Western Digital is Getting Ready to Launch the SN580 Blue NVMe SSD

It appears that Western Digital is getting ready to expand its budget line of WD Blue SSDs with yet another model, this time a smaller jump from the SN570 to the SN580, compared to the jump in model numbers from the SN550 to the SN570. The drive has passed through the PCI-SIG integrators list and from that information we only know it's a PCIe 4.0 NVMe drive with a four lane interface. However, some retailers have already put up the drive for pre-order and this helps us with a few more details.

For starters, it appears that we're once again looking at drives in the 500 GB to the 2 TB range, although this doesn't mean that WD couldn't launch a 4 TB variant as well, but it seems unlikely. What we also learnt is that these product pages are place holders, as the drives are listed for the same, or higher pricing than the WD Black SN850X, which makes no sense for a budget drive which should be closer to the US$100/€100 mark than the equivalent of twice that. Another European retailer is also listing the current SN570 as being EOL:ed on the 31st of July, suggesting that the SN580 should launch around that date. The same retailer is listing the SN580 as the replacement drive under its part number, which is WDS200T3B0E for the 2 TB SKU.

KIOXIA SSDs Gain Compatibility Approval with Adaptec Host Bus, SmartRAID Adapters from Microchip

Today, Kioxia Corporation, a world leader in memory solutions, announced that its PCIe 4.0 NVMe and SAS SSDs have been successfully tested for compatibility and interoperability with Microchip Technology Inc. ("Microchip's") Adaptec HBA 1200 Series, SmartHBA 2200 Series host bus adapters (HBAs) and SmartRAID 3200 Series RAID adapters.

As one of the broadest portfolios of SSDs in the industry, KIOXIA drives are available for client PCs, as well as data center, hyperscale and enterprise servers and storage systems. KIOXIA CD6, CD8, and CM6 Series PCIe 4.0 NVMe SSDs and KIOXIA PM6 and PM7 Series 24G SAS SSDs all successfully completed compatibility testing performed by Microchip.

Seagate Releases DirectStorage Firmware for the FireCuda 530 SSD

Seagate has released a new firmware update for its FireCuda 530 series of NVMe SSDs that adds DirectStorage support. Seagate is to our knowledge only the second company to release a firmware with DirectStorage support for its SSDs, but we're expecting more to follow. The FireCuda 530 is based on Phison's E18 controller, which is commonly found in a range of NVMe M.2 SSDs from several major and minor SSD brands, with Sabrent being the first company to have announced a DirectStorage firmware update for its drives based on the same controller.

To update to the new firmware, you need the serial number of your FireCuda 530 drive, which you then have to enter on Segate's support site to be able to download the update. The company didn't specify how the firmware update is done, but it seems to be a standalone installer, rather than using some kind of SSD tool, which most SSD makers provide for their drives these days. The new firmware is said to be "reducing CPU overhead and I/O latency, load times and asset streaming are streamlined—allowing for improved multitasking and optimized PC gaming with DirectStorage compatible games." The list of games that support DirectStorage is quite short at the moment, but hopefully we'll see more games implementing support now that there is supported hardware out there.

Sabrent Introduces its Quad NVMe SSD to PCIe 4.0 x16 Card

The Sabrent Quad NVMe SSD to PCIe 4.0 x16 Card (EC-P4BF) is the perfect complement for a desktop that requires additional high-performance storage. Add one, two, three, or four NVMe SSDs with a single, physical x16 PCIe slot adapter. A bifurcation setting in the BIOS is required. Only M.2 M key SSDs are supported, but older and newer generation SSDs in the 2230/2242/2260/2280 form factors will work at up to PCIe 4.0 speeds. The adapter is also backward compatible with PCIe 3.0/2.0 slots. Drives can be accessed individually or placed into a RAID via Intel VROC, AMD Ryzen NVMe RAID, UEFI RAID, or software-based RAID through Windows Storage Spaces when respective criteria are met.

