8BitDo Introduces New Retro R8 Mouse Model: "NES-inspired" N Edition

Late last November, 8BitDo announced the transparent "classic Xbox-inspired" Retro 87 mechanical keyboard and a matching Retro R8 wireless mouse. The brand tends to borrow visual language from much older hardware—mostly from the 1980s and 1990s—but Microsoft's debut home console effort (in Halo 2 Collector's Edition form) stimulated 8BitDo's design team. As of last week, the manufacturer has opened up pre-orders for another Retro R8 mouse model. The "N Edition" variant will be deployed with identical internals—as seen within its translucent forebear; namely Pixart's PAW 3395 optical sensor and Kailh's Sword GM X micro switches—but it features a familiar off-white/multi-gray tones/red button aesthetic. 8BitDo's product page does not mention Nintendo's Nintendo Entertainment System (NES) by name, but promotional imagery showcases a return to truly retro pastures. The Retro R8 N Edition SKU is also marketed as a "perfect companion" to the brand's first attempt at making a mechanical keyboard: the Retro 87. 8BitDo's official webstore advertises a May 22 launch for their Retro R8 N Edition wireless mouse—the pre-order price is $49.99 (+ shipping fee).

GuliKit Teases Imminent Launch of Elves 2 Pro Controller

GuliKit showcased "Elves 2" prototype controllers at Gamescom 2024; last summer's product booth—in Cologne, Germany—also displayed an intriguing "Libra MAX" model. Enthusiasts have demanded more third-party options that sport "symmetrical" control layouts with non-PlayStation-esque ergonomic designs. GuliKit's "Elves" product series has borrowed some design inspiration from Sega's various Saturn controller models. The appearance of fairly final-looking units—last August—prompted much online interest, but the brand's fanbase has grown increasingly impatient over the past six+ months. Many expected an Elves 2 SKU—with an off-white finish—to reach retail not long after last year's official unveiling. Many months later, Amazon product listings were discovered, complete with a (now missed) January release date.

Thankfully, GuliKit's social media account has started to promote an upcoming—May—arrival of their Elves 2 Pro white and black controller models—advertised as featuring "retro looks" combined with "pro performance." At the time of writing, the manufacturer has not published a dedicated product page on its official website. Teaser material lists the usual mod cons: Hall Effect sticks (anti-drift tech): maglev vibration, wired + Bluetooth connectivity, and a compact internal battery with (up to) twenty hours of operation. The GuliKit Elves 2 Pro will be a multi-platform controller—compatible with Nintendo Switch, PCs, iOS & Android mobile devices. The Elves 2 Pro's D-pad design could make it an attractive option to a growing audience of Fightpad fanatics. 8Bitdo's M30 model—borrowing DNA from Sega's Genesis/Mega Drive controller—is another popular accessory, albeit minus "modern" analogue sticks.

Leveraging the Company's experience in design-technology co-optimization for nanosheet transistor, TSMC is also evolving its TSMC NanoFlex standard cell architecture to NanoFlex Pro, enabling greater performance, power efficiency and design flexibility.

Analogue 3D Launch Window Pushed into July, FPGA-powered Console Previously Delayed into Q1

Analogue's modern reimagining of Nintendo's N64 home console has hit another pre-release obstacle. Their Analogue 3D model was first revealed in 2023, with a projected 2024 launch on the cards. The system has experienced a series of setbacks—prior to the latest official announcement, customers were expecting to receive finalized hardware by now (first quarter of 2025). Once again, the company has revised release timeframes for its $249.99 FPGA-powered console—according to an official "3D Preorder FAQ": "Analogue 3D was originally available for pre-order at the end of 2024, (and) scheduled to ship Q1 2025. Shipping is delayed (as of March 18th, 2025) and is now shipping by July 2025. We are working hard to get your 3D order in hands ASAP, and appreciate your patience. If you have an open pre-order no action is needed. As always, if you'd like to cancel your pre-order at any time, Analogue has always had a no questions asked, 100% refund policy for pre-orders."

Analogue's promotional materials showcase a very slick-looking premium reinterpretation (in black or white) of the classic N64 system. The R&D team spent: "nearly four years engineering it in FPGA. No more incompatibilities found in software emulation like input lag, graphic/audio inaccuracies, timing/frame rate issues and more. For the first time, you can re-experience the N64 exactly as it was meant to be, without compromise." According to product pages, a controller is not bundled in with the Analogue 3D package. Authentic front panel connectors indicate customers having to reuse original "trident-shaped" N64 (NUS-005) controllers, or third-party equivalents. Certain promo shots show off 8BitDo's recently introduced 64 Bluetooth Controller. Given Analogue's revised schedule, this wireless gamepad is expected to arrive weeks ahead of its natural partner piece.

