DisplayPort 2.0 was supposed to see its implementation beginning by the end of 2020, but that time has come and gone without a single DisplayPort 2.0-touting product on sight. According to VESA, the rollout has been delayed mostly due to the COVID-19 pandemic, which prevented the standards body to perform its PlugTest events, where engineers and hardware developers convene to discuss, tinker, and decide on the standard's implementation. VESA held multiple of these events per year, but none in 2020, due to the COVID-19 pandemic; thus, the delay we are now witnessing surged.

VESA plans to have their first 2021 PlugTest event in Spring of this year, however, and aims to see products on the shelves later, and likely not before 2H 2020. The standards body said that there are, indeed, DisplayPort 2.0 monitors currently in-development, but that these too have been affected by the lack of PlugTests. DisplayPort 2.0 is an update to the current 1.4 implementation, and currently, there are no launched products (monitors, graphics cards, etc) that can make use of the new version. The new standard will technically support up to 80 Gbps max, nearly three times the currently available bandwidth in the DisplayPort 1.4 spec. DisplayPort Alt Mode 2.0 also brings most of these capabilities to USB Type-C connectors via the USB 4.0 revision.

AOC has announced a new addition to their AGON line of gaming monitors in the form of the AGON AG493UCX. This is a beastly monitor with a 49" diagonal and 5K resolution with a Super Ultra-Wide aspect ratio of 32:9 (with a resolution of 5120 x 1440 pixels). The panel type is VA, which promises increased contrast ratios against those typically found in IPS panels (3000:1, in this case). AOC is promising 120 Hz refresh rates with a 1 ms (MPRT) response times with MBR backlight. There is also support for VRR technologies such as FreeSync and G-Sync (compatible).

Display brightness is quoted at 550 cd/m², which is just shy of a DisplayHDR 600 certification, but comfortably achieves the VESA DisplayHDR 400 certification. The monitor isn't a slouch in terms of color display either, being better than your average VA panel: the display is factory-calibrated and ships with a guaranteed dE <2, and coverage for 16.7 millions colors across a 93% DCI-P3 gamut coverage (and 121% sRGB coverage). I/O is handled by 2x DisplayPort 1.4, 2x HDMI 2.0, 1x USB type-C, 3x USB ports and 1x an audio output. 2x 5 W speakers are built in to the screen and the stand offers tilt, height and swivel adjustments. No word on pricing as of yet.

Update December 10th 2020: AOC has just made the AGON AG493UCX available for purchase. Initial availability is pegged for Europe with a price tag set at £899 / €899.

GIGABYTE launched the BRIX S line of desktop mini PCs powered by AMD Ryzen 4000U "Renoir" 15 W mobile processors. These mini-PCs are almost NUC-sized, measuring 46.8 mm x 119.5 mm x 119.5 mm (HxWxD), and pack a 2.5-inch SATA drive-bay in addition to an M.2-2280 slot with both PCI-Express 3.0 x4 and SATA 6 Gbps wiring. Connectivity is highlighted by four display outputs—one each of HDMI 2.0a, DisplayPort, and two USB-C with DP passthroughs. Networking connectivity includes 2.5 GbE and 802.11ax + Bluetooth 5.1 WLAN.

As for the specific models, the GB-BRR7H-4700 is powered by a Ryzen 7 4700U, the GB-BRR5H-4500 by a Ryzen 5 4500U, and the GB-BRR3H-4300 by the Ryzen 3 4300U. All three feature two DDR4 SO-DIMM slots, and a vacant M.2-2280 slot, so you're expected to drop in your own memory and storage. All three include VESA mounting brackets, so you can tuck them behind your monitor, if it has VESA wall-mounts. The power bricks included with all three can put out 135 W of power. The company didn't reveal pricing.

MSI today introduced the Optix MAG271VCR, a 27-inch curved gaming monitor. It introduces a new body design language that sees ARGB LED diffusers behind the monitor in an "X" motif. The monitor features a VA panel with 1800R curvature, 178°/178° viewing angles, and 16:9 aspect ratio. It offers Full HD (1920 x 1080 pixels) resolution, 165 Hz refresh rate, and 1 ms (MPRT) response time, along with support for VESA Adaptive Sync, low flicker, and low blue-light. Inputs include DisplayPort 1.2a and HDMI 2.0. The stand allows for tilt, swivel, and height adjustments. An earphones jack that pulls audio from the display connection, and a 2-port USB 2.0 hub make for the rest of it. The company didn't reveal pricing.