High-performance drives and systems may require high-end cooling, and this adapter has you covered. It's constructed out of aluminium material for physical stability and improved heat dissipation. It also includes thermal padding for all four SSDs to keep things cool and in place. Active cooling for high-performance environments is optional with a switchable fan. The adapter is plug-and-play with driverless operation. Rear-mounted LEDs quickly show the drive status for a quick visual update. The host must support PCIe bifurcation (lane splitting) to access more than one drive, so be sure to check your motherboard's manual ahead of time.

Western Digital Intros WD Black SN850P NVMe Gen 4 SSD for PlayStation 5

Western Digital introduced the WD Black SN850P M.2 NVMe Gen 4 SSD for PlayStation 5 game consoles, which is an officially-licensed PlayStation 5 accessory. The drive can also used with PCs. It comes with a factory-fitted heatsink, and has been extensively tested for compatibility with the game console. The drive comes in three capacity-based variants—1 TB (WDBBYV0010BNC-WRSN), 2 TB (WDBBYV0020BNC-WRSN), and 4 TB (WDBBYV0040BNC-WRSN. All three models offer sequential read speeds of up to 7.3 GB/s, and while the 1 TB variant offers up to 6.3 GB/s sequential writes, the 2 TB and 4 TB ones are rated for up to 6.6 GB/s sequential writes. Their write endurance is rated at 600 TBW, 1,200 TBW, and 2,400 TBW, respectively. Western Digital is backing these drives with 5-year warranties. The company didn't reveal pricing.

SK hynix Begins Mass Production of Industry's Highest 238-Layer 4D NAND

SK hynix Inc. announced today that it has started mass production of its 238-layer 4D NAND Flash memory, following the development in August 2022, and that product compatibility test with a global smartphone manufacturer is underway. "SK hynix has developed solution products for smartphones and client SSDs which are used as PC storage devices, adopting the 238-layer NAND technology, and has moved into mass production in May," the company said. "Given that the company secured world-class competitiveness in price, performance and quality for both 238-layer NAND and the previous generation 176-layer NAND, we expect these products to drive earnings improvement in the second half of the year."

The 238-layer product - the smallest NAND in size - has a 34% higher manufacturing efficiency compared to the previous generation of 176-layer, resulting in a significant improvement in cost competitiveness. Besides, with a data-transfer speed of 2.4 Gb per second, a 50% increase from the previous generation, and approximately 20% increase in read and write speed, the company is confident that it will be able to deliver an improved performance to the smartphone and PC customers using this technology.

Innodisk at Computex 2023: Has the Right Idea About Gen 5 SSDs, to Make them AICs

Innodisk has the right idea about how to do PCIe Gen 5 NVMe SSDs—to ditch the M.2 form-factor, and make them PCIe add-in cards. This would remove the need for cartoonishly disproportionate cooling solutions with high-pitched 20 mm fans; and rather allow SSD designers to use cooling solutions resembling those of graphics cards. Gen 5 NVMe controllers have a TDP of around 15 W, or roughly similar to that of a motherboard chipset. The M.2-2280 form-factor is tiny for the deployment of a sufficiently large heatsink, and so SSD designers are resorting to active cooling, using 20 mm fans that don't sound pleasant. Most single-slot VGA cooling solutions can make short work of 15 W of heat while being much quieter, some even fanless.

The Innodisk 5TG-P AIC SSD uses a PCIe Gen 5 + NVMe 2.0 SSD controller with a large passive heatsink, a PCI-Express 5.0 x4 host interface, and 32 TB of capacity. The drive runs entirely on slot power, and besides the 3D TLC NAND flash, uses a large DDR4 DRAM cache. The company claims sequential transfer speeds of up to 13 GB/s in either direction. Innodisk is targeting the PCIe 5TG-P at workstation and HEDT use-cases. The company is building them in server-relevant form-factors such as U.2 and E.1S. A CDM screenshot shows 13.62 GB/s sequential reads, with 11.55 GB/s sequential writes.

