Value and Conclusion

  • The Cougar Surpassion is available for $37.90.
  • Good value for the price
  • Great sensor
  • Fantastic buttons
  • Main button switches rated for 50 million clicks
  • Comfortable for palm gripping with small to medium hands
  • The side grips and surface coating can be slippery for some
  • The weight is rather high for the size, and its distribution is a bit off
  • Not really suitable for bigger hands (at least for a palm grip)
I have to say I was quite impressed by the Cougar Surpassion. Although it is not an expensive mouse at all, it can easily compete with the high-end models. I think it is safe to say that the shape is a gap-filler in the market. With a the hump located at the back and curves like these, the Surpassion doesn't have many opponents out there in this size. Due to its dimensions, it will mainly be comfortable for users with a small to medium hands. The surface coating is something I personally dislike, but other users may find it perfectly suitable.

There is just no way to properly test durability, but due to the used materials, I can safely say that the Surpassion is built to last. With switches rated for 50 million clicks and a sturdy shell like this, it can easily serve its user for long years with proper use. The build quality is very good, with the small quirk of a creaking bottom-right area. I find the 98 grams it weighs bothersome; a mouse with these dimensions should weigh less as it can feel pretty sluggish otherwise.

Sensor-wise, the Surpassion has nothing to be ashamed of since the PixArt PMW3330 does a wonderful job. No input lag and no malfunctions of any kind, it works just flawlessly. Even though the maximum resolution is only 7,200 CPI, I can't see a situation where that should not be enough.

The buttons are just great on this mouse; the main ones lack any unnecessary travel. They feel nice and tactile with a medium tension and use Omron D2FC-F-K switches rated for 50 million clicks. All other buttons feel fantastic too, and the scroll wheel is one of the best I have ever had the chance to try.

As for the mouse feet, I have seen better ones in my mouse-testing days, but I have seen way worse too. They are mediocre when it comes to friction, but have a nice and even glide. The cable is pretty good even though it is a bit too stiff and thick for my taste. The Revenger S and Minos X5 both have better cables, which I would have loved to see used here too. I wouldn't call this a deal breaker though.

Even less costly mice can get nice-looking RGB lighting nowadays, and the Surpassion is a great example. Unfortunately, the lighting options aren't programmable, but the factory presets actually look very nice.

Cougar did a good job with the Surpassion. People who find the shape and size appropriate for their gripping style can consider this as a top choice for any type of use, whether for causal use or hardcore gaming. Moreover, Cougar did show off a few upcoming, retouched variants of this model, of which one is wireless as well! I look forward to presenting you these new editions in the near future, once they are released.
