The SEA Projects Prepare Europe for Exascale Supercomputing

The HPC research projects DEEP-SEA, IO-SEA and RED-SEA are wrapping up this month after a three-year project term. The three projects worked together to develop key technologies for European Exascale supercomputers, based on the Modular Supercomputing Architecture (MSA), a blueprint architecture for highly efficient and scalable heterogeneous Exascale HPC systems. To achieve this, the three projects collaborated on system software and programming environments, data management and storage, as well as interconnects adapted to this architecture. The results of their joint work will be presented at a co-design workshop and poster session at the EuroHPC Summit (Antwerp, 18-21 March, www.eurohpcsummit.eu).

Chinese Exascale Sunway Supercomputer has Over 40 Million Cores, 5 ExaFLOPS Mixed-Precision Performance

The Exascale supercomputer arms race is making everyone invest their resources into trying to achieve the number one spot. Some countries, like China, actively participate in the race with little proof of their work, leaving the high-performance computing (HPC) community wondering about Chinese efforts on exascale systems. Today, we have some information regarding the next-generation Sunway system, which is supposed to be China's first exascale supercomputer. Replacing the Sunway TaihuLight, the next-generation Sunway will reportedly boast over 40 million cores in its system. The information comes from an upcoming presentation for Supercomputing 2023 show in Denver, happening from November 12 to November 17.

The presentation talks about 5 ExaFLOPS in the HPL-MxP benchmark with linear scalability on the 40-million-core Sunway supercomputer. The HPL-MxP benchmark is a mixed precision HPC benchmark made to test the system's capability in regular HPC workloads that require 64-bit precision and AI workloads that require 32-bit precision. Supposedly, the next-generation Sunway system can output 5 ExaFLOPS with linear scaling on its 40-million-core system. What are those cores? We are not sure. The last-generation Sunway TaihuLight used SW26010 manycore 64-bit RISC processors based on the Sunway architecture, each with 260 cores. There were 40,960 SW26010 CPUs in the system for a total of 10,649,600 cores, which means that the next-generation Sunway system is more than four times more powerful from a core-count perspective. We expect some uArch and semiconductor node improvements as well.

Akasa Announces Alucia SC Fan Series

Akasa, has recently released a set of case fans in the Alucia line of products, adding to the Alucia H4. The Alucia SC series come in 120 mm (SC12) and 140 mm (SC14) sizes, which makes these fans great for cases of all shapes and sizes. Perfect for a stealthy PC build with no lighting effects, the fans are jampacked with features; no PC can be complete without Akasa's high performance Alucia SC fans!

The most important factor of a case fan is arguably the airflow - a high level of which can circulate air more efficiently around the PC case. Alucia does not back down, with the powerful, optimized fan blade design producing 56.3 CFM (SC12) and 84.3 CFM (SC14) of airflow; this shows the amazing aerodynamic efficiency possible from these fans.

TOP500 Expands Exaflops Capacity Amidst Low Turnover

The 56th edition of the TOP500 saw the Japanese Fugaku supercomputer solidify its number one status in a list that reflects a flattening performance growth curve. Although two new systems managed to make it into the top 10, the full list recorded the smallest number of new entries since the project began in 1993.

The entry level to the list moved up to 1.32 petaflops on the High Performance Linpack (HPL) benchmark, a small increase from 1.23 petaflops recorded in the June 2020 rankings. In a similar vein, the aggregate performance of all 500 systems grew from 2.22 exaflops in June to just 2.43 exaflops on the latest list. Likewise, average concurrency per system barely increased at all, growing from 145,363 cores six months ago to 145,465 cores in the current list.

Intel Releases mOS - Custom Operating System for HPC

Intel has been focusing its resources on data center and high-performance computing lately and the company has made some interesting products. Today, Intel has released its latest creation - mOS operating system. Created as a research project, Intel has made an OS made for some extreme-scale HPC systems, meaning that the OS is created for hyper scalers and ones alike. The goal of mOS is to deliver a high-performance environment for software with low-noise, scalability, and the concept of lightweight kernels (LWK) that manage the system.. Being based on the Linux kernel, the OS is essentially another distribution, however, it has been modified so it fits the HPC ecosystem the best way. The mOS is a product in the pre-alpha phase, however, it can already be used in supercomputers like ASCI Red, IBM Blue Gene, and others. Intel is aiming to develop a stable release by the time the Aurora exascale system is ready so it can deploy mOS there.

EVGA's RTX 2060 SC, XC, XC Ultra Make an Appearance at CES 2019

EVGA took to CES 2019 to showcase their lineup of NVIDIA's RTX 2060 graphics card. The company showcased their three interpretations of NVIDIA's silicon, with increased performance and/or engineering across the lineup. The RTX 2060 SC is naturally the most "basic" of the three graphics cards, with a single-fan cooling solution and lower clocks than the RTX 2060 XC, which is slightly above it in EVGA's lineup.

The RTX 2060 XC, of course, takes the performance and temperature department home, with its dual fan cooling solution. It says something about manufacturers' design choices that some decided to max out their RTX 2060 with three fans, while others deemed a dual-fan setup as sufficient. Food for thought.