ASUS today introduced the VA27AQSB, a 27-inch monitor for white-collar desktops that stay on for most of the day. This WQHD (2560 x 1440 pixels) monitor features TUV Rhineland-certified flicker-free technology (non-PWM method of LED backlit brightness adjustment), and blue light reduction technology, which both work toward reducing eye strain. It uses an IPS panel with 5 ms response time, 75 Hz refresh rate, 350 cd/m² maximum brightness, 1000:1 static contrast ratio, and 178°/178° viewing angles. The display supports both AMD FreeSync and NVIDIA G-SYNC (compatible). Display inputs include HDMI 1.4a and DisplayPort 1.2a. The stand allows height, tilt, and 90° rotation. The panel itself features VESA wall mounts, so you can take advantage of the thin bezels for multi-display rigs. 2 W stereo speakers, headset jack, and a 2-port USB 2.0 hub makes for the rest of its feature-set. ZOTAC today introduced the ZBOX C-series Edge C1341 mini PC. The company had exhibited this NUC-sized contraption at its 2020 International CES booth. Measuring just 147.2 mm x 147.2 mm x 32.1 mm (WxDxH), this ZBOX features VESA mounts, and can be tucked away behind a monitor that supports the standard. Under the hood is some pretty basic hardware, with a 4-core/4-thread Intel Celeron N4100 SoC that has UHD Graphics 600, 4 GB of hardwired single-channel DDR4 memory (expandable with an empty DDR4 SO-DIMM slot to dual-channel), and an included 64 GB M.2 SATA SSD.

Display outputs include DP and HDMI. Networking includes two 1 GbE wired and 802.11ac + Bluetooth 4.2 WLAN. USB connectivity includes three 5 Gbps USB 3.1 ports, from which one is type-C, and two type-A ports. A microSD card reader and headset jack make for the rest of it. The C-Series Edge C1341 runs completely fanless, with its ridged top panel doubling as a heatsink for the 6-Watt TDP SoC. A 40 W power brick comes included. Windows 10 Pro comes pre-installed. The company didn't reveal pricing.

ASUS at its Asia ROG event announced a new monitor, approaching stores and shores (eventually). The ROG Swift PG329Q is being launched with a "Super Kill" marketing line, which aims to showcase just how impressive this monitor will be in aiding users' gaming capabilities. The ROG Swift PG329Q features a 32" "Fast IPS" panel - fast IPS here meaning that it's capable of running at 175 Hz whilst keeping a 1 ms Gray-to-Gray response time - all of this with IPS' renowned color rendition.

The monitor features a sane 2560 x 1440 resolution and HDR 600 certification from VESA, and thanks to the usage of Quantum Dot tech, will be able to offer 98% DCI-P3 color gamut coverage and 160% sRGB ultra-wide color gamut coverage. The monitor supports Adaptive Sync tech (whether via FreeSync or G-Sync compatible), as well as ASUS' ELMB SYNC technology. There's also the usual RGB tech going on in the back of the monitor. The ASUS ROG Swift PG329Q will be released in the fourth quarter of this year. No word on pricing, but expect a monitor with these features to be leaning heavily on the $ side of the equation.

Acer America announced the new Nitro XZ2 Series monitors offering gamers smooth and immersive gameplay with AMD Radeon FreeSync, VESA Certified DisplayHDR 400 and up to a fast 1 ms response time with prices starting at $199.99. The series includes the 31.5-inch Nitro XZ322QU and 27-inch Nitro XZ272 supporting up to a speedy 165 Hz refresh rate and the 23.6-inch 144 Hz Nitro XZ242Q. Thanks to Visual Response Boost (VRB), they deliver up to a 1 ms response time, resulting in smoothly rendered images with less noticeable blur in fast moving scenes.

"Our newest Nitro series monitors combine speed, FreeSync and curved panels to offer fun and exciting gaming at a great value," said Ronald Lau, Acer America director - stationary computing. ASUS today introduced the ROG Strix XG17AHP, a variant of the ROG Strix XG17AHPE 17.3-inch portable gaming monitor the company launched in January. The new XG17AHP includes an innovative new tripod stand. The feet of the stand fold outwards from the main stock, which is telescopic, and can extend in height. This lets you orient the display like a conventional desktop monitor, and not just like an iPad with its cover folded into a prism-like shape. The magnetic smart cover is still included in the package, so you even have that option.

