AMD Announces Expanded Ryzen Threadripper 5000 WX-Series Availability

In March of 2022, AMD released the latest AMD Ryzen Threadripper PRO 5000 WX-Series processors with our OEM partner Lenovo and the ThinkStation P620. This legendary capability is now expanding into the Dell Precision 7865 workstation. As AMD continues to expand its workstation business, we're happy to share that Ryzen Threadripper PRO 5000 WX-Series processors will be available at leading system integrators worldwide beginning in July, 2022. We also expect to make these processors available to our DIY community later this year.

Threadripper processors have always been a platform that is defined by leadership performance and capability which enables unlimited creative potential. Examining what our most demanding enthusiasts and content creators value most in the platform has led us to unify the Threadripper and Threadripper PRO product lines. Going forward, the Threadripper platform will now use a single "common infrastructure." This means there will be one set of Threadripper PRO processors to choose from, with one CPU socket and chipset, and every processor will be based on AMD Ryzen Threadripper PRO silicon.

Apple's Brand New Mac Studio With the M1 Ultra CPU Gets First Benchmark Figures

Less than 24 hours after Apple's launch event, the first Geekbench numbers for the new Apple M1 Ultra CPU are out and the numbers are interesting to say the least. For starters, the system the Geekbench numbers are from, is the top of the range 20 Core SKU with 128 GB of RAM. This helps us get some additional insight into Apple's new CPUs. As Apple didn't provide much in technical terms yesterday, nor on its website, we now know that the clock speed of the M1 Ultra is the same 3.2 GHz as the regular M1. It also appears that the CPU cache remains the same, even though Geekbench is only listing the cache of the efficiency cores for some reason.

Although Geekbench isn't a reliable cross-platform benchmark, we do at least get an idea of how the new SoC from Apple performs. The single core performance is more or less on par with the Apple M1 Max, but loses out quite easily to Intel's Alder Lake processors. However, once we move to the multi-threaded test, the M1 Ultra really shows what it's capable of. Surprisingly the performance scaling is almost linear with the double of performance CPU cores compared to the M1 Max, which suggests that Apple's multi-chip module design is extremely capable. The interesting thing will be to see how well this design scales for GPU intensive applications. Stepping outside of the Apple ecosystem, the M1 Ultra ends up somewhere around an AMD Ryzen Threadripper 3970X in terms of multi-core performance. Scaling over some of the detailed tests aren't somewhere between 80-90 percent depending on the particular test compared to the M1 Max, if we compare to the faster results on Geekbench, which is still quite impressive considering we're looking at two M1 Max CPUs that are technically glued together.

AMD Announces Zen 3 Threadripper 5000, but only for Professionals

AMD today launched its first Ryzen Threadripper processors based on the "Zen 3" microarchitecture, with the Ryzen Threadripper PRO 5000WX series. Designed to be drop-in compatible with workstations and motherboards based on the AMD WRX80 chipset, these processors come in core-counts of up to 64-core/128-thread, with an enormous I/O offering that includes 8-channel DDR4 memory with ECC support, and a 128-lane PCI-Express 4.0 root complex. The biggest change over the previous generation Threadripper PRO 3000WX series has to be the use of "Zen 3" CCDs, each with 8 CPU cores, sharing a common 32 MB of L3 cache. AMD isn't using the "Zen 3" chiplets with 3DV Cache.

The full AMD PRO management feature-set from Ryzen PRO is available on these processors, including PRO Security, PRO Management, and a special support channel that includes planned parts and software availability. What's more, AMD has been working with ISVs of most professional content-creation software since the past generation of Ryzen Threadripper PRO, to optimize their software for the processors (high core-counts, NUMA topology, etc.). The benefits of these are shared with all generations of Threadrippers. Although all parts in the Threadripper PRO 5000WX series are rated for a TDP of 280 W, AMD claims to have worked on power-management, offering up to 67 percent lower power per core, compared to the competition (2P Xeon Scalable Platinum 8280).