KYSONA Uranus Pro Wireless Gaming Mouse Reimagines Classic Roccat Ergonomic Shape

Many hardcore fans of the Roccat brand will lament last year's absorption of designs/IPs into the Turtle Beach product portfolio. Five years earlier, the German PC gaming accessory maker was acquired by the larger North American organization—at the time, mouse enthusiasts expressed worries regarding a sudden cut-off of popular models. The long-running Kone series was a main topic of conversation. Pleasingly, Roccat's engineering department continued to deliver new designs and refreshes of old favorites well into the early 2020s. The Kone Pure Air and Pure SEL were the team's last models to emerge under the banner of Roccat, prior to 2024's full Turtle Beach takeover. Confusingly, this somewhat unfaithful Kone design was only made available to a South Korean customer base.

Kone Pure models—in wireless (Air) and wired (SEL) forms—eventually trickled out to wider global market regions, albeit with Turtle Beach logos printed on their outer shells and packaging. A lukewarm reception from the gaming mouse community prompted further speculation—would the Kone lineage end in 2024? Chinese gaming mouse manufacturers have often "brazenly" cloned the designs of many Western-developed models. Loyal fans and brand purists would normally decry the emergence of a throwback to classic Roccat Pure times, but KYSONA's recently unveiled rendition is being celebrated. Their Uranus Pro wireless gaming mouse offering has gained traction in the West, thanks to a prominent YouTuber's recommendation and positive feedback from owners of early import units. KYSONA is hardly a big name, but they are involved in the contract manufacturing of peripherals for "visible" brands—including AJAZZ, Attack Shark, and DELUX.

Asus Vivobook 18 Launched With AMD Ryzen 7 260 APU and 144 Hz Display

There is no shortage of folks who have modest performance expectations from their systems, but require a large display for entertainment and creativity purposes. ASUS has introduced a massive new laptop seemingly intended for such people, dubbed the Vivobook 18. As the name suggests, the laptop sports a large 18.3-inch display with an aspect ratio of 16:10. As we shall find out later, the product is affordably priced, which justifies the 1080p IPS display. At its size, a higher-resolution panel would've certainly been a welcome addition. Thankfully, however, the display boasts a refresh rate of 144 Hz, which should allow for an excellent motion experience. The display is also claimed to cover 100% of the sRGB color gamut, which is pretty neat.

At its heart, the Vivobook 18 is powered by the Ryzen 7 260 APU with 8 Zen 4 cores and 16 threads paired with up to 32 GB of DDR5 memory. The APU is no slouch, and packs enough grunt to trade blows with the Intel Core Ultra 9 185H CPU. There is no option for discrete graphics, which means that any graphically demanding task will have to solely rely on the integrated Radeon 780M iGPU. For non-intensive workloads and casual lightweight gaming, the RDNA 3-based Radeon 780M should easily suffice. An M.2 2280 PCIe 4.0 x 4 slot takes care of storage requirements, with 512 GB as standard. The memory is also upgradeable, courtesy of the single unpopulated SODIMM slot.

GuliKit "Reloads" KingKong 2 Controller Series with TMR Stick Model

Game controller brands are engaged in a race to update their devices with the latest internal technologies—recent market entries have sported "cutting-edge" TMR analogue joysticks, and more are seemingly in the development pipeline. GuliKit has listed a new "Reloaded" KingKong 2 (KK2) offering that features TMR electromagnetic modules; its model name is (simply) abbreviated to "KK2T." On inspection, the upgraded variant is a visual match for the original black KK2 Pro multi-platform controller (2022). In comparison, the lower-end KK2 model does not sport fancy silver accents. The two mature models utilize Hall Effect sticks—this is another electromagnetic standard; now considered "old hat" by hardcore gaming controller enthusiasts.

TMR and Hall Effect modules are often advertised as "problem free" solutions, when lined up against traditional ALPS encoders. The even older standard has tendency to develop "stick drift"—most notably, the bane of Nintendo Switch Joy-Con owners. The likes of GameSir, 8BitDo, and GuliKit claim that their various modern gamepads are provisioned with "anti-stick drift" and "anti-drift performance" tech. Discerning audience members reckon that Hall Effect modules are not completely immune to developing faults; hence the emergence of TMR alternatives. Curiously, GuliKit's KingKong 3 (KK3) controller series has also received the TMR upgrade treatment. The basic model features "1000-level high precision" sticks, while fancier KK3 PRO and MAX packages make do with Hall Effect units.
