ASUS Sneaks Out Intel W680 Based mATX Motherboard for LGA-1700 Workstations

For those looking to build something more professional than your average run of the mill PC, ASUS new Pro WS W680M-ACE SE motherboard might be the thing you've been looking for. The Intel W680 chipset based board sports a mATX form factor and packs in a range of rather unusual features that you more often would find on a board from Supermicro or Tyan than ASUS. One such feature is onboard BMC remote management via an ASpeed AST2600 SoC which features a pair of Arm Cortex A7 cores and a Cortex M3, as well as a dedicated 2D graphics chip. The board also sports a SlimSAS port which supports either four SATA drives or a single PCIe 4.0 x4 storage device, although ASUS doesn't support any cables in the box for the port.

As this is a workstation motherboard, it obviously supports ECC memory and in this case we're talking DDR5 with full transactional ECC support, rather than the on-die ECC that all DDR5 features. Other more common motherboard features include a pair of PCIe 4.0 x4 NMVe M.2 slots, a single PCIe 5.0 x16 slot, a PCIe 4.0 x4 slot and a PCIe 3.0 x1 slot. The board also has a pair of 2.5 Gbps Ethernet port and a third 1 Gbps Ethernet port which is connected the AST2600, a 10 Gbps USB 3.2 Gen 2 Type-C port, as well as a DisplayPort and HDMI port, plus a VGA port which again is connected to the AST2600. ASUS promises 24/7 reliability at ambient temperatures of up to 45 degrees C and a relative humidity of up to 80 percent. The board also comes with ASUS' Control Center Express, which is ASUS' IT management software. No word on pricing, but the ATX sized version retails for around US$330, suggesting that the mATX version should be somewhat cheaper.

Dell Launches the UltraSharp U3824DW 38-inch Ultra-wide Curved Monitor

Dell has added a new display to its UltraSharp range and this time around we're looking at a 38-inch ultra-wide display with a resolution of 3840 x 1600 pixels. The display uses an IPS Black panel with a 2000:1 contrast ratio and it covers 100 percent of the sRGB and REC.709 colour gamuts, as well as 98 percent of the DCI-P3 and Display P3 colour gamuts. Sadly it only has a brightness of 300 cd/m² and it's unclear if this is an 8-bit + FRC or a true 10-bit panel, as Dell only mentions support for 1.07 billion colours. It uses a standard WLED backlight, so no fancy miniLED backlight here and as this display is intended for work use, it also only appears to support 60 Hz refresh rate with a response time of 8 ms in normal mode.

Other features include a built-in KVM switch courtesy of a pair of USB-C ports, with the primary supporting USB PD up to 90 W, as well as DP Alt mode, with the second port only supporting USB 3.2 Gen 2 data at up to 10 Gbps. Other inputs include two HDMI 2.1 ports and one DP 1.4, while the outputs consist of five USB 3.2 Gen 2 10 Gbps Type-A ports, two USB-C 3.2 Gen 2 10 Gbps ports, a 2.5 Gbps Ethernet jack and a 3.5 mm audio line out jack. One interesting feature is that the built in Ethernet supports network boot, something that isn't a common feature on monitors and it also has the ability to lock the wired port to one of the two connected computers in KVM mode. The stand supports height, swivel and tilt adjustment. The asking price for the U3824DW is US$1,529.99 and it's available from Dell now.

Sabrent Launches Thunderbolt 4 KVM Switch

KVM switches are either one of those things you need or you don't have much use for, however Sabrent has launched a new Thunderbolt 4 based KVM switch that differs from your average KVM switch in a few ways. As any KVM switch, it allows two computers to share peripherals and displays, but it also supports up to 60 Watt USB PD charging of laptops. The latter is something Sabrent has offered on its USB-C KVM switches, but this time around the power adapter for the KVM switch handles both devices, unlike its USB-C KVM switches which required a USB-C PD charger per device, with the power being passed through the KVM switch.

The Thunderbolt 4 KVM switch lacks any traditional display outputs, relying entirely on Thunderbolt 4 for display connectivity, although DP Alt mode over USB-C is supported and each output supports up to 8K 60 Hz output with DSC 1.2 or 5K 60 Hz without DSC. The KVM switch supports three Thunderbolt 4 devices, four USB 3.2 Gen 2 Type-A devices and two inputs via Thunderbolt 4, with all USB ports supporting data speeds of up to 10 Gbps. It also comes with a switch button, which means you can hide the KVM switch out of sight and still have easy access to switch between devices. Sabrent is asking for US$299 for its Thunderbolt KVM switch, which is a steep premium over its USB-C KVM switch which is currently selling for US$119.99.

