Closer Examination

Inside the box, we have the Corsair LAPDOG, the memory foam cushion, instruction manual, a power lead, and a rather long cable to connect the USB 3.0 hub to your PC.

The power adapter actually plugs into the other cable, which gives you a huge overall cable distance; you are limited by the length of the USB lead, but it can be combined with an extension cord if need be. You do already have 16 ft (5 m), however, so you shouldn't run into any problems.

This is what the LAPDOG looks like without the keyboard or mouse installed; it is rather large and has a plastic base with a brushed aluminum fascia. The mouse mat is also out of aluminum, but is covered with a material to ensure your mouse tracks correctly. I actually really like metal mouse pads and usually use a thin skin, such as the Razer Sphex or HyperX Skyn, to give it a textured surface. The surface on the LAPDOG's mouse mat has a very similar feel to what is achieved by using the combination I am used to, so it is the perfect mouse pad for me. I think people who are used to soft mouse pads will need to take some time to get used to it, though, as it does feel strange compared to a soft mouse mat.

Underneath the Corsair LAPDOG are six silver disks. Actually magnets, these hold the removable memory foam cushion in place very well; they are strong enough to allow you to reposition the unit on your lap without being so strong as to have you struggle when it comes to separating the two sections.

The memory foam bottom spans the whole length of the LAPDOG and has been contoured to ensure it is comfortable; the top of it has hidden magnets to ensure it can connect to the top, and there is a hex key, which helps with the keyboard's and mouse's installation. I like how Corsair ensured that the tool is connected to the product. Although hex keys are widely available, there is nothing worse than not being able to find one when you need it. Keeping it together will reduce the likelihood of losing it and makes sure it is readily available.

On the back of the LAPDOG, we have 12v DC input and a USB 3.0 connector. These are for the cables that ensure there is plenty of power for the USB 3.0 hub and enough bandwidth for the data. On the right side of the LAPDOG are two USB 3.0 ports to ensure everything you need is connected right where you need it. Your gaming gear, such as your USB headset or USB drives, can be connected easily, but you can also plug in other, more power hungry items, such as your smartphone or tablet as the ports put out a fast charge current of up to 1.5A each.
