US Authorities Investigating TP-Link Over Connection to China-backed Cyberattacks

Popular router manufacturer TP-Link is being investigated by US authorities over an alleged connection to cyberattacks emanating from the PRC. According to the Wall Street Journal, the Commerce, Justice and Defense departments are all investigating the company and the Commerce Department has gone as far as issuing a subpoena to TP-Link. The WSJ states that TP-Link holds close to a 65 percent market share in the US consumer router market, which puts the company in a unique market position.

The end results of the investigations, assuming either US authority finds any wrongdoings, could lead to TP-Link being banned from selling its routers in the US. A spokeswoman for TP-Link in the US issued the following statement to the WSJ "We welcome any opportunities to engage with the U.S. government to demonstrate that our security practices are fully in line with industry security standards, and to demonstrate our ongoing commitment to the U.S. market, U.S. consumers, and addressing U.S. national security risks".

TP-Link Unveils Market-Disrupting Wi-Fi 7 Mesh Systems and Routers

TP-Link Systems Inc., a global leader in networking and smart home solutions, today introduced its new lineup of Wi-Fi 7 networking solutions: the Deco BE5000 and Deco BE3600 Mesh Systems, alongside the Archer BE3600 Router. As the first-to-market Wi-Fi 7 brand, TP-Link continues to lead the industry into a new generation, offering the latest Wi-Fi technology to consumers across a range of accessible price points.

"Consumers are often resigned to seeing new generations of technology siloed off behind high costs, relegated to businesses, technology enthusiasts and dedicated hobbyists," said Jeff Barney, President at TP-Link Systems Inc. "As leaders in Wi-Fi 7, we believe everyone should have access to the latest technologies. This is why we're offering these new products at accessible price points today."

TP-Link Launches the $99 Archer BE3600 WiFi 7 Router

To date, WiFi 7 routers have been costing hundreds of dollars, with high-end models going for as much as US$800 for standard routers, with mesh systems easily breaking the US$1000 barrier. TP-Link's new Archer BE3600—also known as the Archer BE230 in some markets—is the polar opposite to those expensive routers, as it's being sold for a mere US$99. We've even found it for less than that in some countries, although we've also seen the BE230 model for twice as much, so the pricing varies quite a lot depending on where you live. You might be wondering how much router you get for your money, since there has to be some trade-offs, right?

Well, you wouldn't be wrong, but there are fewer trade-offs than we expected. As the model name implies, the combined WiFi speed is 3600 Mbps in theory, with the 5 GHz radio delivering up to 2882 Mbps and the 2.4 GHz radio delivering up to 688 Mbps. Both the 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz radios are 2x2, but at least the 5 GHz radio supports up to 240 MHz channel width, although 160 MHz is far more common on the device side. However, there's no 6 GHz radio to be found at this price, which isn't entirely unexpected at this price point. However, new features like Multi-Link Operation (MLO) are supported. You also get a pair of 2.5 Gbps Ethernet ports, something only routers at around twice the price of the Archer BE3600 has featured so far. There's even a USB 3.0 for those that want to connect up a storage device to their router as a makeshift network drive. According to a teardown done by the FCC, the Archer BE3600 is based on a Broadcom SoC with integrated WiFi and a Realtek switch for the Gigabit ports.

CISA Warns About Mirai Botnet Exploit on Some TP-Link Routers

Owners of TP-Link routers ought to heed a warning from the US government's Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA), as at least one router model from the company is vulnerable to known exploits. The exploit is actively targeted by Mirai botnet operators and it allows for injection of commands that could allow them to take over the routers via remote code execution (RCE) software. The router from TP-Link that is known to be vulnerable to the exploits is the Archer AX-21, a fairly recent entry level AX1800 Wi-Fi 6 model that is sold globally by the company.

The specific exploit for the Archer AX-21 is tracked as CVE-2023-1389 and is affecting all Archer AX-21 routers with a firmware version older than 1.1.4 2023019, as it's said to address the vulnerabilities. Users who have linked their router to a TP-Link cloud account and allow for automatic updates should already have had their router firmware automatically updated, but everyone else should update their router firmware as soon as possible. There have already been reports of the exploit being actively used by the Mirai botnet to take over routers in Eastern Europe as of the middle of last month, but further parts of the world aren't spared from attacks either by now. Routers might often be devices that are forgotten in a corner somewhere, but it's important to keep the firmware up to date, especially as they are increasingly becoming the target of hackers.

Wi-Fi 7 Cryptomining Router - A Fresh Scam (Ab)using a Friendly Name

An entity calling themselves "TP-Link ASIC" recently announced a Wi-Fi 7 capable ASIC cryptocurrency miner with claims of hashing rates above even the mighty RTX 4090... In one specific ASIC friendly algorithm. If the concept of a router that mines crypto sounds strange, deranged, or downright questionable to you, you're not alone. The consumer market for crypto mining has waned heavily in the last handful of months due in no small part to Ethereum switching to Proof of Stake last September, which led to GPUs being ineffectual for mining the previously profitable coin. However, ASIC mining does remain prevalent across the sea of various algorithms and alt-coins that exist. One such alt-coin is Kadena, a smaller Proof of Work cryptocurrency that appears to flutter around the $1USD range. This is where "TP-Link ASIC" has placed their engineering efforts with the, "TP-Link NX31 31.2 THS Router Miner," which, as the name implies, offers 31.2 TH/s of Kadena hashing power at a cool $1,990 USD (previously $1,440).