AMD Ryzen Threadripper Pro 5000WX-Series Spec Leak

AMD's Threadripper Pro WX or workstation processors are set to finally join the 5000-series of AMD CPU's if the latest leaks are to be believed. It would seem that AMD is planning no less than five new SKUs, or one more than the current 3000-series of workstation chips. The new entry is a 24 core, 48 thread chip, which was lacking from the current range. As such, the entire series will consist of 12, 16, 24, 32 and 64 core options, all with twice as many threads. All chips have a common 4.5 GHz peak turbo clock, but the base clocks vary by quite a bit, depending on the core count.

The 12 core 5945WX has a base clock of 4.1 GHz, with the 16 core 5955WX coming in at 4 GHz, the 24 core 5965WX then drops to 3.8 GHz, followed by the 32 core 5975WX at 3.6 GHz. Finally the 64 core 5995WX is said to only muster a base clock of 2.7 GHz. All five CPUs have a TDP rating of 280 Watts. The new Threadripper chips are expected to work in current boards that sport a WRX80 socket. As such, PCIe lanes and memory support is expected to remain the same as for the 3000-series.

AMD Threadripper Pro 5000 Series Spec Leaks

There has been some discussion as to whether or not AMD would launch any Zen 3 based Threadripper processors or not, considering that the desktop processors have been out for well over a year by now. According to igor's Lab, we now know that AMD is very close to launching some new 5000-series Threadripper Pro CPU's—codename Chagall—that fits into AMD's sWRX8 socket, which is intended for high-end workstations and servers.

It appears AMD is planning to launch five new CPUs, namely the 5995WX, 5975WX, 5965WX, 5955WX and 5945WX. All of the CPUs appear to have a maximum, single core boost clock of 4550 MHz and range from 12 to 64 cores, with a TDP of 280 W and a power range of 170 to 260 Watts. Up to eight channels of DDR4 3200 MHz is supported and up to 128 PCIe 4.0 are expected to be featured as well. For those hoping there would be an HEDT version, we have bad news, as based on what we've found out independently and the information provided by igor's Lab, there won't be any HEDT Chagall CPUs, at least not at this point in time. This means that the upgrade path for sTRX4 motherboards ended up being as bad as for the older TR4 motherboards, as AMD has now abandoned two HEDT platforms in a row.

AMD Ryzen Threadripper PRO 5000 Series Bound for March 2022

AMD is preparing to update its Ryzen Threadripper PRO line of workstation processors, with product announcements slated for January 2022, along the sidelines of CES, with availability slated for March 8, 2022, according to a VideoCardz report. The new Ryzen Threadripper PRO 5000 series processors are likely to combine "Zen 3+" CCDs (6 nm, featuring 3D Vertical Cache memory), with full sWRX8 I/O that includes 128 PCI-Express Gen 4 lanes, and 8-channel DDR4 memory. There are no sTRX4 options on the horizon.

What's interesting with the lineup is that CPU core-counts range all the way from 12-core/24-thread to 64-core/128-thread. Past generations of Threadripper WX stuck with higher core-counts (32 and up). The series begins with the Threadripper PRO 5945WX (12-core/24-thread), followed by the PRO 5955WX (16-core/32-thread), the PRO 5965WX (24-core/48-thread), PRO 5975WX (32-core/64-thread), and the 64-core/128-thread PRO 5995WX. There's no 48-core part in the stack. The TDP of all these chips is rated at 280 W.

AMD Ryzen Threadripper PRO 5995WX CPU Appears In Benchmark

AMD's 64-core Ryzen Threadripper PRO 5995WX will be the flagship processor for the upcoming Ryzen Threadripper 5000 Series that will be launched later this year. This particular processor has already surfaced on the Milky Way@Home distributed computing database along with the Threadripper PRO 5945WX. This latest benchmark comes from PugetBench (now removed) where the processor was tested in the photogrammetry software Agisoft Metashape 10. The 5995WX was paired with an AMD reference platform Sharkstooth-CGL WRX80 motherboard and 64 GB of 3200 MHz memory.