Neo Forza Demonstrates DDR5 Memory Running at 8000 MHz and PCIe Gen 5 SSD at Computex 2023

Neo Forza, a Taiwanese brand entity under Goldkey Technology Corporation, had a booth at Computex 2023, where the company showed its next-generation memory and storage products. Starting off, the company presented its DDR5 memory kits running at 8000 MHz speeds, indicating the maturity of DDR5 and that we are way past the initial 4800 MHz speeds at launch. The demonstrated kit was a part of the company's TRINITY lineup, which was displayed in white. For demo purposes, the kit was configured as two 16 GB DIMMs.

Next up, Neo Forza has showcased its next-generation PCIe Gen 5 NVMe SSD. Running at x4 lanes of the new PCIe 5.0 protocol, the 2 TB SSD was spotted running at 10 GB/s speeds in both read and write tasks set by CrystalDiskMark benchmark. Interestingly, the SSD also boasted a massive heatsink, as shown below.

Kioxia Commences Operation of Two New R&D Facilities

Kioxia Corporation today commenced operation of two new R&D facilities - the Flagship Building at the Yokohama Technology Campus and the Shin-Koyasu Technology Front - strengthening the company's research and development capabilities in flash memory and solid-state drives (SSDs). Going forward, other R&D functions in Kanagawa Prefecture will be relocated to these new R&D hubs to improve research efficiency and promote further advancement in technological innovation.

With the addition of the new Flagship Building, the Yokohama Technology Campus will almost double in size, allowing Kioxia to expand its capabilities in evaluating flash memory and SSD products, thereby enhancing overall product development and product quality. Equipped with environmentally-friendly facilities, the Flagship Building has also acquired ZEB-Ready certification, which is given to buildings that reduce energy consumption by 50% or more through improved energy efficiency.

InnoGrit is Readying Consumer PCIe 5.0 NVMe SSD Controller for Q4

Chinese InnoGrit has proved to be something of a competent contender in the high-end SSD controller market and at Computex 2023 the company was displaying an early sample of its upcoming IG5666 consumer focused PCIe 5.0 NVMe SSD controller. At the moment the company has taped out the controller, but aren't happy with the physical size of the chip and will be doing another tape out for a more optimised chip. Innogrit is using a 16 nm node for the controller, which might be part of the reason why they're having a hard time to get it the right size, but there's also cost reasons that have to be taken into consideration.

Based on the early samples, InnoGrit is expecting it to reach sequential speeds of up to 14 GB/s read and 11 GB/s write. Random performance is said to reach 3 million read and 2.5 million write IOPs. The controller should support up to 16 TB of NAND flash and it supports all common types of NAND up to a speed of 2400 MT/s. The IG5666 is based on the same Tacoma architecture as InnoGrit's IG5669, which is targeting enterprise use, yet delivers similar performance.

Kingston Brings XS1000 External SSD and Non-Binary DDR5 to Computex 2023

Kingston was thrilled to be back at Computex to showcase some of its new and upcoming products, including the new XS1000 External SSD and some of its new and current Fury DDR5 memory modules and kits. In addition to these new products, Kingston also showcased its dedication to enterprise and server market with DC600M enterprise SSD, industrial SD cards, and Server Premier DDR5 memory, as well as its focus on both creators, gamers, and those on the move, with the Fury DDR5 memory, Fury Renegade SSDs, the new DT microDuo and DTMax flash drives, SD and microSD cards, and more.

To be available in Q3 2023, the Kingston XS1000 External SSD aims to bring pocket-sized portability without compromising the performance. It will be available in 1 TB and 2 TB capacities, have USB 3.2 Gen 2 interface, and peak at 1000 MB/s read and write sequential performance. Kingston is also announcing an updated Fury Renegade DDR5 RGB memory lineup, which will be available in 16 GB to 48 GB capacities, bringing non-binary kits, and ranging from 6000 to 7200 MT/s. In addition, there is also the FURY Renegade PCIe 4.0 M.2 SSD, coming in capacities of up to 4 TB and reaching sequential read and write performance of up to 7,300 and 7,000 MB/s, respectively.

