StarTech Intros SATSAS425BK 4-Bay Hot Swap SATA/SAS Backplane

StarTech.com, a leading manufacturer of hard-to-find connectivity parts has announced the release of the Mini-SAS to 4x SATA/SAS Backplane (part # SATSAS425BK), which enables users to add four 2.5" SATA or SAS hard drives to a desktop computer, using a single Mini-SAS (SFF-8087) host connection, while requiring only a single 5.25" bay for installation. MOSAID First to Achieve Single Channel, Full Performance 16-Die NAND Flash Stack

MOSAID Technologies Inc. today announced that it is sampling the industry's first NAND Flash MCP (multi-chip package) with a 16-die NAND stack operating on a single high-performance channel.

MOSAID's 512Gb HLNAND (HyperLink NAND) MCP combines a stack of 16 industry standard 32Gb NAND Flash die with two HLNAND interface devices to achieve 333MB/s output over a single byte-wide HLNAND interface channel. Conventional NAND Flash MCP designs cannot stack more than four NAND dies without suffering from performance degradation, and would require two or more channels to deliver similar throughput.

ORICO Officially Intros HS-01 Series Solid State Drives

ORICO officially introduced the HS-01 series 2.5" SATA solid-state drives (SSDs). The drives come in four variants, based solely on the design of the drives' shells, while internally, the four are identical. Internally, the HS-01 is driven by LSI-SandForce SF-2281 controller, with 25 nm MLC NAND flash memory, offering 256 GB of storage. Apparently, these drives incorporate the latest firmware microcode released by LSI that helps the drive make better use of its available NAND flash capacity.

The drives take advantage of the SATA 6 Gb/s interface, offering sustained sequential speeds of 500 MB/s (read) and 350 MB/s (write). The four previously mentioned variants are HS-01A-256S3, HS-01C-256S3, HS-01D-256S3 and HS-01E-256S3 (first picture, CW). The bodies are made of CNC-milled aluminum, which are ridged to assist in heat dissipation. Backed by 5-year warranty, the HS-01 series 256 GB drives are priced at 2,898 RMB (US $458.3).

OCZ Vertex 4 Solid State Drive Seen at CeBIT

As promised, OCZ Technology is showing off at CeBIT 2012 its newest Vertex Series solid state drive, the Vertex 4. Pictured below, the upcoming SSD is based around the Indilinx Everest 2 platform, it features synchronous MLC NAND Flash memory (SLC can be used for enterprise-oriented models), and is capable of transfer speeds of up to 550 MB/s and up to 90,000 IOPS.

The Vertex 4 drive on display at CeBIT has a 2.5-inch form factor, a SATA 6.0 Gbps interface, and, according to the live demos, it delivers sequential read/write speeds of 367/305 MB/s and up to 80,000 IOPS for 4k random reads.

EMC Selects Hitachi GST Enterprise-Class Solid State Drives

takeMS Unveils the UTX-2200 Series Solid State Drives

German memory and storage supplier takeMS has this week revealed its own line of solid state drives based on SandForce's SF-2281 controller. Dubbed UTX-2200, takeMS' SSDs feature a 2.5-inch form factor, a SATA 6.0 Gbps interface, MLC (multi-level cell) NAND flash memory, TRIM and NCQ support, and a MTBF of 2 million hours.

The UTX-2200 drives are capable of read/write speeds of up to 550/500 MB/s (up to 70,000 IOPS) and will ship (soon) in 60 GB, 120 GB, 240 GB and 480 GB capacities. Each model will be backed by a two-year warranty and will be bundled with a 2.5-inch to 3.5-inch adapter.

GeIL Readies the Zenith Series Solid State Drives

Following many of its rivals, Taiwanese memory module maker Golden Emperor International Ltd. (aka GeIL) has decided to expand into the solid state drive market. The company is currently finishing up its very first (2.5-inch) SSDs which are known as Zenith S2 (SATA 3.0 Gbps) and Zenith S3 (SATA 6.0 Gbps) and are set to become available as soon as next month.

The Zenith S2 will deliver read/write speeds of up to 280/270 MB/s while the S3 models, which are powered by SandForce SF-2000 Series controllers, will be capable of 500+ MB/s transfer speeds.

The Zenith S2 family will include 60 GB and 120 GB models whereas the Zenith S3 line will feature 60 GB, 120 GB, 240 GB and 480 GB drives. More details about GeIL's SSDs are expected in the coming weeks.

Fresh news from the IT Partners event in France, PNY is preparing the release of a couple of new, speedy solid state drives, the enterprise-grade Optima Pro models which make use of SandForce's SF-2582 controller. These 2.5-inch drives also have a metal casing, MLC (multi-level cell) NAND Flash memory chips, and a SATA 6.0 Gbps interface.

The Optima Pro SSDs come in 120 GB and 240 GB capacities and should deliver sequential read/write speeds of over 500 MB/s. Unfortunately their prices are not yet known.