The benchmark includes rendering times for various tests including Park Map, Rock Model, School Model, and School Map where the processor generates a 3D object from a set of photos. There are only extremely limited results with other processors to compare to so this benchmark cannot be used as an indication of performance. The Ryzen Threadripper 5000 Series should be fully compatible with existing TRX80 and WRX80 motherboards and is currently expected to launch in Q4 2021.

AMD Ryzen Threadripper 5000 Lineup Revealed

The upcoming Ryzen Threadripper 5000 lineup of processors has been leaked in documents received by Wccftech from the recent Gigabyte data breach. The next generation of Zen 3 based Threadripper processors will include at least 8 SKUs with varying core counts up to 64 cores. The documents also confirm that AMD will launch both Workstation and High-End Desktop models for the WRX80 and TRX40 sockets respectively with the same TDP and core counts as their Zen 2 predecessors. The five PRO (Workstation) chips will be offered in 64, 32, 24, 16, and 12 core models while the three HEDT versions will be offered with 64, 32, and 24 cores. The Workstation processors will offer an 8-channel IMC and 128 PCIe 4.0 lanes compared to 64 on the HEDT chips. AMD is expected to launch these Ryzen Threadripper 5000 processors in November 2021.

Alphacool Announces Eisbaer Pro Aurora 240 and 360 AIO Liquid CPU Coolers

The Alphacool Eisbaer Pro represents a special variant in the Alphacool AIO range. The standard features of all Alphacool Eisbaer AIOs remain the same. These include the pure copper radiators, the ability to be able to expand the loop with the quick-release fastener and of course the nickel-plated copper cold plate. The new DC-LT 2 pump is used as the pump. This pump is already in use with the GPU AIO Eiswolf 2. A new pump shaft and improved electronics have made the pump even smoother.

The special feature of the Eisbaer Pro is the significantly larger cooler base which was specially developed for AMD Threadripper processors and Intel LGA 3647. However, the Eisbaer Pro also fits the current Ryzen socket AMD AM4. Due to the significantly larger cold plate, AMD Ryzen AM4 CPUs are cooled particularly well as all cores are definitely completely covered by cooling fins.

EKWB: Cooling Of the Highest Magnitude Comes to Threadripper CPUs

EK, the leading computer liquid cooling gear manufacturer, is launching a new water block, tailor-made for AMD Ryzen Threadripper processors. The Magnitude sTRX4 is the most complex Threadripper CPU water block on the market to date. Our latest addition to the EK Quantum product line has no intention of succeeding or replacing its Velocity sTR4 counterparts, as the Magnitude water block is a rather sophisticated alternative optimized specifically for Zen 2 based AMD Threadripper CPUs.

EK-Quantum Magnitude sTRX4
The block will be available in the same four finishes as regular Magnitude blocks: Copper + Acetal, Nickel + Acetal (D-RGB), Nickel + Plexi (D-RGB), and Full Nickel. However, to distinguish the two acetal models, Copper + Acetal versions will feature an exclusive red frame by default. The award-winning, signature design truly sets the Magnitude apart, with every piece being CNC-milled from a solid piece of material. The three-dimensional aluminum mounting frame perfectly blends in with the asymmetrical shape of the Threadripper CPU socket while making the screws a seamless part of the water block. Strong edges and chamfers root this futuristic design firmly into the EK Quantum line. Magnitude proudly bears its prestigious iF Design Award.

Alphacool Introduces Four New Extremely Large Radiators

Alphacool introduces four new extremely large radiators. The first two radiators are for 180 or 200 mm fans and are a thickness of 86 mm. The 200 and 400 mm NexXxoS Monsta radiators offer a huge cooling surface. Both radiators have 7x standard G1/4" ports. 6 of the ports are for inlet/outlet and the 7th port is located at the end chamber and can only be used for filling, draining, or bleeding the radiator. The fin density has been reduced from 16 to 12 FPI to allow the use of lower static pressure fans and lower RPMs.