These aside, the ROG Strix XG17AHP is identical to the ROG Strix XG17AHPE from January. It is a 17.3-inch 16:9 IPS display with Full HD resolution, 240 Hz refresh rate, features VESA Adaptive Sync, and a non-glare surface. Since it's meant to be a portable gaming monitor that you pair with your gaming notebook, it packs a 7,800 mAh battery that can provide up to 3 hours of use on a full charge. A USB-C connector is used both for recharging as well as DisplayPort passthrough input; while the monitor also features a micro-HDMI input (cables included that convert this to a standard HDMI). A premium ESS Sabre DAC converts digital audio from the display inputs to high-quality audio for the display's internal speakers, or a 3.5 mm jack. ASUS also includes a pouch that lets you carry the display around. By itself, the display weighs about 1.06 kg (1.76 kg with the tripod stand).

Update Jul 13th: ASUS revealed that the XG17AHP is priced at USD $599.

ASUS today rolled out the VA27DQSB Eye Care Monitor, designed for multi-display setups in office environments, as you can stack these display along the sides and above, in a 1x3 or 2x3 configuration. The VA27DQSB is a 27-inch monitor with Full HD (1920 x 1080 pixels) resolution, an IPS panel with 178°/178° viewing angles, 75 Hz refresh rate, VESA Adaptive Sync support, and TUV Rhienland-certified low blue-light and flicker-free brightness adjustments (uses a non-PWM method of dimming the LEDs). The included stand offers height adjustments by 150 mm, 90° rotation, tilt up to 35°, and sideways pivot, besides being detachable for use with VESA-compatible multi-monitor mounts. The company didn't reveal pricing.

The recently announced Phillips 272B1G monitor features a 27 inch IPS 1080P screen, with a 4 ms (Grey to Grey) response time, 250 nits brightness, 1000:1 contrast ratio, and 76% NTSC/98% sRGB coverage. The IPS panel allows for wide viewing angles of 178º (H)/178º (V) and comes with an anti-glare, 3H, Haze 25% coating.

The monitor includes several energy-saving features such as PowerSensor and LightSensor along with a "Super-energy-efficient" design. PowerSensor uses an infrared sensor to detect the presence of a user and can automatically reduce screen brightness in the case of absence reducing power draw up to 70% while increasing monitor lifespan. The LightSensor feature uses a smart sensor to adjust the screen brightness depending on the light conditions in the room.

MSI today announced the release of not one, not two, but four monitors to their Optix lineup, under the Optix PAG272 family. These monitors aim to cater to all budgets, apparently, as their features vary across resolution and refresh rates according to the model number. RGB lighting on the back of the monitors is stock across the lineup. Starting from the top-down in terms of specs, the Optix PAG272URV features a 27", IPS panel sporting 4K resolution, 60 Hz refresh rate, a 4 ms GtG response time, FreeSync (non-Premium), and VESA Display HDR 400 certification. I/O is taken care of by 2x HDMI (1.4), 1x HDMI (2.0) and 1x DisplayPort (1.2).

That's not the most impressive display, though - that honor is reserved for the Optix PAG272QR2. The Optix PAG272QR2 features a 27", IPS panel sporting 1440p resolution, 165 Hz refresh rate, a 1 ms GtG response time, FreeSync Premium, and an HDR-ready badge (with maximum brightness set at 300 nits). I/O is taken care of by 2x HDMI (2.0) and 2x DisplayPort (1.4). The more interesting spec in this panel, though, is the addition of a Quantum Dot layer, which greatly improves color rendition: MSI claim 10 bit colors (8 bit + FRC) with 150% of the sRGB color gamut coverage, alongside 99% of the Adobe RGB color gamut, and 98% of the DCI-P3 color space, which makes this an interesting panel not only for gaming, but also for color-sensitive tasks.

EVE Distribution, the company that's already crowd-sourced the Microsoft Surface-rival Eve Hybrid, which launched to very positive feedback from the tech community (even with the incredible delays in shipping and distributing the purchased Eve Hybrids, though the company now says they've rebuilt their logistics and distribution mechanisms. Now, the company is eyeing next-generation gaming with its Spectrum monitor lineup, which aim to be both PC-centric and console-centric gaming monitors.

