PhotoFast Readies 4-bay MicroSDHC Reader Stick

PhotoFast, known for everything 'flash memory' in the IT world, is ready with an innovative USB stick, only this one is a 4-slot MicroSD and MicroSDHC card reader called the CR-5500. On one of its sides, the four slots tiny slots are located, which allow easy removal of the memory cards. The devices takes data from the four cards and creates a JBOD (just a bunch of disks) volume. Using four of the highest capacity MicroSDHC cards, the drive can provide 64 GB of storage (16 GB from each card). A cap covers the USB 2.0 interface. The entire unit is slightly bigger than the average USB flash stick, though not too big for a device with up to 64 GB of storage. It is priced at US around $64, package does not include memory cards. Micron Introduces New Line of 34nm Multi-Level Cell NAND for Enterprise Storage

When designing solid-state storage for enterprise applications, standard SLC NAND has been the technology of choice because of its reliability and endurance. But customers are often challenged on how to cost-effectively reach their capacity requirements. Micron Technology, Inc. is meeting customers' requirements by announcing today that it has leveraged its award-winning 34nm NAND process to manufacture an MLC Enterprise NAND device, which provides enterprise organizations a way to cost-effectively and reliably double their flash-based enterprise storage capacity (since MLC provides twice the capacity in the same die size as SLC). Micron's new MLC Enterprise NAND device achieves 30,000 write cycles - a 6x increase in endurance when compared to standard MLC NAND. And for enterprise applications that are more performance driven, Micron today also introduced a 34nm SLC Enterprise NAND device that achieves 300,000 write cycles - a 3x increase in endurance when compared to standard SLC NAND.

Additionally, leveraging the full performance capability of NAND, Micron's newest Enterprise NAND products also support the ONFI 2.1synchronous interface, delivering a 4- to 5x improvement in data transfer rates when compared to legacy NAND interfaces. Micron's 34nm Enterprise NAND portfolio includes a 32Gb MLC NAND chip and a 16Gb SLC NAND chip that can be configured into multi-die, single packages supporting densities up to 32GB MLC and 16GB SLC, respectively. Micron is now sampling its Enterprise NAND products with customers and controller manufacturers, and is expected to be in volume production in early 2010. Kingston Digital Releases MobileLite Generation Two Media Card Reader

Kingston Digital, Inc., the Flash memory affiliate of Kingston Technology Company, Inc., the independent world leader in memory products, today announced the release of the MobileLiteG2 card reader. The MobileLiteG2 is the second generation of the popular MobileLite Flash card reader, which allows easy data transfer between Flash memory cards and PC or Mac. Supported card formats include SD, SDHC, microSD, microSDHC, Memory Stick PRO Duo, Memory Stick PRO-HG Duo and Memory Stick Micro (M2).

Buffalo Revamps Nail-Sized USB Drive with Card Reader

Remember this thumbnail-sized USB drive by Buffalo? The company developed the idea further with the RMUM-H, which, not only packs up to 16 GB of data in its thumbnail-sized package measuring 11 (W) x 15 (H) x 1 (D) mm, but also holds a Micro-SD/Micro-SDHC card reader that expands its capacity. The card reader can be used to port data between compatible phones and cameras, and the PC. The 16 GB variant (RMUM-16GH/BK) is priced at 10,900 JPY (US $112), the 8 GB one (RMUM-8GH/BK) at 5,200 JPY ($53), 4 GB one (RMUM-4GH/BK) at 2,600 JPY ($26.5), and a 2 GB (RMUM-2GH/BK) variant for 1,700 JPY ($17.5). There is provision for a lanyard or keychain, which is very much welcome.

Toshiba to Launch the World's First SDXC Memory Card

Toshiba Corporation, a leading innovator in NAND flash memory technologies and solutions, today announced the launch of the world's first 64GB SDXC Memory Card with the world's fastest data transfer rate compliant with the new SD Memory Standard Ver. 3.00, UHS 1043. Toshiba also extended its industry-leadership in memory card solutions by unveiling 32GB and 16GB SDHC Memory Cards compliant with the world's fastest data transfer rate. Sample shipments of the new SDXC Memory Cards for OEM manufacturers will start this November, and of the new SDHC Memory Cards in December. Both products will be available at retailers next spring.

Lian-Li Launches EX-P3A/B HDD Bracket Cooling Kit and CR-26A/B Card Reader Kit

Lian-Li Industrial Co. Ltd is launching the EX-P3A (silver) and EX-P3B (Black) HDD bracket cooling kit. The bracket is made of aluminum and sits flush against the bottom plate of the hard drive, protecting the HDD from physical damage, as well as drawing unwanted heat out of the HDD. In addition the connector face protects the HDD SATA connectors from wear and tear while extending the SATA connectors. The HDD Bracket takes up the equivalent of 1x 5.25 bay internally and will be an excellent addition to systems that run hot and need the extra protection that Lian Li provides in this compact unit.

Sharkoon Introduces Flexi-Drive S2S: DIY SSD

Solid State Disks (SSDs) are all the rage these days. The robust flash based hard drives offer many advantages to typical magnetic storage solutions. Silent operation, minimal electricity requirements, almost no heat build-up and fast read/write rates. Because of their high resistance to shock and impact damage, SSDs are especially suited for mobile computers. Disadvantages include their high price and relatively low capacity--at this time capacities greater than 128GB are hard to find.

Sharkoon is now introducing an alternative that allows users to build a Notebook SSD themselves. The Sharkoon Flexi-Drive S2S is an SSD adaptor with the size and connections of a 2.5 inch SATA hard drive. The necessary flash memory is provided by the up to six SDHC cards that can be installed in the enclosure. Users can select the manufacturer, number, chip type (SLC or MLC) and capacity of the memory cards according to their needs.

Toshiba Launches the Largest Density Embedded NAND Flash Memory Devices

Toshiba Corporation today announced the launch of 32GB embedded NAND flash memory modules that offer the largest density yet announced plus full compliance with the e-MMC(1) and eSD(2) standards. The embedded devices are designed for application in mobile digital consumer products, including mobile phones and video cameras. Samples will be available in September 2008, and mass production will start in the fourth quarter.

I spy the Eye-Fi

As it is commonly known SD cards are getting larger and larger in storage capacity and yet smaller in size. The Eye-Fi takes Secure Digital or SD memory a step further by building in Wi-Fi capabilities. The moment you walk in your home this little SD card can automatically transmit your photos from within your camera to your computer(via your wireless network). If you desire it can also simultaneously upload them to your favorite social networks. Now one would suspect that this leaves little room for pictures, but their is also 2GB of on-board memory. For those of you who ever said "Where is my USB cable?" This might just be for you. It has a MSRP of $100 USD, and might make a good holiday for any photo lovers. One can only imagine what other interesting uses this product will have with some modification.