ASMedia's Delayed USB4 Host Controller is Nearly Here

Regular readers of TPU might remember our in-depth USB4 article that we posted almost a year ago, but since then, very little has happened and ASMedia has as yet to make its ASM4242 USB4 host controller available to its partners and then ASM2464 USB4 to PCIe 4.0 bridge was suffering the same fate until May this year, when it was released to ASMedia's customers. It turns out most of it is related to USB-IF certification and the USB4 design documentation, as the certification wasn't quite ready for a third party host controller and the design documents were—shall we say—less than complete and relied too heavily on the Thunderbolt 3 spec. This meant that ASMedia had to retest and redo a lot of work they had done, due to a certain spec donator having assumed that other companies knew how it had designed its Thunderbolt products.

The good news is that we should see the ASM4242 in the market before the end of this year and ASMedia is busy testing it and its ASM2464 with a wide range of products to make sure compatibility is as good as possible. In the company suite at Computex, ASMedia was showing the ASM2464 connected to Apple's M2 silicon, as well as Intel's latest CPUs with integrated Thunderbolt 4 support. There had been some performance related issues from Apple's side, but this has apparently been resolved in a recent update from Apple. As far as Intel is concerned, there are no compatibility issues with the 13th and possibly 12th gen mobile chips, but older Thunderbolt hardware might require a firmware update, which may or may not exist. Older Intel hardware also doesn't perform as well as its most recent solutions, but it doesn't mean there will be compatibility issues outright. As for AMD, ASMedia informed TPU that there were no issues, since AMD has a USB4 implementation in its mobile products that follow the USB-IF spec.

ADATA XPG Storage and Memory Products at Computex: Project Neonstorm, Legend 970, Caster RGB DDR5-9000

ADATA and XPG, its gamer focused sub-brand, unveiled a plethora of memory and storage products at the 2023 Computex. We begin with PC memory, and we see the company showing off its upcoming models of the XPG DDR5 memory targeting enthusiasts. These include the XPG Caster RGB DDR5, which is capable of DDR5-9000, the XPG Lancer RGB ROG edition, capable of DDR5-7200, and the company's overclocking-capable DDR5-6400 R-DIMM targeting Xeon W workstations. The company also showed us "Project NeonStorm." This is an innovative new SSD cooling system that uses a self-contained liquid cooler.

The way this liquid cooler works is that a high conductivity heat spreader transfers heat to a chamber containing a coolant fluid. This coolant heats up an aluminium alloy tube via convection. The inner wall of this tube serves as an airflow channel for a 20 mm fan. ADATA claims that this solution offers "over 20% better heat dissipation compared to SSDs without water cooling." This is also one of the very first SSDs we've seen that utilize Silicon Motion SM2508 PCIe Gen 5 NVMe controller. ADATA claims sequential reads of up to 14 GB/s, with up to 12 GB/s sequential writes. The drive comes in capacity-based models of up to 8 TB (could include 2 TB, 4 TB, and 8 TB). ADATA also showed off the Legend 970 PCIe Gen 5 NVMe SSD that uses a Phison E26-series controller, and comes in capacities of 1 TB and 2 TB. This drive belts out up to 10 GB/s reads, with up to 10 GB/s writes.

FSP CUT592 is a Mid-tower with Easy Cable Management

At the 2023 Computex, FSP showed us their CUT592 ATX mid-tower case designed for easy cable routing. Its core design innovation sees the right-side wall of the bottom partition pushed to the edge, with openings into the crawl-space behind the motherboard tray, minimizing at least one tight bend from the PSU cables from pushing against the right side panel. Also, not the entire motherboard tray has a crawl space, it's been recessed toward the front portion such that two 120 mm fans fit in there (from a 240 mm AIO), better utilizing that space. The case has been extensively tested with custom-design GeForce RTX 4090 graphics cards to ensure clearance. The top- and front panels of the case each support 360 mm radiators. The front panel can be switched between a finer mesh and a coarser one. Front panel connectivity includes a 10 Gbps-capable USB 3.2 type-C port, besides type-A.