The three monitor models all share LG as a panel source (specifically, the same panel used in the LG UltraGear 27GL850. All of them also share the same IPS technology with 1 ms response times, 98% DCI-P3 and 100% sRGB coverage, as well as the same 1,000:1 contrast ratio. Freesync Premium (from 48 Hz VRR support through to the maximum refresh rate of every monitor) and G-Sync Compatible support is standard on all monitors. Differences start to appear when looking at maximum resolution, brightness and refresh rates.

Display specialist AOC announces the launch of five new Full HD monitors: three curved (C27G2ZU, C27G2ZE and C32G2ZE) and two flat models (24G2ZU, 24G2ZE) that competitive gamers have been longing for.

The new monitors range from 23.8" (60.4 cm) and 27" (68.6 cm) up to 31.5" (80 cm) and offer breathtaking specifications: a 240 Hz refresh rate and just 0.5 ms (1 ms for the 31.5" version) MPRT create an incredibly "connected" feel to the game world. All models additionally come equipped with FreeSync Premium with LFC (Low Framerate Compensation) support, providing smooth game visuals without tearing or stuttering.

The Video Electronics Standards Association (VESA ) today announced that it has released version 2.0 of the DisplayPort Alternate Mode ("Alt Mode") standard. DisplayPort Alt Mode 2.0 provides seamless interoperability with the new USB4 specification published by the USB Implementers Forum (USB-IF), and fully enables all of the features in the latest version of the DisplayPort standard (version 2.0) through the USB Type-C (USB-C) connector. With DisplayPort Alt Mode, the USB-C connector can transmit up to 80 Gigabits per second (Gbps) of DisplayPort video data utilizing all four high-speed lanes in the cable, or up to 40 Gbps with simultaneous SuperSpeed USB data delivery. VESA anticipates first products incorporating DisplayPort Alt Mode 2.0 to appear on the market in 2021.

DisplayPort 2.0, which was introduced in June 2019, provides up to a 3X increase in data bandwidth performance compared to the previous version of DisplayPort, as well as new capabilities to address future performance requirements of displays. These include beyond-8K resolutions, higher refresh rates and high dynamic range (HDR) support at higher resolutions, improved support for multiple display configurations, as well as improved user experience with augmented/virtual (AR/VR) displays, including support for 4K-and-beyond VR resolutions. Featuring the highly efficient 128b/132b channel coding shared with USB4, DisplayPort 2.0 delivers a maximum payload of 77.37 Gbps across four lanes (up to 19.34 Gbps per lane)—supporting ultra-high display performance configurations such as an 8K (7680x4320) display with 60 Hz refresh rate with full-color 30 bpp 4:4:4 HDR resolution uncompressed, and 16K (15360x8460) 60 Hz display with 30 bpp 4:4:4 HDR resolution with compression. LG introduced the UltraGear 34GN850-B, a 34-inch, 21:9, curved, ultra-wide gaming monitor, a revision of the UltraGear 34GN850, denoted by the "-B" in the model name. The monitor uses a Nano-IPS panel by LG Display, which offers UWQHD (3440 x 1440 pixels) resolution. The panel offers 144 Hz refresh rate and 1 ms (GTG) response time, and support for a constellation of proprietary features: AMD FreeSync 2 Premium, NVIDIA G-SYNC (compatible), HDR10, DisplayHDR 400.

The UltraGear 34GN850-B offers coverage of 98% of DCI-P3 color gamut, 10 bpc (1.07 billion colors), and feature such as Dynamic Action Sync (lag reduction), Black Stabilizer (improves visibility in dark areas of the scene), and overlay crosshair. Other specs include 178°/178° viewing-angles, 1,000:1 static- and dynamic mega-contrast ratios; and 400 cd/m² maximum brightness. Non-display features include a 2-port USB 3.0 hub, a headset stand, and VESA wall-mounts. Display inputs include two HDMI 2.0 and a DisplayPort. It is available from late-April at an unknown price, although the original 34GN850 can be found around $900 in some places.

The world's first Microsoft Azure AI notebooks, GIGABYTE's AERO series laptops are equipped with artificial intelligence that detects the use of applications and collects configuration data of processors, graphics, and fans. Learning from the Azure cloud-based database, the AI automatically optimizes the laptop's configuration to offer a stable and comfortable work environment for creators, thus eliminating the need for manual configurations. With Intel Core i9-10980HK processors, NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2080 SUPER graphics cards, and improved AI, the new laptops receive a significant boost in performance, executing 3D rendering on Cinema 4D 30% faster than the previous generation could.