The new Nova 1080 UT60 radiator is a thicker version of the Nova 1080 XT45 radiator. The enormous cooling surface is comparable to three 360 mm UT60 radiators. This makes it easy to cool more than 1000 W of excess heat with extremely quiet to silent spinning fans. This is equivalent to a 64 core AMD Threadripper of the latest generation and at least two GeForce RTX 3090 graphics cards.

AMD Reportedly Preparing To Launch Zen 3 Ryzen Threadripper 5000 in August

The AMD Zen 3 architecture provided significant performance improvements with the company releasing server, desktop, and mobile processors featuring the architecture. AMD is yet to update their Threadripper lineup with the new architecture however that looks set to change with the company reportedly preparing to announce the next generation "Chagall" Threadripper 5000 processors in August. The Threadripper family is in dire need of a refresh with the latest 3000 series processors being launched back in November 2019. The new processors should be compatible with existing TRX40 motherboards with a simple BIOS update.

AMD Releases Threadripper Pro Workstation CPUs to the DIY Market

Remember AMD's Threadripper Pro CPUs which went on sale in prebuilt workstations? Well, they're now available for the general public in boxed CPU offerings - if you have the cash for them. The platform offers support for up to 2 TB of DRAM through its eight-channel configuration, 128 lanes of PCIe 4.0 connectivity, and up to 64 cores (128 Threads with the company's Simultaneous Multi Threading [SMT] technology). The best motherboards for these productivity beasts are, according to AMD, WRX80-based motherboards, which start at a pretty negligible $999.

The company's lineup tops out at the flagship Threadripper PRO 3995WX, which is a 64-core/128-thread max-out of the "Rome" MCM, with a max boost frequency of 4.20 GHz ($5,489). Next up is the Threadripper PRO 3975WX, which is a 32-core/64-thread part, clocked up to 4.20 GHz boost ($2,749). Following this, is the Threadripper PRO 3955WX, a 16-core/32-thread part clocked up to 4.30 GHz boost ($1,149). The Threadripper PRO 3945WX, a 12-core/24-thread part clocked up to 4.30 GHz boost, is apparently absent from this release. If you need the current best from AMD apart from their EPYC CPUs, it doesn't get much better than this.

AMD Updates StoreMI with Support for Threadripper Pro and SSD Partitions

In 2018, AMD has decided to introduce a neat concept. By combining HDD with SSD, the technology was named StoreMI. Last year, the technology got re-designed from the ground up and now it reflects a completely safe and efficient way to get a faster PC with little effort. Now, StoreMI is copying the most used files onto a faster drive (SSD), and all the Windows calls are redirected to the copied files on the faster drive. By providing optimizations for storage, AMD has managed to provide a nice performance uplift for all owners of AMD Ryzen processors. However, today the company has introduced another update to its technology bringing in even more features.

Starting with the support for Ryzen Threadripper Pro, AMD now supports these processors for TRX40 and WRX80 motherboard chipsets as well. Next in line is a feature that supports SSD partitions. Now SSD partition can be used as a cache device. If you have an AMD X570, B550, 400 Series, X399, TRX40, or WRX80 motherboard, you can use the StoreMI software, which you can download here.

AMD Ryzen Threadripper PRO Released to the DIY Segment, Available from March

AMD today announced that the Ryzen Threadripper PRO workstation processors will be directly available for purchase from March 2021. Until now, the processors were exclusively available as options for the Lenovo ThinkStation P620 workstation. The processors are being released alongside a small selection of compatible motherboards by ASUS and GIGABYTE. The Threadripper PRO processors are built in the sWRX8 package, and compatible with the AMD WRX80 chipset. From what we can tell, these processors are not compatible with sTRX4 motherboards.

What sets the Ryzen Threadripper PRO apart from the regular Ryzen Threadripper 3000 series is that it's a fully unlocked "Rome" multi-chip module re-configured for the workstation, with up to 64 CPU cores, 8-channel DDR4 memory, and 128 PCI-Express Gen 4 lanes. In comparison, the Ryzen Threadripper 3000 chips only feature 4-channel memory, and fewer 72 PCIe Gen 4 lanes from the SoC. The PIB (processor in box) retail package of the Ryzen Threadripper PRO looks rather plain compared to the PC enthusiast-focused Threadripper 3000, with a simple paperboard box that packs the processor, an Asetek AIO CLC adapter, and a spring-loaded screwdriver that's tuned for the sWRX80 socket.

