Value & Conclusion

  • The Addonics Pocket DigiDrive eSATA/USB 2.0 will set you back 64 US Dollars at their online store.
  • Cheaper than the Lexar Firewire 800
  • Justified price/performance
  • Excellent read speeds for a card reader
  • Excellent write speeds for a card reader
  • Solid USB 2.0 performance
  • Good construction quality
  • Can be powered via a single USB 2.0 plug when using eSATA
  • Two modes for both SATA and hot-swap capable SATA ports
  • All required cables included
  • Not as fast as an internal CF to SATA adapter
  • Requires hot-swap SATA port to be used like a traditional card reader
  • eSATA requires a separate power source
  • Modes may be a bit confusing
  • Plastic feels a bit rough around the edges
The Addonics Pocket DigiDrive eSATA/USB 2.0 carries a a hefty price premium when compared to traditional USB 2.0 card readers. But even so, it manages to be more affordable than the Lexar Firewire 800 CF reader. As I have mentioned before in the review, Addonics has managed to combine both attributes - flexibiltiy and speed - into a well performing package. There are very few card readers out there, that utilize faster interfaces than USB 2.0 and if you are looking for such a device, the Pocket DigiDrive eSATA is a solid and good investment - just make sure you have a hot-swap capable SATA port to reap the benefits of easy switching between flash media cards.