MSI Shows Off Spatium M570 PRO Flagship SSD with FROZR and FROZR+ Cooling Solutions

A recurring trend at Computex has been to market flagship Gen 5 NVMe SSDs and the cooling solutions required for them to reach their potential, as separate products. MSI showed off its flagship Spatium M570 PRO Gen 5 NVMe SSD that's capable of sequential transfer speeds as high as 14 GB/s. The company demoed a single drive posting 14520 MB/s reads and 12409 MB/s writes on CDM, when paired with its FROZR+ active fan-heatsink. An add-on card with two M.2 Gen 5 slots, and two of these M570 PRO drives in RAID with FROZR passive heatsinks, posts 22024 MB/s reads with 23130 MB/s writes as measured by CDM.

The Spatium FROZR+ cooling solution uses an extruded aluminium monoblock heatsink to which a C-shaped heatpipe spreads heat drawn from the drive. This heatsink is ventilated by what looks like a 40 mm version of MSI's TorX 5.0 fan with a webbed impeller that's designed to guide all of its airflow axially. MSI claims that the FROZR+ cooler reduces controller temperatures by up to 30°C. The Spatium FROZR is a passive cooling solution that uses an aluminium fin-stack heatsink to which heat drawn from the SSD is fed by two 6 mm heatpipes. MSI claims this thing can lower controller temperatures by up to 20°C. Look at the sizes of cooling solutions for Gen 5 NVMe SSDs in general (across brands), we wonder why AIC SSDs with VGA-grade cooling solutions aren't making a comeback.

Crucial Launches T700 Gen5 SSD and Crucial Pro Series DRAM

Micron Technology, Inc. (Nasdaq: MU), today announced the Crucial Pro Series which features memory and storage products designed for gamers, content creators, workstation professionals or anyone needing the benefits of a robust, high-performance computing experience with plug-and-play functionality. The Crucial T700 PCIe Gen 5 SSD, the marquee product in the new Pro Series category, offers industry-leading sequential read/write speeds up to 12,400 MB/s and 11,800 MB/s respectively. Random read/write speeds of up to 1,500K IOPS enable faster gaming, video editing, 3D rendering or heavy workload applications. Another addition to the Crucial Pro Series is the Crucial DDR5 Pro and DDR4 Pro DRAM offerings with heat spreaders, providing out-of-the-box performance to improve system speed, bandwidth and responsiveness without the hassle of LEDs and the risks associated with overclocking and latency tuning.

Team Group Unveils Several T-Create Series Memory Products for Creators at Computex

Team Group's T-Create line of memory products is targeted squarely at content creators, and characterized by their slender, sober product design. The company unveiled several new products in this brand, spanning from DDR5 PC memory to portable SSDs, docking stations, USB flash drives, and even memory cards. On the memory front, Team Group showed us both standard-size DDR5 DIMMs for desktops, and SO-DIMMs meant for laptops. A simple matte-black heat spreader dons the desktop variant. The desktop DDR5 module comes in speed-based variants spanning between DDR5-6000 and DDR5-6800, while the SO-DIMMs come in DDR5-5200 to DDR5-5600. What's interesting is that both come in high-capacity variants, with the desktop T-Create DDR5 coming in 64 GB (2x 32 GB) to 128 GB (2x 64 GB), while the SO-DIMMs come in 16 GB thru 64 GB kit sizes.

