Kioxia, AIO Core and Kyocera Announce Development of PCIe 5.0-Compatible Broadband Optical SSD for Next-Generation Green Data Centers

Kioxia Corporation, AIO Core Co., Ltd. and Kyocera Corporation today announced the development of a prototype of a PCIe 5.0-compatible broadband SSD with an optical interface (broadband optical SSD). The three companies will develop technologies for broadband optical SSDs to enhance their suitability for advanced applications that require high-speed transfer of large data, such as generative AI, and will also apply them to proof-of-concept (PoC) tests for future social implementation.

The new prototype achieved functional operation with the high-speed PCIe 5.0 interface, which is twice the bandwidth of the previous PCIe 4.0 generation, through the combination of AIO Core's IOCore optical transceiver and Kyocera's OPTINITY optoelectronic integration module technologies. In next-generation green data centers, by replacing the electrical wiring interface with optical and utilizing broadband optical SSD technology significantly increases the physical distance between the compute and storage devices, while maintaining energy efficiency and high signal quality. It also contributes to the flexibility and efficiency of data center system design, where digital diversification and the evolution of generative AI require complex, high-volume, high-speed data processing.

Trump Tariffs to Hike PC Costs at Least 20%, System Integrators Take the Biggest Blow

While semiconductors are exempt (for now at least) from Trump's tariffs, other components going into our PCs are not. According to Tom's Hardware, which spoke to multiple system integrators, tariffs are about to hike PC costs by at least 20%, with system integrators hurt the most. The tariff package imposes a 54% rate on Chinese goods, 34% on top of earlier tariffs, and significant duties on Taiwan, South Korea, and Vietnam products. These countries supply essential PC components such as SSDs, RAM, cases, and graphics cards. Wallace Santos, CEO of Maingear, highlighted the immediate effects on production: "Tariffs have a direct impact on our cost structure… which we have to pass down to our customers." He further explained that some suppliers have halted production in China, leading to scarcity and escalating costs. Santos estimates that prices for his PCs will rise "20 to 25% as a result of the tariffs."

Other company leaders express concern over the limited alternatives available. Kelt Reeves, CEO of Falcon Northwest, stated, "Sadly the overwhelming majority of PC component manufacturing is not done in the US and never has been. There's no US alternative supplier for most PC parts." Reeves added that even US-based system integrators are "facing skyrocketing costs" due to the tariffs, which are set to worsen an already challenging market situation caused by ongoing GPU shortages. Jon Bach, CEO of Puget Systems, shared his perspective in a recent blog post, noting that his company might absorb some costs to minimize consumer price increases. However, even before the latest tariff updates, Bach predicted a price rise of "20 to 45 percent by June." Critics of the tariffs warn of broader economic issues. Gary Shapiro, CEO of the Consumer Technology Association, condemned the policy as "massive tax hikes on Americans that will drive inflation, kill jobs on Main Street, and may cause a recession for the US economy." Chinese Company UNIS Develops M.2 Gen 5 DRAMless SSD with 14.9 GB/s Max Sequential Speeds

Chinese PC hardware company UNIS, a subsidiary of the Tsinghua Unigroup, unveiled a potentially disruptive new consumer M.2 Gen 5 NVMe SSD that could undercut the fastest Gen 5 drives in its form-factor. The new UNIS S5 is built in the M.2-2280 form factor, with a PCI-Express 5.0 x4 host interface. The company claims a maximum sequential read speed of 14.9 GB/s, which is higher than that of the current M.2 Gen 5 NVMe client-segment SSDs. Here's how the drive could undercut its Western contemporaries—it's DRAMless.

The drive features a first-party SSD controller designed by UNIS, which relies on HMB (host memory buffer) technology. Besides its 14.9 GB/s max read speeds, the drive offers a maximum sequential write speed of 12.9 GB/s—also among the highest in the industry—and 4K random access performance of up to 1.8 million IOPS reads, with up to 1.7 million IOPS writes. The performance claims make the UNIS S5 significantly faster than any DRAMless Gen 5 SSD, with the fastest such drives offering around 12 GB/s sequential transfer speeds; and faster than drives based on a DRAM-cached controller platform. Intel to Receive $1.9 Billion as SK Hynix Finalizes NAND Deal

Intel and SK Hynix have finalized an $8.85 billion transaction involving Intel's NAND flash memory operations, marking the conclusion of a two-phase deal initiated in 2020. In the first phase of the transaction, SK Hynix acquired Intel's SSD division along with a NAND production facility in Dalian, China, for $6.61 billion. The Dalian facility was later rebranded as Solidigm. Notably, this phase transferred only the physical assets and operational facilities, leaving behind critical intellectual property, research and development infrastructure, and specialized technical staff. The second phase, finalized with a payment of $1.9 billion this Tuesday, addressed these remaining components. With this payment, SK Hynix secured full rights to Intel's proprietary NAND technology, R&D resources, and the technical workforce dedicated to NAND operations.

During the transition period, Intel maintained control over these elements, which limited integration between Solidigm and Intel's NAND teams. This separation was designed to manage operational risks and gradually transfer capabilities. Completing this deal helps with a strategic restructuring of Intel's portfolio as it shifts focus toward high-growth areas such as AI chip development, foundry services, and next-generation semiconductor manufacturing. A $1.9 billion financial injection is perfect in time for Intel Foundry business, burning billions per year, to offset some of the losses. For SK Hynix, consolidating the complete range of Intel's NAND operations enhances its competitive position in the global NAND market, providing access to established technologies and key industry expertise. This finalization is part of a broader trend where companies divest from commoditized memory products to concentrate on more advanced semiconductor solutions like AI chips and other accelerators, which are enjoying higher margins and a better business outlook.

Solidigm Develops Liquid-Cooled Enterprise SSDs for AI Deployments