If you've been around long enough to remember the Butterfly Labs fiasco and fallout, you're probably already groaning and holding your head in your hands. Buying ASICs from new and unproven vendors promising the moon is never a good idea. But TP-Link isn't an unproven company, they have a successful business and sell legitimate products. Surely this would be handled properly since this is a well established brand, right? Well, here's the twist; "TP-Link ASIC" is NOT TP-Link. When questioned about this new launch by Tom's Hardware a TP-Link representative responded that "TP-Link ASIC" has no affiliation with TP-Link, nor does their NX31 mining router.

TP-Link Said to be Sharing all Router Traffic with Third Party

These days, routers are quite complex devices that are doing much more than just routing data and are often the main security device on a home network. As such, we've seen a surge in third party services such as Asus' AIProtection that runs software from Trend Micro and Netgear Armor in cooperation with Bitdefender. Chinese TP-Link is likewise offering similar services, some in partnership with Trend Micro and some with Avira. It now appears that TP-Link's HomeCare service—that the company is offering in partnership with Avira—is sending data to Avira even when disabled in the UI, based on a thread over at Reddit.

The standard Avira features are meant to offer protection against malicious content, network intrusions and even against infected devices on the network that are said to be quarantined from other devices on the network. It also incorporates some basic parental control features, such as automatic content filtering and time controls. However, in this case, the issue isn't the functionality itself, but the fact that there apparently is no way to turn off the HomeCare feature, since even when seemingly disabled in the UI of the affected routers, it sends data to Avira. It seems to be a fairly large amount of data being sent as well, with the initial poster claiming over 80,000 requests in a 24 hour period. According to a review of a TP-Link product over on XDA-Developers from May last year, TP-Link said that they were working on a firmware update that would allow the Avira service to be turned off permanently.

TP-Link Launches Archer GX90 With Dedicated Wi-Fi Band for Gaming

If you're a fan of the spider/octopus router design that we've seen from several companies since 802.11ax/Wi-Fi 6 was introduced, then the new TP-Link Archer GX90 might be for you. Jokes aside, this router takes a different approach to the usual tri-band routers, by dedicating the 4x4 5 GHz radio for gaming, while leaving the other 5 GHz radio for your family to share.

The Archer GX90 is sold as an AX6600 router and it appears to be based on the same hardware as TP-Link's Archer AX90, just in a more gamer focused package. TP-Link has incorporated what they call a Game Accelerator, Game Statistics and Game Protector, with the Game Accelerator being limited to less than 50 games at the moment, of which some appear to be specific to the Chinese market. The Game Statistics feature is actually a real time latency monitor, that also shows how long you've been playing a specific game for and the router load, whereas Game Protector appears to simply be some router based antivirus and parental control software.

TP-Link Intros Archer TX3000E 802.11ax PCIe WLAN Card

For those of us on older desktops with plenty of PCIe slots to go around, and a brand new 802.11ax router in the house to drive a swanky new gigabit fiber Internet connection, TP-Link released the Archer TX3000E, a PCI-Express add-on card that gives your desktop 802.11ax Wi-Fi 6 and Bluetooth 5.0 connectivity. The product consists of three components, the add-on card, an antenna assembly, and cabling. The add-on card features PCI-Express 2.0 x1 (5 Gbps per direction) host interface, and uses an Intel AX200 WLAN controller that's passively cooled by a heatsink.

The Archer TX3000E supports dual-band 802.11ax, with up to 2402 Mbps on the 5 GHz band, and up to 574 Mbps in the 2.4 GHz band, along with support for WPA3. Besides PCIe, a 4-pin USB 2.0 cable connects to one of your motherboard's vacant USB 2.0 headers, for the Bluetooth 5.0 component to work. The desktop antenna assembly features two multi-directional antennae, and a magnetized base. Available now, the Archer TX3000E is priced at 79.90€.

TP-LINK Launches the Archer AX10 Wi-Fi 6 Router for Under €100

TP-LINK has made available through retailers a budget Wi-Fi router that promises to slightly democratize the ax protocol for the masses. The new Archer AX10 seems to be no slouch in terms of bang for the buck: it's a Wi-Fi 6-enabled router that packs most technologies you'd be looking for from a standard user point of view. There's support for beamforming technology so that the signal is focused towards the devices that are actually connected to the router (which are balanced via OFDMA tech, meaning the router can better handle simultaneous connections), improving signal strength and reducing interference. Thanks to that and the pure speeds of the ax protocol, the AX10 can provide signal speeds of up to 1201 Mb/s on the 5 GHz band. A quad antenna design serves to ensure ample coverage and signal integrity.

The AX10 has a triple core ARM processor operating at 1.5 GHz, aided by 256 MB of RAM and 16 MB of flash memory for the firmware. 4x Gigabit Ethernet ports and 1x WAN connection that also delivers a maximum speed of 1 Gigabit should enable most of the wired connections you need. And best of all: the router will be available for less than €100.