The company also showed off a plethora of new storage products, beginning with the T-Create Classic TC-200 NFC, and the larger T-Create Expert USB4. The TC-200 has a USB 3.2x2 type-C interface that's capable of 20 Gbps interface speed, which it uses to offer sequential transfer rates of up to 2 GB/s reads/writes. It also integrates an NFC reader, so it can be locked and unlocked using smartcards or mobile applications running on NFC-capable smartphones. This drive comes in capacities of 500 GB, 1 TB, and 2 TB. The larger T-Create Expert USB4, as its name suggests, features a 40 Gbps USB 4.0 type-C interface, and an impressive 4 GB/s maximum sequential transfer speed. Rounding things off in the PC storage space is the T-Create Classic M.2 docking station. This looks a lot like a cylindrical water cooling reservoir, except you pop in an M.2 NVMe SSD. Don't add water.

Team Group Shows Off Gen 5 NVMe SSD with AIO Cooling, and T-Force Z5 Gen 5 SSDs

A trend we've seen in the 2023 Computex is that SSD manufacturers aren't advertising their feisty Gen 5 NVMe SSDs with the elaborate cooling solutions that they sorely need, but rather as bare drives, with the cooling options marketed separately. In practice, manufacturers could get retailers to bundle Gen 5 SSDs with a selection of their coolers. This lets them trim some of the criticism of just how hot SSDs have gotten over just one generation. Team Group showed off its T-Force Cardea Z5 lines of M.2 Gen 5 NVMe SSDs. There are two distinct lines with the same names. One of these comes with a maximum sequential read speed of 12 GB/s, while the other comes with 14 GB/s. Both have their respective 1 TB, 2 TB, and 4 TB capacity variants. Both use 3D TLC NAND flash. The under-the-hood difference between the 12 GB/s and 14 GB/s versions of the Cardea Z5 is that while the 12 GB/s variant uses a Phison E26-series controller, the 14 GB/s one uses an InnoGrit IG5666 controller. Team Group intends to eventually re-brand the 14 GB/s variant as the Cardea Z54A series.

Team Group also announced a handful cooling solutions to pair with these Gen 5 SSDs. The most striking of these is the T-Force Siren, an all-in-one (AIO) closed loop liquid M.2 NVMe SSD cooler, with as 120 mm radiator. The name is a bit of a misnomer, as SSD coolers with 20 mm fans is what a siren might sound like. Obviously, this cooler is overkill, and helps the SSD deliver its best performance, but there are other options from the company. The T-Force AirFlow I uses two copper heatpipes that run through the base-plate, pulling heat from the controller, NAND flash, and DRAM, and pushing it through an aluminium fin-stack arranged vertically. This is then ventilated by a 30 mm fan. The T-Force Airflow II uses a slightly different approach, with a single thicker heat pipe arranged in a C-shape, with radially-projecting finnage that have the appearance of a cylinder. At the other end of this is a 30 mm fan.

Akasa's Gecko Turbo Cooler for SSDs Features a Blower Fan

There has been no shortage of various SSD coolers to date, but none seems to have implemented a blower fan as yet. Well, Akasa decided that it was a product that was needed in the market and was showing off its Gecko Turbo Cooler at Computex. The heatsink part of the cooler is dwarfed by the blower fan that sits on top of it, making for a rather amusing looking device. As to the noise level, we can only guess, as it wasn't plugged in, but blower fans don't tend to be the quietest fans around. That said, it's likely to bring the best airflow of any M.2 SSD cooler to date, even though it might be a tad excessive, even for PCIe 5.0 SSDs.

PNY Shows Off M.2 SSD Heatsink with Two Fans and RGB Bling

PNY at the 2023 Computex, showed off an M.2-2280 SSD cooling solution with nor one, but two fans, in what is a sign of things to come with upcoming PCIe Gen 5 NVMe SSDs. The cooler features an extruded aluminium monoblock heatsink with a pair of 20 mm fans at its two ends. The central portion of the cooler has the bulk of its aluminium fins. A top-plate has an RGB illuminated, stylized PNY logo, which can be synchronized with the lighting of your PNY XLR8 Verto EPIC-X graphics cards. It's smarter on PNY's part to market the cooler as a separate product, than part of any upcoming PCIe Gen 5 SSD.
