VSONIC R02-PRO Earphones Review

The Package

The R02-PROs come in a pretty ordinary box. In it the earphones lay very well protected in some foam. With the R02-PROs you also get quite a lot of tips and extra carrying bag. One of the things you notice the first time you hold these earphones in your hands is the fact that the cable rod that extends over the back of the body is made of rubber. It is kind of odd at first, but it makes good sense because it makes the earphones easy to get a firm hold of.

With the R02-PROs you get a well thought out bundle. You will receive four different tips, a carrying bag and a shirt clip. The shirt clip will help to reduce microphonic noise and stop the cable from getting tangled while wearing them.

With every VSONIC R02-PRO you get a small piece of paper with the specifications of the units printed on it. This paper also doubles as a quality test paper where you can see how the earphones measured in the factory.

These in-ears have a bigger body than for example the Head-Direct RE2s. The shape of the body is like a rounded off cone with a rubber back. The rubber part of the body extends out from the center and it acts as a cable stress relief.

Closer Examination

Design wise these earphones are very different compared to the others I have recently had the pleasure of playing around with. The general shape of the body is a rounded cone with a rubber strip going over. The rubber makes the exterior of the earphone grip friendly and easy to pull out and insert. The rubber flap is placed so that the cable exits the body of the IEM through it which should help durability quite a bit.

The R02-PROs are built around a dynamic driver much like Head-Direct's very own RE2s, however, they are aimed at two different markets. VSONIC R02-PROs are much cheaper at only $69 normal retail price compared to the RE2s $119 (available right now as a group buy for only $80).

Right from the start it is clear that these earphones are very well made. The body and tunnel part does not give way to pressure easily and the rubber stem where the cable exits is well adhered to the body. It does not feel like it was constructed with only production cost in mind, like some low-end headphones do. There is good attention to detail and the quality of their build is on par with that of bigger brands such as Ultimate Ears.

Looking at the in-ear from the back you can clearly see the rubber part of the body. This will be useful when you try to take them out or put them in. The main part of the body is made of slippery plastic so the rubber is part is definitely a nice addition to the design. If it had not been for it getting these in-ears in and out would have been a major pain in the ass, because of their cone shaped exterior.

The tunnel part of this in-ear is pretty big and has roughly the same dimensions as that on the RE2s. On the metal like tube the model number is written.

Instead of filters that we see on many IEMs the R02-PROs have a metal grill. It should be transparent from an acoustic point of view.

The mini jack connector on these VSONIC in-ears is done in a 60 degree angle which is pretty odd. It does not make any sense in normal usage scenarios and furthermore I actually think that it makes them incompatible with the iPhone. I would have preferred it if it was done as a usual straight or right angled jack.

With each R02-PRO you get three single flange tips ranging from small to large and an additional medium sized double flange tip.

Compared to the OVC TC20s and Sleek-Audio SA6s the R02-PROs are pretty big. The body is bigger and the cord stress relief also adds some bulk to the design.
