performance offered by NVIDIA's RTX 3080 and AMD's RX 6800/6800 XT. The 512-EU DG2 should also feature higher Boost clocks up to 2.2 GHz. Intel's launch of their Xe HPG graphics architecture is expected to occur before the end of the year, likely starting with the highest performance/highest margin parts, trickling down the product stack through the beginning of 2022. Intel's launch should help in alleviating the lack of available graphics cards, whilst simultaneously breaking a duopoly market.

MSI GeForce RTX 3070 Ti SUPRIM X and Ventus 3X Pictured, 8GB GDDR6X Confirmed, GA104-based

Here are some of the first press-shots of the upcoming MSI GeForce RTX 3070 Ti SUPRIM X and MSI GeForce RTX 3070 Ti Ventus 3X graphics cards. Boxes of the cards confirm 8 GB GDDR6X as the memory configuration of the RTX 3070 Ti. Taking a close look at the press-shot of the RTX 3070 Ti SUPRIM X, and comparing it with those of the already-launched RTX 3070 SUPRIM X and RTX 3080 SUPRIM X, we find that the card looks closer to the RTX 3070 SUPRIM X. This would indicate that MSI is reusing the PCB and cooler design from that card, which means that the RTX 3070 Ti likely maxes out the GA104 silicon, rather than being a heavily cut-down GA102.

A maxed out GA104 would mean 6,144 CUDA cores spread across 48 streaming multiprocessors, 192 tensor cores, 48 RT cores, 192 TMUs, and 96 ROPs. The chip also features a 256-bit wide memory interface, which we now know is capable of handling fast GDDR6X memory. Besides significantly increased memory bandwidth, the RTX 3070 Ti could also dial up GPU clock-speeds. NVIDIA probably finds these changes sufficient to compete with the Radeon RX 6800, which outclasses the RTX 3070 in non-raytraced gaming.

NVIDIA Officially Teases RTX 3080 Ti and RTX 3070 Ti

Months of speculation can now start to come to an end, with NVIDIA themselves officially teasing the soon-to-be-released RTX 3080 Ti and RTX 3070 Ti graphics cards. These come in to supplant NVIDIA's previous category leaders RTX 3080 and RTX 3070, updating and increasing their performance so as to better compete with AMD's RDNA2-powered RX 6900 XT and RX 6800 XT. NVIDIA starting to tease these releases now coincides with the COMPUTEX 2021 keynote event, scheduled for next week.

The RTX 3080 Ti will be powered by the Ampere GA102-225 GPU (10,240 active CUDA cores), paired with 12 GB of GDDR6X memory (an increase from the RTX 3080's 10 GB). The RTX 3070 Ti is to feature the GA104-400 GPU (6,144 active CUDA cores) paired with 8 GB of GDDR6X memory, thus increasing overall memory bandwidth over the RTX 3070's GDDR6-enabled one. The NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3080 Ti and RTX 3070 Ti are thus expected to launch in early June. Reviews for the RTX 3080 Ti are to go live on June 3rd, with the product launch coming on June 4th.
