The ASRock TRX40 Taichi features a 16 phase VRM in a (6 x 2) + (2x2) configuration.
The Intersil ISL69247 PWM controller supports a maximum of eight phases in various configurations. In order to achieve 16 phases, ASRock uses eight Intersil ISL6617A doublers located on the back of the board.
The doublers are thermally interfaced to the metal backplate with a thick thermal pad. The doublers themselves do not produce significant heat, but do absorb it from the power stages above. I like that ASRock has found a purpose for the backplate beyond structural integrity.
The ASRock TRX40 Taichi uses Intersil Intersil ISL99390 power stages for all 16 phases (12 for the Vcore and 4 for the SOC). These are just about top of the line when it comes to smart power stages, and ASRock has gone with the extra expense to maximize the Taichi's potential with power hungry HEDT CPUs.
The ASRock TRX40 Taichi has a maximum output of 1080 A, which should handle even the monstrous upcoming 3990X.