AMD Ryzen Threadripper 5000 Series "Genesis Peak" Processor Lineup Could Begin with a 16-Core Model

AMD is set to introduce its next-generation of Ryzen Threadripper processors in the coming weeks, and rumors are suggesting that it may happen at this year's CES. The new Ryzen Threadripper platform is codenamed Genesis Peak. If we take a look at the current 3000 series "Castle Peak" Threadripper processors, they were launched on CES 2020, with availability in February. So we are assuming that the upcoming 5000 "Genesis Peak" series is going to launch at the virtual CES event, during AMD's show. Thanks to the information from Yuri "1usmus" Bubliy, we found out that AMD is going to start the next-generation Threadripper lineup with a 16 core processor. "1usmus" posted a riddle on Twitter, that is actually a hex code that translates to "GENESIS 16 CORES".

The current generation of Threadripper Castle Peak processors is starting at 24 cores, and going up to 64-core models, so it would be interesting to see where AMD sees the 16-core model in the stack and why it chose to do it. The exact specifications of this processor are unknown, so we have to wait for the announcement event. It is also unknown if the existing TRX40 motherboard will offer support for Zen 3 based Genesis Peak 5000 series Threadripper processors or will AMD introduce a new platform for it.

GIGABYTE Unveils AMD Ryzen Threadripper Pro Motherboard for Servers

AMD Ryzen Threadripper Pro line of HEDT/Workstation processors were a nothingburger for the DIY PC crowd as it was launched exclusively through Lenovo for its ThinkStation P620 line of workstations. These processors are a step-up from the retail Threadripper 3000 series, as they feature the full 8-channel DDR4 memory interface, and 128 PCI-Express Gen 4 lanes of the "Zen 2" based "Rome" MCM. The retail Threadripper 3000 chips only feature a quad-channel (4-channel) memory interface.

GIGABYTE has developed a custom server motherboard based on the AMD WRX80 chipset that drives the Lenovo ThinkStation P620. The new WRX80 SU8 motherboard by GIGABYTE features a single sWRX8 CPU socket, supporting Threadripper Pro processors up to the Threadripper Pro 3995WX. It features seven PCI-Express 4.0 x16 slots, three 64 Gbps U.2 ports, two M.2-22110 slots, and eight DDR4 DIMM slots, each with its own dedicated memory channel. GIGABYTE also used the lavish PCIe budget of this platform to give the board dual 10 GbE interfaces. The board also comes with an ASPEED IPMI remote management chip. GIGABYTE is a server vendor, and this board's unveiling could hint at the likelihood of AMD opening up availability of the Threadripper Pro to other OEM vendors, ending Lenovo's exclusivity.

AMD Looks to Keep Performance, Efficiency Gains Momentum With Zen 4, RDNA 3, and Commitment to Threadripper

AMD's Executive Vice President Rick Bergman in an interview with The Street shed some light on the company's future plans for Zen 4 and RDNA 3, even as we are still reeling from (or coming in to) Zen 3 and RDNA 2's launches. Speaking on RDNA 3, Rick Bergman mentioned the company's commitment to achieve the same 50% performance-per-watt increase they achieved with RDNA 2, and had some interesting takes on the matter of why this is actually one of the most important metrics:
Rick BergmanIt just matters so much in many ways, because if your power is too high -- as we've seen from our competitors -- suddenly our potential users have to buy bigger power supplies, very advanced cooling solutions. And in a lot of ways, very importantly, it actually drives the [bill of materials] of the board up substantially. This is a desktop perspective. And invariably, that either means the retail price comes up, or your GPU cost has to come down. We focused on that for RDNA 2. It's a big focus on RDNA 3 as well.
